PHILADELPHIA AND NEW YORK. We necessarily send our Catalogue to many parties with whom we have not the pleasure of an acquaintance; and persons ordering goods for the first time from us will please accompany their orders with the cash or satisfactory references. No goods per express, C. 0. D., to strangers, on account of the additional expense to us in case of non-acceptance by the purchaser. Estimates made, and special quotations furnished when desired. Most ware on the list can be furnished stoppered on special orders. Also in Flint, Green, Dark Green, Blue, Amber or Opal. In ordering Glassware, customers will kindly state whether they wish Flint or Green; and when the ware is to be stoppered, specify particularly the style of stopper wanted. (See Pages 8 and 9.) (For styles of finish, see Page 10.) TERMS: Payment in funds at par in New York or Philadelphia. ORDERS FOR SUMMER STOCK, No Glass can be made in July and August, owing to the heat. It is therefore essential that our customers, in order to procure a stock of Glassware to meet their wants during the Summer, should, so far as practicable, send in their orders by the 1st of May in each year. -HlcFLINT GLASS WARE.^ NO CHARGE FOR ORIGINAL PACKAGES. A LIBERAL DISCOUNT TO THE TRADE. We desire to call attention to our Flint Glass, which lias been used for many years by most of the leading Wholesale and Retail Druggists throughout the United States, to their entire satisfaction. We invite those who have not used it to give it a trial, and compare the color, style of finish, and amount of breakage with that received from other sources. As we regularly keep on hand the largest stock on this Continent, we are able to fill orders promptly from our houses in either New York or Philadelphia. Where the customer has no special freight contract, it can he left to our discretion to send by the best route. At times, special lines charge very low rates, of which we avail ourselves in our customer’s behalf. As some of the Western and Southern roads have placed Glass in a different class from that adopted by the Trunk lines, we cannot guarantee the rate of freight beyond the terminus of the contracting line. We pack carefully, and ship the goods in merchantable condition, and our responsibility ceases with the signing of the Bills of Lading. Claims for missing packages, overcharges or unusual breakage, should be made to the Transportation Companies. For FLINT GLASS, see pages 16 to TO inclusive. For GREEN GLASS, see pages T1 to 78 inclusive. SAMPLES SENT UPON APPLICATION. WHIT ALL, TATUM & CO. CUT AND ENGRAVED WARE. We have large and constantly increasing facilities for cutting and engraving our Glassware, and are able to furnish from stock or make to order the finest grades of Cut and Engraved Cologne and Toilet Ware, as well as those less costly. We issue each autumn a special Catalogue of these goods, embracing new styles particularly adapted to the Holiday Trade. STOPPERED WARE. We have long made a specialty of Stoppered Ware, which we have great confidence in recommending as very reliable for Essences and volatile fluids, or for packing with liquid contents, as every bottle is carefully tested before it is sent out. Some of the leading druggists are now furnishing Stoppered Bottles to their customers for Prescriptions. Where a bottle stands for days or weeks on a patient’s table, the stopper is a great convenience, as well as an ornament. It is desirable to tie the stopper down, till it reaches the patient. Persons having engraved plates with us can have three dozen or upwards of any size of bottle, stoppered, when we are making their Flint lettered ware of the same size. STOPPERS. We have Stoppers appropriated to Tinctures and Saltmouths, as well as to the different styles of Perfumery and other ware, but we can insert other descriptions of stoppers to meet special orders. When ware is to have any other than the usual stopper, it should be described by number,—703, &c. See Cuts ox opposite page. 701. Mushroom Tincture. All sizes. STYLES OF FINISH. When ware is desired with a different finish from the standard style it should be distinctly indicated as below “ Blow Over ” means ground off without lip. “ Deep Lip ” means a flat patent lip, as put on English Essential Oils. , “Trumpet Mouth” is used in Colognes. “ Champagne Finish ’’means that a narrow ring is below tha mouth. “ Prescription Lip ” means a flaring mouth, with thin edge, suitable for dropping. “ P» L.” means “ Patent Lip,” that