This may be avoided by placing as much common salt, finely powdered, as well reach from the tallow to the bottom of the black part of the wick of a partly burnt candle, which, if the same be lit, will burn very slowly, yielding sufficient light for a bedchamber; the salt will gradually sink as the tallow is consumed, the melted tallow being drawn through the salt and consumed in the wick. 50 [Economist. 2 CURE FOR CROUP. - We have been requested by a gentleman who has tested in his own family, with the happiness results, the efficacy of the following remedy for that dangerous and painful disorder of children, the croup, to lay it before our readers for the benefit of the public; he is not aware that it has ever been made generally known, but if so, it may still reach thousands who are unacquainted with it: Procure some strong ley from oak ashes, and sweeten it with molasses; give the child one, two or three spoonsful, as it may seem to be relieved - generally, the relief is almost immediate - and the child will fall off into a quiet sleep. Renew the dose until the complaint disappears. The above remedy has been submitted to a competent physician, who, in the absence of any experience on the subject, expressed an opinion that the mixture would certainly do no harm, and might be tried in all cases with perfect safety. As croup is a complaint which often requires instant remedial attention, the above may prove invaluable. Take two ounces of fine white gum arabic powder, put it in a pitcher, and pout on a pint or more of boiling water, according to the degree of strength you desire, and then having covered it, let it set all night; in the morning pour it carefully from the dregs into a clean bottle, cork it, and keep it for use. A tablespoonful of gum water stirred into a pint of starch, made in the usual manner, will give lawns, either white or printed, a look of newness, when nothing else can restore them after washing. PRESSCRIPTION FOR YELLOW FEVER. WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 25, 1854. Messrs. GALES & SEATON: The wide-spread circulation of your valuable journal induces me to give you the following receipt for the cure of the yellow fever, which I have used and seen used in the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba, and last summer in New Orleans with great success: Dissolve a tablespoonfull of table salt in half a wine glass of water; squeeze the juice of a lemon into it; mix with these from two to four ounces of castor oil; and take the mixture at one dose. Give the patient hot strong mustard baths, with a handfull of salt in them; put large mustard plasters on the abdomen calfs of the legs, and soles of the feet; give him barley water to drink; and there need be no fear of any kind. When the fever has been broken take forty grains of sulphate of quinine and put it into a quart bottle of water, with fifty drops of the elixir of vitriol - dose: three small wine glasses per day. With the room well ventilated this treatment will save ninety-nine cases out of a hundred. Respectfully, yours, JONAS P. In the morning pour it carefully from the dregs into a clean bottle, cork it, and keep it for use. A table spoonful of gum water, stirred into a pint of starch that has been made in the usual manner, will give the lawns - either white, black, or printed - a look of. newness when nothing else can restore them after washing It is also good, much diluted, for thin white muslin and bobbinet. MESSRS. EDITORS: Annexed I send you a most admirable recipe for making twelve bottles of the above catsup, which I received from a New York lady some years since. I also send you a bottle put up by me in 1847, to enable you to testify as to its keeping qualities. Y. Take half a bushel of ripe tomatoes, slice them, and place them in layers in a wooden or earthen vessel, salting each layer well, using for the whole two quarts of table salt; let them stand twenty-four hours; then stew them over a slow fire six hours; after that force them through a wire sieve sufficiently fine to exclude the seeds. Then add the following: Spices, whole, two ounces of black pepper, two ounces of alspice, two ounces of cloves, and simmer the contents over a slow fire for four hours. When cold, bottle, adding a tablespoonful of best salad oil to each bottle to exclude the air and prevent mould; cork tightly, and seal the bottles; keep them in summer in a cool place, and always in an upright position. [We can, from experience, vouch for the excellence of the article made by the above recipe. - EDITORS.] #50 A System of Practical Surgery [At the Nedow Boaga -] by - John Lizars Surgery Illustrated - compiled [illegible] from the works of Culler - Hind [Cancer of Chamberlains alley] Velpeau & Blasues - [And Eutain Strait] Cyclopedia of Practical Surgery Edited by - Wm B. A distinguished chemist recommends the following compound as a safe and excellent dentrifrice, viz. of white sugar and powdered charcoal, each one ounce, of Peruvian bark half an ounce, of cream of tartar one drachm and a half, and of canella twenty-four grains, well rubbed together into an impalpable powder. He describes it as strengthening to the gums, and cleansing to the teeth, and as destroying the disagreeable odor in the breath, which so often arises from decaying teeth. As a preventive of toothache, we have heard washing the mouth and teeth twice a day with salt and water strongly recommended by gentlemen who have experienced much benefit from it. TO CURE A FELON. - Take one tablespoonful of red lead, and one tablespoonful of Castile soap, mix them with as much weak ley as will make it soft enough to spread like a salve, and apply it on the first appearance of the felon, and it will cure it in ten or twelve hours. IMPORTANT MEDICAL DISCOVERY. - A late number of the London Lancet contains an interesting report of a case in the Middlesex Hospital, the result of which was important to the medical profession. A man was admitted into that hospital about six hours after having taken an ounce of laudanum (containing 26 grains of opium.) At the time of admission he was apparently lifeless, the surface of the body was cold, countenance pale and livid, lips purple, pupils contracted to a mere point, respiration scarcely perceptible, pulse hardly to be felt. The laudanum was removed by a stomach-pump, but in spite of every exertion, the pulse became