These instructions are published for the information and guidance of all personnel charged with the operation and maintenance of Sterilizer, small, 110-volt, a-c-d-c, Medical Department Item No. 7917005, in the field. They contain information on the operation and maintenance of the equip- ment with illustrations showing the various parts referred to in the instruc- tions. This Technical Manual is arranged in four parts: Chapter 1—Introduc- tion; Chapter 2—Operating Instructions; Chapter 3—Maintenance and the Appendix which lists all service parts by manufacturers. Inasmuch as prac- tically all small officer sterilizers of the nonpressure type are similar in design, construction and operation, these instructions are written to apply generally to all such sterilizers. 2. DESCRIPTION. The Sterilizer, instrument, small, 110-volt, a-c-d-c is a small, compact unit designed for sterilization of small surgical instruments. Boiling water is the sterilizing medium. The units employ electrically oper- ated heater elements to heat water contained in a boiler. Caution must be used when ordering replacement parts for these units since they vary in serial number, as well as model number in some cases. The serial numbers and model numbers are usually found on the nameplates attached to the unit. Be certain when ordering spare parts that the part ordered is specifically for the model or serial number as shown in the list of all service parts in the Appendix, If the part is not listed as a spare part, it must be requisitioned for special purchase. 3. DATA. a. Performance. The sterilizer is designed to operate on 110- 120-volts, 60-cycle a-c, or d-c. b. Manufacturers. American Sterilizer Co., New York, N. Y. GENERAL. The hours of operation of the sterilizer are dependent upon the requirements of the Medical Officer. It is general practice to operate the sterilizer the entire time the Medical Officer is on duty and using instruments, since the various instruments used should be sterilized immediately after use. However, since the operation of the sterilizer is simple, it may be put into use at any time. 5. SERVICE UPON RECEIPT OF EQUIPMENT, a. Unpacking. To unpack the sterilizer, open the shipping box carefully. Remove packing materials, and lift the apparatus from the shipping box. b. Assembling. The item is shipped completely assembled and ready for use after inserting the line cord plug into a power receptacle. In some cases the lever handle must be screwed onto the lifting lever. 6 CONTROLS, a. Switch. Many models and makes have a 3-pole switch which enables the operator to select the required or desired amount of heat. The switch settings are “Off,” “Low,” “Medium” and “High.” When the switch is turned to “Off,” the unit receives no current. The “High,” “Medium” and “Low” settings are self-explanatory as pertaining to the amount of heat obtained from the heating elements. Some models use a mercury switch rather than 3-pole switch. The same principle as used in the 3-pole switch is used, however. One setting uses two mercury switches and two heaters, a second setting one switch and one heater, and a third setting is the “Off” position, b. Low water cut-off. The low water cut-off is a protective device. Some sterilizers use a mechanical low water cut-off, some use a bimetallic thermostat. The general purpose is the same. (1) Mechanical low water cut-off. Generally incorporates a nonexpanding rod anchored to the boiler. When water in the sterilizer has reached a very low depth or boiled away, the boiler is heated to a higher temperature than when it contains water. The boiler expands causing the nonexpanding rod to trip a switch which breaks the electric circuit. This stops the heating of the boiler and indicates the low water condition to the operator who fills the boiler with water, manually resets the low water cut-off, and the sterilizer is again ready for use. By breaking the electric circuit the current is cut off, the boiler is not over-heated, and damage to the unit is prevented. (2) Thermostatic low water cut-off. Operates in a similar manner. Exces- sive heat from the boiler causes the diaphragm disk on the bimetallic thermo- stat to snap open and thus break the electrical circuit. The unit then cools off. 5 However, upon cooling off, the bimetallic disk snaps shut, completes the elec- trical circuit, and heat is again applied to the boiler. Therefore, it is necessary to fill the boiler with water or turn the machine off until the boiler is filled, otherwise the current will alternately be on and off until this is done. Should the operator fail to note that the thermostat is opening and closing the circuit, no damage will be done to the sterilizer; however, the unit should be turned off or the boiler filled if continued in use. 7. OPERATION. The sterilizer boiler should be clean. If necessary, scrub boiler interior, needle and instrument trays with a stiff brush and soap and rinse well before using. Fill the boiler with fresh water. Insert plug into power receptacle. Turn switch to “High.” Bring