is, square, and flat on top. “Extract Lip”—This style is oised in bulk and small ex- tracts. am “ Ring ” means a finish such as is generally used on Castor Oils. “ Double Ring ” means a ring as on Citrate of Magnesia bottles. “Wide Prescription Lip” means extra width of thin lip, as in Ee-agent bottles. “Wine Finish” is like cut herewith. By the general use of scales in our factories, great uniformity of weight, and consequently of content, is secured. When desired we can make Ware of extra weight. As a rule 3 ozs. of solid glass by weight displace about 1 oz. of water. We are constantly adding new styles in the various departments, and call special attention to the extension of our line of moulds for the insertion of lettered plates. (See pages 11—13.) NEW MOULDS. DIRECTIONS FOR ORDERING PRIVATE MOULDS. As we have two large shops for making Bottle Moulds, we are prepared to execute orders on favorable terms. The advantages are great for making moulds at a Glass Factory where experts know the special requirements of a mould that will deliver smooth and regular bottles. When desired, samples can be blown and forwarded before lettering or finishing up the mould, so as to allow of modi- fication of style. In ordering moulds, it is well to select a bottle as near as possible to the kind desired, and to send it with direc- tions for any variations to be made in the new mould. In addition to shape, note also content, finish, whether common or extra weight, and whether lettered or unlettered. As graduates vary greatly, we would ask, where possible, to receive a bottle containing the exact quantity required in the new bottle, measured up to the bottom of the neck. For any unusual shape, a wooden model is desirable. Prices of new moulds vary with the amount of work expended on them. Estimates will be promptly forwarded or application. The Charge is for Engraving Lettering on our Plates, and it will be made on the first Order only. Special pencil designs, with devices, monograms, &c., will be sent for selection or approval without charge. We can make a rectangular, oval or gothic Panel on the lettered side of the Prescription Plate Moulds. The effect of the Panel is to reduce the content to very nearly the name. Thus, we make the 4 ounce French Square Prescription to hold say ounces to the bottom of the neck, but with one side a panel it would hold only 4 ounces. DOUBLE PHILADELPHIA OVALS. KEYSTONE OVALS. These bottles are of the popu- lar Philadelphia Oval Pattern, and are adapted to dispens- ing Metric Prescriptions. The Moulds are so constructed that they allow of the present series of lettered Prescription plates (except Blakes, Tall Blakes, and Drug and Union Ovals,) being worked in them. For instance, a druggist having a 2 ounce plate can, without additional charge, have it used for making 50 cc and 60 cc bottles, or a 4 ounce plate for 125 cc bottles, as ex- plained in the lirst table below. To distinguish them from the old sizes, we have, on the plain bottles, blown the Metric Content in light letters across the top of the flat side (see cut.) The following table of Metric Equivalents may be found useful to the Pharmacist: 1 cc = 16.231 minims 1 cc = 0.270 fluid drachm 1 cc = 0.034 fluid ounce 10 cc = 0.34 ounce 20 cc = 0.68 ounce 30 cc = 1.01 ounce 40 cc =1.35 ounce 50 cc = 1.69 ounce 100 cc = 3.38 ounce 150 cc = 5.07 ounce 200 cc = 6.76 ounce 250 cc = 8.45 ounce 300 cc = 10.14 ounce 350 cc = 11.84 ounce 400 cc = 13.53 ounce 500 cc == 16.91 ounce 1 cubic centimeter or 1 milliliter 1 Gram of Water. WHIT ALL, TATUM & CO. 25 BOTTLES FOE POISONS. These bottles are specially useful in preventing a wrong use of Liniments, and for the various poisonous articles, as Laudanum, Cor- rosive Sublimate, Oxalic Acid, Oil of Vitriol, etc., which are likely to he kept in the family medicine closet. The frequent accidents in the use of POISONS have made a demand from well-appointed apothecary stores for a bottle which shall protect patients from danger of mistake both night and day—by the touch as well as by sight—in the use of poisonous preparations. We have met this demand by a new line of bottles, of a deep cohalt blue color. The surface is also covered with sharp diamond-shaped points, tastefully arranged. It would not be easy to make any mistake with these bottles in use. For Corks. Stoppered. Our New Stoppers for use in bottles containing Poison are made of Blue Glass, and the surface of the stopper is covered with sharp points in such a