more unfrequent, and was at times imperceptible, when recourse was had to electro-magnetism, which was applied by means of a small battery, with coil and contact-breaker. One wire was applied to the neck, and the other to the region of the heart or epigrastrium, and by these a succession of very powerful shocks were given. The good effects were very apparent. - The muscles of respirator: were set in action, and the diaphragm contracted powerfully; the chest was more fully expanded, respiration was more perfectly carried on, and a corresponding improvement was observable in the countenance. The pulse improved and became more powerful, becoming steady when the current was interrupted for a few minutes. This application was continued for several hours; and was finally successful - thus clearly establishing the influence of electro-magnetism under circumstances hitherto considered hopeless. - New York Courier. ꝶ Vini Ipecacnanhæ R. CHOLERA CONFUSION - There is so great a variety of prescriptions, recipes, &c, preventitive and curative, in circulation, that danger may arise from the multitude of counsel, with those who do not act rationally and judiciously. We have before us, at this moment, two directly adverse opinions in relation to the bath. One was contained in the theory of Dr. Chalomer, of Philadephia, published in the Sun of yesterday morning. He says -- "the use of the warm or hot bath is prejudicial; both from its relaxing effect and the movement of the patient requisite for its accomplishment." Dr. Kilbourn, of New York, in a communication to the Tribune, says: "One of the most power aids we possess is the warm or hot bath I have known many who, at the time of their admission, had violent spasms and were in a state of collapse, put into a bath of 110 degrees, and suffered to remain there until a sense of lassitude was induced; then being removed to a warm bed, and surrounded with bottles of hot water, with mustard applications to the pit of the stomach and extremities, together with ice to quench thirst, in the course of two hours entirely out of danger." Here are opinion directly at war - who shall decide? Dr. Chalomer says, and we believe him, that "the symptoms of the disease vary with the locality of the place, and the medical attendant will often find himself compelled, in the same place, to adopt an opposite course of treatment, and be astonished to find recoveries under these apparent contradictions." The disease varied in its character most strikingly upon the occasion of its former visitation to our city. In 1832 nearly every patient that was bled was lost Bleeding has been declared the very sheet anchor of the Faculty in some European cities, and had been relied upon greatly in the practice of several physicians upon this continent; but it was death in Baltimore. Upon the return of the disease, in 1833, the lancet was resorted to, under added recommendations from the south-west, and with signal success. Bleeding is now, we believe, generally avoided, and we doubt not, with happier results, under a better acquaintence with the disease. Dr. Drake, a physician of Cincinnati, who is highly spoken of as a practitioner, having an extensive acquiantance with the disease, remarks that "epidemic cholera has no premonitory symptoms. The diarrhea, which is supposed ot be its forerunner, is the disease itself, in its first stage; as positively so as when it has advance to vomiting, or coldness and collapse." This accords with an opinion the Sun expressed some six months ago in a general article on the subject. The diarrhea is the sickening with the disease, and proves to be entirely manageable, unless the exciting cause is very great, or the patient previously debilitated by sickness. We published in the article referred to above, the prescription of Dr. Dwight in his extensive and successful practice in Turkey. When called to a case of diarrhea, he never failed to arrest it in mild cases by administerng six drops of laudanum, at intervals sufficient to test the efficacy of the dose. Where the diarrhea was more advanced, he used equal parts of laudanum, tincture of rhubarb, and tincture of camphor, mixed together, administering eighteen drops at sufficient intervals, till the disease was arrested. - We republish this as a cheap and popular remedy; one that ought to be in every house, and which, in ordinary cases, we have no doubt, may be safely relied upon in the first stage of the disease From the Savannah Georgian. DATES OF UNITED STATES SETTLE- MENTS. - As we have sometimes been asked about the first settlement of Savannah, and other places, we now offer for the satisfaction of our readers a list, showing when the colonies were first planted in this country by European Powers, that have, since the year 1776, by voluntary compact for mutual defence and preservation, been universally distinguished as the United States of America. The settlement of Florida by the Spaniards is also given, which shows that St. Augustine is the oldest town now existing in our Republic. What a subject of meditation for the moralist - what a theme for the American patriot, to inspire his children's minds with sentiments of admiration and gratitude for their sage and heroic ancestors. Not quite three little centuries have passed since the chivalrous Hidalgo planted the gorgeous ensign of old Spain among the sublime magnolias of the Floridian wilderness. Since then, successively, the enterprising Briton, hardly Hollander, and adventurous Dane; the prudent Swede, the Finlander, and gallant Gaul, have each awhile possessed a portion of our soil. But now, let grateful mankind thank auspicious Heaven, what once were tributary colonies of foreign rulers, are happily united, we hope for ages, by the holiest feelings of our nature, as an independent and commercial nation, great and rapidly advancing to pre eminence in literature, scientific agriculture, commerce and the useful arts, an aspiring and intelligent people, whose vigorous spirit of untiring industry has borne them fearlessly to every clime, where civilized or savage man can live a gallant and unconquered nation, whose lustrous banner, while it nobly waves defiance to him who would dare to shackle their tree energies, ever generously offers its protecting folds to shield the helpless from a despotic power, and diffuse the blessings of enlightened freedom through the world.
