S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE Public Health Service 1957 Public Health Service Publication No. 514 U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington : 1957 For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office Washington 25, D. C. - Price 15 cents PREFACE All countries contribute to the advance of the sciences; the scientific record which is thus cooperatively compiled is a polyglot one. Formerly the basic languages for scientific communication were English, French, and German; now Russian, Spanish, Italian, and a number of .others must be added. Formerly our educational system, capped by a European postgraduate residency, created a high level of language proficiency among scientists; now the formal study of language tends to be crowded aside by other curriculum demands. These circumstances have created linguistic barriers which have tended to circumscribe the scientist's acquaintance with the litera- ture of his field, and even to parochialize his outlook. This impedi- ment to scientific progress has been recognized throughout the world. UNESCO has been engaged in a major study of the problems of scientific translation. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in London and the Indian National Scientific Documentation Center in New Delhi both operate translating centers. The National Science Foundation, Washington, D. C, and the Ail-Union Institute of Scientific and Technical Information, Moscow, are concerned with two aspects of the same problem: reciprocal translation of Russian and English. Professional scientific and technical translators have recognized the magnitude of the problem, and commercial translation services have reoriented themselves from legal and commercial work to science and technology. The present guide represents a preliminary attempt to provide a directory of sources for locating and procuring translations, including cooperative translation programs, governmental agencies which col- lect or prepare translations, and a list of those commercial translation services in the United States, known to the compilers. Omission of any firm from this preliminary list does not imply exclusion for any reason, and suggestions for additions will be welcomed. This guide is not complete, but it is offered as a stopgap measure to meet the critical need for information in this field. Should demand and additions warrant, a later revision may be issued, incorporating further types of information. The list was prepared by Miss Sheila Parker, Reference Division, National Library of Medicine, Washington, D. C, and Miss Rose- mary Roberts, Translating Unit, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. Mr. Scott Adams, Librarian, National Insti- tutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and Mr. Ralph O'Dette, Division of Scientific Information, National Science Foundation, Washington, D. C, have made suggestions and have assisted in its editing. Frank B. Rogers, M. D., Director, National Library oj Medicine. Washington, D. C, November 1, 1966.
