FOREWORD In 1931 the State Hospital Commission inaugurated the plan of collecting and compiling detailed infor- mation relating to each patient in the various state hospitals. Since this activity began statistical reports covering the period 1931-1934 and 1935-1938 have been presented. The accompanying tables are the first of a series to be presented for the period 1939-1942. Since cer- tain data for the calendar year 1938 were not pre- sented in detail in the report covering that period, these data have been included in this tabulation for the purpose of comparison. The work of compiling the tabulations included in this report has been directed by Maurice 0. Riker, statistician for the State Hos- pital Commission. Additional data on mentally ill patients and men- tally defective and epileptic patients are to loe pre- sented in a later series of tables which will then be consolidated in a single publication. INTRODUCTION SCOPE OF THE DATA.- The data included in this report are de- voted to the various hospitals for mentally ill patients, six of which are operated under the State Hospital Commission and one of which is operated by Wayne County. Of these seven hospitals, six are operated for the care and treatment of civil patients and one is of the penal type, caring for and treating only criminal mental patients. This report is com- piled from information submitted by these various hospitals and is confined to certain details of first admissions and readmissions during the period January 1, 1938 through De- cember 31, 1942. FIRST ADMISSIONS.- First admissions include all patients admitted for the first time to a public institution for mentally ill patients in this state, not having had previous care in an institution of the same type, public or private, whether located in this state or elsewhere. Previous care of a temporary nature is not considered in determining type of admission. READMISSIONS.- Readmissions include all patients who have previously received treatment, other than temporary care, in a hospital for mentally ill patients, public or private, within this state or elsewhere, and who are again admitted upon a new adjudication and a new order of admission. In ad- dition all patients who are returned after an absence of over one year on parole or escape are enumerated as readmissions. The statutes of the State of Michigan provide that; ’’the medical superintendent shall discharge any patient who has been on parole 'for three years continuously,” and that; ”every escaped patient shall be subject at any time to be taken back within the enclosure of the hospital from which he has escaped". Since in most states a patient returned to an institution after an absence of one year is classified as a readmission, the inclusion of such returned patients as readmissions in the following compilation is necessary for comparative purposes.
