CATALOGUE OF THE LIBRARY OF THE raster Sistrat Metrical Serrato; WITH A LIST OF THE PRESENT MEMBERS. WORCESTER: PRINTED BY CHAS. HAMILTON, CENTRAL EXCHANGE. 1 860. HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY. The Library of the Worcester District Medical Society was founded in 1798, by the gift of " Fifty Pounds value in Books" to the Worcester Medical Society, by Doc- tor Elijah Dix, of Worcester; and the books became the property of the newly-formed District Society, upon the dis- solution of the former in 1804. Additions were made from time to time, for many subsequent years;-by purchase;-by contributions from the Massachusetts Medical Society, including not only its own publications, but many Medical works of great value ;-and by donations of books from Drs. William Paine, John Green, Benjamin F. Heywood, and Hon. Daniel Waldo, of Worcester. But by far the largest source of increase has been from purchase, within the last eight years, by appropriation of the income derived from the very munificent bequests of Hon. Daniel Waldo, and Doctor Charles Wellington Wilder, of Leomin- ter. Mr. Waldo bequeathed to the Society the sum of Six Thousand Dollars; the principal of which is to be kept safely invested, and the income perpetually appropriated to the purchase and care of books for a Medical Library. The Library is to be always kept in the City of Worcester, and to be the property of the Worcester District Medical Society, but open at all times to the profession at large of Worcester IV HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY. County. Dr. Wilder bequeathed the sum of Five Hundred Dollars, to be used by the Society " for the encouragement of Medical Science, in such manner as its members may direct." The total amount of the Fund arising from these bequests, was on May 1st, 1859, $8043.74; all of which is securely invested, and is at present yielding an income of more than six per cent, per annum. To the same period the total amount which had been expended for the purchase of books, and on account of the library was $3351.61. The collection has been the means of great good to the profession and the society, and is a just source of pride and satisfaction. Every member has interested himself in its welfare and improvement, and the suggestions of all are respected, and as far as possible followed, in making pur- chases and additions. CLASSIFICATION AND ARRANGEMENT. The following Catalogue is the result of the labors of a Committee of the Society appointed at the annual meeting in May, 1858, to make a new catalogue of all the books belonging to the library of said society. To make a catalogue which should transform our library from its former state of utter confusion into an orderly, philosophical and convenient arrangement, which should at once indicate the character and contents of every book, and point the inquirer directly to its place on the shelf, was found to be a much more arduous labor than was at first anticipated. The present size of the library, which has been greatly enlarged since the former catalogues were printed, seemed to render necessary for convenience of reference some method of arrangement other and better than the alphabetical sequence of the names of authors. With a view to this end, therefore, the books of the library have been arranged in eleven distinct Classes, which were thought to be sufficiently definite for convenience, and sufficiently comprehensive to embrace all the works contained in it. Hence the catalogue now pre- sented to the Society is entirely a new work, compiled from VIII CLASSIFICATION AND ARRANGEMENT. the books (from every book), without reference to, or aid from, the old catalogues. The classification adopted is as follows, viz : 1st. ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, 2d. MATERIA MEDICA AND PHARMACY, 3d. PATHOLOGY, 4th. SURGERY, 5th. MIDWIFERY, 6th. MEDICAL JURISPRUDENCE, 7th. CHEMISTRY AND NATURAL PHILOSOPHY, 8th. NATURAL HISTORY, 9th. PERIODICALS, 10th. GENERAL LITERATURE, 11th. MISCELLANEOUS. It was found, however, in the progress of the work, to be a much easier matter to project a principle of classification than to apply it practically in all cases. In the majority of cases the work is easy, but there are many instances where a book may with nearly equal propriety be placed in two or more different classes, while for some others it was quite difficult to find a suitable place without multiplying classes beyond our prescribed number. But sound judgment and good taste alone can decide correctly in these cases, and doubtless there will be different opinions in regard to the proper collocation of some of the books above referred to. Again, there are books treating in some degree upon medical or surgical subjects, yet in such a general and popular manner as to preclude them a place under either of IX these specialties. Such books it was deemed proper to classify with a considerable variety of others, under the head of General Literature. It is not claimed, however, that a better arrangement can not be made. CLASSIFICATION AND ARRANGEMENT. The present arrangement of the Library was begun first by numbering the shelves ; secondly, by arranging the books according to size and appearance rather than by any other principle, and numbering them on the shelves. The numbers prefixed to the title of each book on the left margin of the page show its place in the whole number of the catalogue. The books are also all numbered by the shelf; and the numbers at the end of the title on the right margin, show first the place of each book on its appropriate shelf, and secondly the shelf on which each book may be found; so that with a catalogue, or simply the number of book and shelf before him, any one may place his hand directly on the book he may desire to find.
