Sirs (Through the Medical Officer in Charge) You are informed that a bill which recently passed Con- gress combined the Life Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service under the title United States Coast Guard. The keepers and surfmen of the former Life Saving Service are now entitled to medical relief and retirement in case of disability incident to the Service. An additional responsibility is thrown upon this Ser- vice hereafter in making physical examinations of these men, as well as strict tests of their color sense. These exam- inations will be made in the various parts of the United States as rapidly as possible. In order that all medical officers of the Service may be ready at any time for orders to make these examinations, it is desired that a certificate be on file in the Bureau as to their vision and color sense and also that all ex- aminations made’ by the medical officers of the Service shall be conducted in a uniform manner. You are therefore directed to proceed to places mentioned below and examine the eyes of officers stationed at these places to determine their vision and color sense.