water to a boil. Place instruments and needles in the trays and carefully lower trays into water. Be sure entire load to be sterilized is completely submerged; never allow any part to be exposed above water. During sterilizing period it is not necessary that the water boil vigorously. However, the water must be kept at a rolling boil. When water reaches the vigorous boiling point with the switch on “High,” turn the switch to “Low” or “Medium,” whichever setting will keep water at a boil. At end of prescribed boiling period, remove instruments immediately. (Never add fresh water to sterilizer during sterilizing period as this will reduce the water to below sterilizing temperature.) Turn switch to “Off.” If steriliz- ing is to be repeated, add fresh water, if needed, bring to boil and repeat above operation. 6 Figure 4. Preventive maintenance includes the systematic attention to water level and general cleanliness, the inspection of electrical leads and controls to determine that they are in good condition and the prevention of abuse to the equipment. 9. OPERATOR'S PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE, a. Before Operating. (1) Be certain that boiler is clean, clean if necessary. (2) Determine that water is at desired level. (3) Examine drain cocks and boiler for leaks. (4) Inspect electrical wiring for good condition and avoid excessive twist- ing of the cord. Do not allow sterilizer legs or any other heavy sharp cornered objects to rest on the cord. (5) Make certain the plug prongs fit tightly into the power receptacle. b. During Operation. (1) Inspect for changes in water level. (2) Watch for abnormal variations in temperature. c. After Operation. (1) Keep the unit clean and free of dust. (2) Make sure all switches are “Off.” (3) Inspect boiler for accumulation of scale or lime deposits. Clean if necessary. (4) Rinse and wipe boiler dry at end of each day. 10. TRQUBLE SHOOTING, a. If unit fails to heat when switch is turned on. Possible causes Cord plug not plugged in. Low water cut-off not reset. Loose wiring connections. Broken cord. Burned out element. Possible remedies Be certain cord plug is inserted properly into power source receptacle. Manually reset the low water cut-off. Connect wires to proper terminals or plug. Repair cord. Refer to higher echelon for replacement or repair. Replace element. Refer to higher echelon for repair or replacement. b. If low water cut-off "kicks out" during use. Possible cause Water is low or no water. Possible remedy Add water. 8 FigUre 5' SteriUzer. instrument, small 110-volt, a-c-d-c, item No. 7917005. manufactured by the Pelton and Crane Companv. with false bottom removed. 8. 7R00048 Spring, Rod, Low Water Cut-Off. 9. 7R00004 Trip, Cut-Off. 10. 7R00012 Blade, Contact, Low Water Cut-Off. 11. 7R00014 Drum, Contact, Low Water Cut-Off. 12. 7R00016 Block, Contact, Porcelain, Low Water Cut-Off. 13. 7R00050 Wire, Heater, Asbestos Covered. 1. 7R00052 Knob, Valve Plug. 2. 7R00056 Body, Drain-Off Valve. 3. MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS, a. Low water cut-off. If the unit has a low water cut-off which requires manual resetting, make certain the cut-off has been reset before operating. If the low water cut-off, “kicks out” during use, it is an indication that the water is low and more should be added. If the unit has a thermostat this will not be experienced, but the unit will go on and off alternately and if this occurs water must be added. b. Wiring. Unscrew the eight screws (or four legs) from the false bottom and remove it. Examine the wiring to see that the wires are all connected to the post studs. If it appears that a wire is loose, connect it to the proper terminal using the proper wiring diagram as a guide. If trained repair person- nel are available, call in a trained man to make the repair. Often wires of the cord come loose from the plug. A visual inspection will show this. Unscrew screw from plug. Replace wire by wrapping it around screw in the direction in which the screw will be turned. Leave no loose ends. Replace screw. Insert plug into receptacle and observe if trouble has been corrected. c. Broken cord and burned out element. When it is apparent that either or both of these conditions exist, the repair should be accomplished by a higher echelon. d. Removal of scale or lime deposits. From time to time as warranted by a visual inspection, scrub the inside of the boiler and the trays with a stiff brush and soap. e. Should scale form in the boiler through inattention, prepare a 10 percent hydrochloric acid solution in sufficient quantity to fill the boiler to the top of the scale. Boil the solution for 15 minutes. This will loosen scale so it can be scrubbed out with a stiff brush. Then drain solution, rinse boiler thoroughly and wipe dry. Be sure to wipe off under side of cover thoroughly, and do not spill solution on exterior of sterilizer or on cabinet top. If trays are also coated with scale, leave in sterilizer while boiling solution and rinse and dry same as boiler. a THERMOSTAT Figure 7.