manner as to make it impossible for the stopper to be removed from the bottle without the fingers coming in contact with the points on stopper. This calls attention to the fact that it is quite different from ordinary stoppers. The value of above stopper in sick room, and particularly during the night, will be seen at once, and we think that their use will greatly diminish, if not entirely prevent, the frequent accidents which now occur from carelessness in the administration of poisonous medicines. The above stoppers are made in two sizes. No. 1 is for use in bottles from 1 ounce to 4 ounce size. No. 2 for use in bottles from 6 ounce to 16 ounce size. They are made with screw thread on shank, so that they can easily be fitted with shell corks to suit any sized bottle; and the retail druggist can carry his stock of Poison Stoppers and cork shells in a small drawer, thereby saving the large amount of room which is required to keep a full line of Poison Bottles. DIRECTIONS.—Place the bottle on a table in a nearly horizontal position in front of you ; the bottle must be perfectly free from moisture. Pour the cement on the hollow side of the label with a spoon; then apply the label to the bottle with a gentle pressure. While the cement is soft run the point of a knife around the label so as to form a groove in the cement. This will save labor in chipping off the cement. The cement will harden in about ten minutes, when, with a putty knife, such as glaziers use, remove the surplus. Clean bottle and label with a little kerosene oil; wipe off with a damp towel. Patented March 25th, 1879 We are prepared to furnish sets of bottles, 1 and 4 ounce Tinctures and 1 and 4 ounce Saltmouths, bearing in raised letters of ground glass, the names of articles mostly used at the Prescription Case. The advan- tages of this series are: I. The labels are blown in the glass and are as indestructible as the Bottle itself. Heat or washing will not affect them. II. The surface of the letter is ground so as to easily impress the eye. III. The lips of the Tincture Bottles are wide, and specially constructed for dropping. IV. The mouths of the Saltmouths are of extra width, almost even with the side of the Bottle, and they are covered from the dust by a Hood Stopper, with top larger than lip of bottle, so as to be easily grasped. V. The stoppering of both Tinctures and Saltmouths is done with especial care, and tested before packing. VI. Amber Bottles are furnished for arti- cles affected by light. VII. Poisons are in Dark Blue Bottles. Content, 4*4 Fluid oz., or % Litre. TINCTURES. SALTMOUTHS. Per Doz. Per Gross. Per Doz. The contents are enclosed entirely in glass, with a thin rubber medium under the lid to make the jar air-tight. This lid is securely fastened down with an outer metallic clamp. On the inner sur- face of the Glass Lid is attached a glass ring, for the convenient securing of speci- mens. The good points of these jars are their simplicity, their wide mouths, glass in- stead of metallic lids, easiness of access to the specimens, and security against the evaporation of the contents. It will be noticed below that we make them of fourteen different dimensions, with four different diameters, having capacities ranging from 4 Pint to five Gallons. SIZES AND P5ICES. Wide. High. This Jar has been in use for about twenty years, with steadily in- creasing satisfaction. During this period many new varieties of jars for preserving fruit have been introduced, but after one or two seasons’ trial many of them have been abandoned as worthless, while the repu- tation of the Millville Jar has constantly increased. The owners confidently refer to the hn t, as to the full satisfaction it has given to their customers. IT IS SOLD WITHOUT LIMIT OF PRICE AS TO RE-SALE. ITo Claim 3a.as ever teerL amua-d-e upon it, oaa. a.ccommt of laa.friaa.g'iaa.g' otluer Patents. The high standard of quality and workmanship heretofore uni- formly maintained in the manufacture of this Jar will be fully sustained in the future. It possesses the following advantages in addition to those of the Ring Jar: T. The pressure on the gum ring is not effected, as in many other jars, by the outer edge of the glass lid, but on the inside. The nicking or chipping off" of the outer edge of the lid, or even of the jar itself, which in many jars destroys the sealing, makes no difference in the Millville Jar. II. The binding of the gum being on the beveled side of the lid, the pressure commences on the inner