These data include the average number of cases and deaths reported for two five-year periods from 1936 to inclusive, and for individual years from to inclusive. The death figures are provisional. For most diseases, the decline in deaths has been greater than the decline in cases. This is probably due to the more effective treatment with new drugs during recent years. There were also more cases of tuberculosis reported during the later period, but fewer deaths.
