ADULTERATION OF LADLED BUTTER. On or about July 7, 1909, Frank Crawford, New York, N. Y.,? shipped from the State of New York into the State of Massachusetts? a quantity of a food product labeled "Ladled Butter." Examina?? tion of samples of this product, made in the Bureau of Chemistry,? United States Department of Agriculture, showed it to contain an? excessive amount of water. As the findings of the analyst and? report made indicated that the product was adulterated within the? meaning of the Food and Drugs Act of June 30, 1906, the Secre?? tary of Agriculture afforded the said Frank Crawford and the party? from whom the samples were procured opportunities for hearings.? As it appeared after hearings held that the said shipment was made? in violation of the act, the Secretary of Agriculture reported the? facts to the Attorney-General, with a statement of the evidence upon? which to base a prosecution. In due course a criminal information was filed in the Circuit Court? of the United States for the Southern District of New York against? the said Frank Crawford, charging the above shipment and alleging? that the product so shipped was adulterated, in that it contained an? excessive amount of water. On February 2, 1911, the cause came on for hearing and the de?? fendant entered a plea of guilty to the above information, whereupon? the court imposed a fine of $100.
