The foundation of the Anatomical Collection was laid by the liberality of the Widow of the late Professor Wistar. This Lady, on the death of her husband, recol- lecting the extreme interest which he had always taken, but more particularly in latter years, for the advance- ment of his chair, and for extending in every way the facilities of Anatomical Instruction, felt convinced, that if, in the sickness which destroyed his life, a rational interval had occurred, he certainly would have employ- ed it in making a bequest of his preparations to the University. She therefore determined to manifest, both . her affection to the memory of her lamented husband, and the interest which she felt in the scene of his labours, by purchasing, and presenting to the University, his collection. Which was accordingly done. Doct. Wistar's cabinet consisted principally in dried preparations of the Vascular and Lymphatic system,— Corrosions, and Models. The numerous series of wet preparations has been the result of the subsequent la- bours of the Chair of Anatomy. In the beginning of the present year, the Managers of the Pennsylvania Hospital, with a friendliness and liberality which has met with the highest commenda- tion, gave to the University their Anatomical Collection, consisting in Casts, Wax Models, Paintings, and Mor- bid Preparations. A desire to improve any department in the University 4 has always met with the decided approbation and sup- port -*f the Trustees. They accordingly, immediately on the donation of Mrs. Wistar, caused a room to be erected for containing it. From the growing state of the Museum, this being found in a year or two, too small; they then, with their accustomed liberality, appropriated to the purpose, the large room in the main body of the building, which formerly had been occupied as a lecture room by Professors Rush and Barton. H. m^S>®3B^o Since the Report of October, 1822, the Museum hav- ing been much augmented by the liberality of the Penn- sylvania Hospital, and also by additions on the part of the Anatomical Chair, the arrangement was found not sufficiently convenient, either in the classification of the then existing articles, or in its provision for subsequent additions. For these causes, an entirely new plan has been adopted, derived in some degree from the collection of the late Jno. Hunter, but modifi- ed by the particular views of the undersigned. The present plan divides the whole Museum into three series. The first relates to Models, Paintings, and Artificial Representations. The second relates to Wet Preparations. And the third to Dried Preparations. The first, from its position, not requiring an alphabetical mark has none. The second is indicated by the letter A; and the third by the letter B. It has been an object to keep these several kinds of preparations perfectly distinct from each other, both in their locality and in their classification, yet a blending of them has occasionally been resorted to, as the most simple plan of illustrating particular structures. In the catalogue, the number of the preparation, and its series, are placed in the first column, the name of the 6 preparation in the second, and the donor's or owner's name in the third. The latter is represented by initials, thus: W. stands for Wistar P. " for Physick P. H. " for Pennsylvania Hospital J. " for James H. " for Horner. There are a few other contributors, whose names are for the most part written in full. { This mark relates to preparations which have been sawed into two or more pieces. Sometimes the same number is put upon the several pieces, sometimes con- secutive numbers. . A great difficulty with almost every anatomist having a cabinet of any magnitude, is the numbering of his preparations in such a way, that he may introduce fresh articles, so as to harmonize both in their positions and numbers with their congeners. It has been a subject of much reflection to Dr. Horner, as well as of inquiry into the arrangements of collections abroad, and as yet he has met with no plan suiting his own views of conve- nience and simplicity. It is not necessary for him to point out the conceived defects in such instances, he only makes the remark, with the view of explaining a peculiarity in the present one. For example, in the first series, many preparations intervene between the Nos. 12 and 13, and they are introduced without con- fusion by adopting fractional signs, as 12-1, 12-2, 12-3 12-4, 12-5, &c. From which it is evident that a thou- sand preparations, may subsequently come in between 12 and 13, without ever disturbing the present catalogue. 7 It also will add inconsiderably to the complexity of the plan, to subjoin a fraction to a fraction as 12-1-1,12-1-2, 12-1-3, 12-1-4, 12-1-5, 12-1-20, 12-1-100, &c. So that a preparation, let it be added at the most distant inter- val of time, need never be separated from its congener, either in number or position. From the want of some such simple plan, it is very common in growing collec- tions, to be under the necessity of forming new ca- talogues every few years, which has been the task of the undersigned, now for the third or fourth time. The Museum has reached a state in which a print- ed catalogue would be attended with advantage in several respects. The Adj. Prof, of Anatomy, there- fore, respectfully suggests to the committee, and to the hon. the Board of Trustees, this measure for their adop- tion. All which is respectfully submitted by W. K.
