NEW YORK. METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART. Bibliography of Museums and. Museology. |New York, 1923* 98 pages. THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MUSEUMS AND MUSEOLOGY N EW YQ.&K M C M X X I I I B I BLIOGRAPH Y OF MUSEUMS AND MUSEOLOGY THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MUSEUMS AND MUSEOLOGY COMPILED BY WILLIAM CLIFFORD LIBRARIAN NEW YORK M C M X X I I I PREFACE As the number and variety of museums increase, there is an increased desire, on the part of those who direct or manage de- partments in them, to become familiar with what has been published about such institutions and their management. Realizing how useful a bibliography of museums and museology might be to those interested in museums, the Metropolitan Museum concluded to have one prepared. The compilation and arrangement were done in the Library of the Museum under the direction of Helen J. Baker, head of the Cataloguing De- partment. So far as known there is nothing that gives this in- formation in the form in which it is here presented. The compilation does not include any material contained in annual reports or catalogues of collections and exhibitions held in museums, except in some few cases where real contribu- tions have been made therein to the subjects included in this bibliography. Its several divisions are as follows: General Works; Organization, Administration, and Arrangement; Scope and Functions of Museums; Museum Construction; Special Mu- seums; Periodicals. No attempt has been made at a close classi- fication of the material contained herein. On account of the inability to examine all of the articles quoted, those of a similar nature may occasionally be found under different headings. Entries are indexed under author and title, within the division which seems to include the subject matter of book or article listed. In most cases the articles appearing in the Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and also in the Bulletins of other museums have reference only to the institution issuing them. V VI PREFACE It should be understood that the present compilation is con- sidered as tentative and not complete. No doubt omissions will be discovered, and when such is the case, it is hoped that the information will be communicated to the Librarian of the Museum, who will be pleased to receive suggestions and titles to be inserted in a supplement which will be kept for use whenever an enlarged edition of the present compilation may seem neces- sary. It is hoped that the information here presented will be held to justify the preparation and publication of this bibliography, and that it will prove of service to those for whom it is intended.
