This little work has been prepared as the direct result of over twenty-five years' constant practice in the treatment of disease, by the Homeopathic method, or school of prescribing, and which is now so universally known and adopted as to require no special argument to prove its efficacy ; and we place it in the hands of all who desire it, with the most sincere and entire confidence as to its excellence. We have endeavored to make it a plain and easy guide to the administration of the medicines which we carefully prepare and put up in cases for family use, and also, as a handy and useful guide for the proper remedies to be taken for the diseases herein named and specified, which medicines may be obtained of any Homeopathic Physician or Pharmacy. Among the advantages of having such a plain medical guide and formula, with a case of tbe medicines on hand, are the fol- lowing, viz : They may be the means of saving a vast amount of pain and suffering, by a timely application of the proper reme- dy, thereby preventing the permanent seating of more violent and obstinate disease, and that before the urgency of the case would require the services of an attendant physician ; and more advantage still, where such attendance could not be readily or speedily obtained, besides a saving of the necessary and unavoid- able expense resulting from a long protracted course of sickness. The medicines selected are those well known, from long exper- ience in medical practice, to be prompt in their action, safe, relia- ble and effectual, and which can be taken at all times without fear of injury or harm to the most sensitive or delicate constitu- tion. Our method of practice is that of the modern school of rational and liberal physicians, as described in the published volume of the transactions of the State Homeopathic Medical Society of 1870. To save repetition in printing the names of medicines, the number of each remedy only is put down under the diseases specified. The full names of each medicine bowever, is given below opposite each number. No. 1—ACONITE, No. 9—IPECAC, " 2—ARSENICUM, " 10—MERCURIOUS VIV, " 3—BELLADONNA, " 11—NUX VOMICA, " 4—BRYONIA, " 12—PULSATILLA, " 5—CHAMOMILE, " 13—RHUS TOX, " 6—HEPAR SULPHUR, " 14—SEPIA, " 7—HYOSCYAMUS, " 15—STBAMONIUM, " 8—HELLEBORE, or " 16—SULPHUR. VERATRUM, Each vial of the above named remedies will make at least-two quarts of medicinal solution as strong as many physicians ever give them, being powerfully concentrated remedies for family use. We mention this for those who object to the smallness of the doses prescribed. The general affections and diseases for which each of the medi- cines have been proved and tried as curative and effectual specif- ics, are enumerated and described under each of the various medicines above named in their proper place a few pages further on ; also the specific action, and their peculiar adaptation to the several organs of the human system. For instance, we discover by this examination that meisc. viv is an indispensable remedy for affections of the liver, while xux vomica acts more beneficially upon the stomach and bowels, and iiepar sulphur upon the blood and all cutaneous affections ; cuts tox upon the spine, and stramonium upon the lungs, nerves and heart; belladonna, upon the head, &c, &c, &c. In mentioning these, however, we | only give the principal organ they most readily effect, and say nothing of their other curative effects, and only as an illustra- tion, which will also be found true of all, as they are delineated and described. Rules of Diet. RULES OF DIET. The nervous and debilitated patient often asks what they can or should eat and drink. As a general thing, no physician can truly dictate what the patient may eat or may not, as well as the rational and thinking invalid should know from personal experi- ence, what agrees best with the sensitive stomach and digests the easiest, creating the least amount of suffering. In this age of light and knowledge of the subject of Hygene, people have learned, and generally adopt the rule in .sickness to use plain, light and simple.food, avoiding rich cake, pies and pastry, and all highly seasoned food as hurtful and injurious ; and as drinks, all active stimulents, knowing them to be in the main, poisonous and deleterious. Some stomachs find graham bread and oat meal puddings agreeing with them best, while others can eat bread made of the finest bolted flour, with more impunity. All inva- lids should avoid over-loading the weak stomach. This causes more suffering often, than the kind or quality of the food they take. These rules are for children as well as for adults. To keep the body clean and pure, and the mind as cheerful and happy as possible, with the conditions surrounding, are requisites entitled to nearly as much consideration as proper diet. For the nervous and dyspeptic, gentle exercise in the open air, when mild and pleasant, either riding or walking ; and pleasant traveling excursions often result in more benefit to the weak and despon- dent, than medicine, or graham bread. All combined, however, is best and most proper. ADVICE AND RULES FOR TAKING THE MEDICINE PRESCRIBED. First.—We believe the sick are entitled, and have the right to know what medicine is prescribed for them, and the reasons why; and this Manual is specially intended for that purpose. Every person can hereby examine and compare the symptoms delineated under each remedy prescribed, and know whether it is right for their particular case. If there is any truth in medical science, or the best medical works, with which this will be found to be in accordance in most cases, such knowledge puts the mind at rest, and therefore has its salutary effect upon the patient. Secondly.—In order to be effectually benefitted by the reme- dies, they should be regularly and persevcringly taken according to the directions specified. (> Directions for Preparing and Taking the Medicines. DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING AND TAKING THE MEDICINES. PILLS. From one to two pills is a dose for an adult. One pill for children from three years and upwards. Half a pill for infants. Repetition of doses according to disease, and urgency of symp- toms. Always take three doses in succession of one kind before changing to the next, in the order they stand under the disease specified. N. B.—Pills to replenish cases can be sent by mail by specify- ing the numbers wanted. tinctures. A small tea-spoonful of the tinctures in a gill of cold water well mixed. Each kind to be mixed in separate cups or tumblers. Two tea-spoonfuls of the solution thus prepared in water is a dose for an adult. One tea-spoonful, or half as much for children over three years, and some less for infants. Always take three doses in succession out of one kind before changing to the next, in the order they stand under each disease named. Doses to be repeated according to urgency and violence of symptoms, as above stated. Tinctures cannot be sent in the mails. Three remedies constitute a full prescription for each disease named, but only one need be given if found curative. When two or more are put down for the same disease, select the one which covers the greatest number of existing symptoms, or change from one to the other if necessary, after four or five days, or a week in chronic cases, or a shorter time in acute disease. Any remedy may safely and successfully be given, where the symptoms plainly indicate it, whether mentioned under the disease specified or not, and we fully believe there is not a case of chronic disease, however desperate and hopeless it may be considered, but may be benefitted or cured by the timely and judicious ad- ministration of some one or more of the sixteen remedies, (the curative properties of which are herein described) where there is sufficient vitality left in the system to render it possible for medicine to* act upon it.
