American Consulate General, 15 Merriog Square, Dublin, Irisi Free State. December 29, 1930. Dr F. J. Halpin, American Consulate, Southampton. Dear Doctor Halpin: I have been tabulating the mental test results 5 fren Southampton and they are of such a nature to make me wonder whether the tests have been given correctly. I know that you do not have time to sit in on eases when tests are given. Accuracy necessarily depends on Miss Seamen and the way she is known to have handled the matter before increases my suspicion that all may not be well. Thig Southampton work is of such importance to my general study that I would like definitely to know whether the reported results can be relied on. If they can it will be extremely interesting and will greatly please me. What I would like is for you without mentioping my doubts to Miss Seamen, for this would spoil it, to @bserve out of the corner of your eye what me is doing with these cases. I want to suggest that as you may have time you sit in on some complete Gases, observg how long it takes her to run through them, how accurately she keeps the time on the various tests, whether she allows the correct time for them etc. and also to observe how long it takes her to do cases that you do not sit in om. Do of course anything else that will help you to come to definite conclusions as to whether her work is reasonable reliable. I would like the manes of cases that you sit in on and keep time on so I Gan compare the ‘weeeeee with each other and with these i have. | How are cases ian selected? This may have something to do with the results. Qnecthing I am wondering is whether Miss Seamen is partially comleting some.of the tests in the absence of the ee supposed te be. examined. I amagoing te Colegne on the Sth and te “Meteors for : about a month on the 12th. Write me at one of. these places if you come to any conclusions. Wishing you and Ere Halpin a happy aga niebagntex New Year. - = aes , : Sincerely yours, Lawrenee Kolb,