edge of the ring, and is concentrated there, thus insuring a much tighter sealing than is possible where the strength of the screw is dis- tributed over the surface of the gum horizontally. III. It is a Test Jar. After the fruit is put up and allowed to cool, the clamp can be removed, and by trying the lid, it can be ascertained whether the joint is tight and a vacuum inside. If this is not the case, the fruit can be heated over at once, and thus saved from spoiling, which it would have done in a jar not having this ad- vantage. IV. As nothing but glass comes in contact with the fruit, all danger from corrosion is prevented, and the flavor and quality of the fruit is preserved. V. The Gum Rings being heavier than in most other jars, a perfect joint is more likely to be formed; and the Gum Rings, having a good body, last for many years, instead of having to be renewed almost yearly. VI. The under part of the lid is not concave, and is made to drop into the neck of the jar, so that when the jar is filled to the top of the neck and the lid put on, it displaces the syrup, excluding all the air, and makes, when the contents contract with cooling, as nearly a perfect vacuum as can be formed in this way, which prevents the mould so often seen in other jars on the top of fruit. Prices of Pints, Quarts and Half Gallons furnished upon application Millville No. 3 Fruit Jar. This Jar is sealed on the same prin- ciple as our Millville Atmospheric Fruit Jar; but instead of having a Screw Clamp to hold the lid in place, it is furnished with a Steel Clamp as shown in cut. This is made in two pieces, hinged together, and so shaped that when extended in line upon the Jar the spring of the metal causes a strong pressure upon the lid. The under side of the pivot forms a button which fits into a socket in the middle of the lid. The clamp is applied by placing the two parts at an acute angle, push- ing the button into the socket, and then drawing one end around until the two are in line. GLASS OINTMENT JARS WITH RAISED GLASS LETTERS We make these Jars in Amber and White Opaque glass, with Steeple Top or Flat Top. They are much preferable to Earthenware, as the latter are liable to be penetrated by grease, when they become discolored and rancid. Glass resists grease for an unlimited period. Amber color is selected, as by the general consent of chemists, it resists the decomposing action of light better than blue or other colors. FLAT TOP. Height. Amber. Section 1 is the face of the Pull, which is fastened to the drawer by two screws (one at each end.) Then the label is laid on Section 2, and it is pushed up under Section 1 until the screw-holes at the top of both are opposite, when it is fastened by a screw going through both plates, so that the label can be removed and changed by taking out the top screw, and without removing the face of the Pull from the drawer. This arrangement gives the Pull a solid iron back, so that the glass label is protected, and also gives a much larger space for the hand to take hold of than that found in any other Pull. SECTION 1. A GUARANTEE OF ACCURACY ACCOMPANIES EVERY ENGRAVED GRADUATE. Lines and Numbers conspicuously engraved according to the American, and to the Metric Standards of Graduation. The Phenix Graduates, except the Flasks, are made to deliver actual ounces or cubic centimetres at 60° F., our Graduating Weights being adjusted to this purpose. Thus the actual weight of our weight to measure 1 Liter of Distilled Water at 60° F., is 998.9 Grams, and other weights are similarly adjusted. The American Dispensatory, the American Pharmaceutical Association, and the General Government, have all adopted as the standard of use and of law, 455.6 Troy Grains of Water at 60° F as equal 1 fluid ounce. So many Foreign Graduates, and Graduates made by Foreign Standards, have been in use, that much conflict with the standard of American dispensing has occurred. We have therefore prepared a Series Graduated by Weight, with the utmost care, upon the American Standard. We also offer a Series of equal accuracy Graduated by the Metric system, now coming so largely into use. Our Graduating is done directly from the weighed Avater, and not by afterwards engraving from marks made on the side of the glass. Thus a constant source of error is avoided. Each graduation is re-examined after it is cut, before the weighed water is emptied out. We therefore feel confidence in guaranteeing the accuracy of every Graduate of the Phenix Series.
