Sir Walter Rawleigh’s Receipt against the Plague. Written in his own hand, The Original is in the Duke of Chandris’s Family. Take three Pints of Malmsy, Canary or Sack, boil it in one handful of Sage, and as much [Rue], till one Pint be wasted away, then strain it, and set it over the fire again, and put thereto one Drachm of long Pepper, half an ounce of Ginger, and Quarter of an Ounce of Nutmegs, all well beat together, let it boil a little, then put to it one Drachm of Venice Treacle, and a quarter of a Pint of Aquavito or host Angelica Water, and a half Pint of Mithridate. Keep this as your Life, above all worldly treasure, and take three Spoonfuls Morning and evening, if the party be diseased, if not, every morning is sufficient. In all the Plague time, trust to this for security, God be praised for it, There was neither Man, Woman or Child whom this Drink deceived, if the Heart was not Poisoned or drowned with the Disease before. 2 An Infusion against Infection Take a [Rue], Sage, Mint, Rosemary, wormwood and Lavender, a handful of each, infuse them together in a Gallon of the best White Wine Vinegar, put the whole into a Stone Jar, closely covered up, and pasted over the Cover, set the jar thus closed up upon warm wood ashes, for eight Days, After which draw off, or strain thro’ fine Flannel the Liquid, and put it into Bottles well corked, and into every quart Bottle, put an Ounce of Camphor. With this preparation wash your Mouth and rub your Loins and Temples, every Day, Snuff a little up your Nostrils, when you go into the Air, and carry about with you a bit of Spunge dipped in the same, in order to smell to, upon all Occasions, especially when you are near any place or Person, that is supposed to be infected. They write that four Malefactors, who had robbed infected and murdered the People during the course of the Plague, owned when the came to the Gallows, that they had preserved themselves, from the Contagion by using the Above 3 above Medicine only. and that they went from House to house, without any fear of the Distemper. from Mr Willis An excellent Recipe for a Sore Throat or Sore Mouth. Take a large handfull of the Herb Fluellin or Speedwell, wash it pound it & Squeese the Juice, which put into a Sauce pan over a few Coals, till it turn like Curds & Whey, then strain off the Clear, take a new laid Egg, make a little hole in the largest end of it, and pour out all the Inside, put your Fluellin into the Eggshell, with a little more of the best Honey than Juice, a little bit of Allum, two or three leaves of Sage and pennyroyal cut small, set the Egg-Shell on hot ashes and let it boil till it is pretty thick, Then strain it thro’ a Rag and keep it for use. The Throat is to be anointed with a Feather, very often, or a little [mop] made of Rag, you may gargle with this, mixed with Syrup of Mulberries 4 Plaister for a Sore Throat. Take four Ounces of Mutton fat from off the Kidneys, put it into a glazed earthen Pipken, melt it over the Fire, then take it off and strain it, put it again into the Pipkin and add to it three Ounces of fresh Butter, when that is melted add three ounces of Rosin, when that is melted put in an Ounce and half of Bees-wax, It must be constantly stirred the whole time it is on the fire, when it is all Melted and well mixed, put it into a Gallipot for use, when wanted it must be spread on a Black Silk or a Linen Cloth, and put a Flannel over it, In violent cases it may be changed every twelve Hours, but in general once in twenty four Hours is sufficient. And as the Throat grows better, need not be repeated so often. But the Flannel should be worn for some Days after the Plaister is taken off lest any cold should occasion a relapse. Ditto 5 Recipe for a Sore Throat. Boil Columbile Leaves in Milk, beat them to a Poultice and lay them on the Outside of the Throat, and gargle with the Milk. Ditto. A very good Purge which may be taken Daily. An Ounce of Jallap to a Pint of Gin, to be taken, a Table Spoonful as a Dose, or more as the Constitution may require. Ditto. For a Swelled Sore Throat Take a handfull of Elder flowers, boiled in Milk and put to it as much white wine as will turn it, sweetened with Honey, drink this [Posset] hot, going to Bed, and lay the Curd and flowers to the Throat, as hot as you can bear it. and let it remain till cold Repeat it if there is occasion and keep yourself warm. 6 For a Canker or sore Mouth. Take a Powder of Allum, & Bole Armoniac, an equal Quantity, and the weight of both, in flower of Brimstone, mix all with honey and anoint the mouth frequently. Ditto. For a Deafness. Take one Spoonful of Goose-grease, one Ditto of Rum, and one of water. Mix all together, soak a piece of Cotton in it, & put it into the Ear Ditto. Sir William Duncan’s Recipe for a sore Throat. Take from thirty or forty Drops of Spirit of Sea Salt, One Ounce of Honey of Roses and seven Ounces of Barley-water, and gargle with it frequently. In thirty years practice Sir William never lost one Patient, with an ulcerated or any other sore throat, and never used any other remedy but this. 7 If the Distemper be very malignant, the Dose of Sprit of Salt may be increased to sixty or seventy Drops. Note. An Ounce of liquid is two Spoonfuls. For a Putrid Fever. Take an hundred Drops of the strong smoking Spirit of Sea Salt, add to it three Pints of Barley-water. Let the Patient drink this Quantity within twenty four Hours. The above may be taken by way of prevention if there is any Danger of taking the Infection Lady Stapleton For a Hoarseness. Boil two Ounces of Mutton [Servet] in a Pint of Milk and Drink it warm. Mrs Willis 8 For an Inflammation in the Bowels A Poultice of Bread and Milk put on the Bowels as warm as you can bear it, (that is little more than Blood warm, but not too hot,) and then warm Flannels renewed, to keep the Poultice warm, It will procure a Passage in four Hours, when every thing else has failed. Lady Stapleton. Extract of Malt A most excellent remedy for a Cough or Spitting of Blood. Take one Peck of Malt Ground, mesh it with two Gallons of Water, cover it close till cold, strain the Liquor, Boil it for two hours, minding to take off the Scum as it rises. strain it through a Jelly-bag, set it again on the Fire, till it becomes as thick as Treacle. Take the Tea Spoonsfull at a time, very often in the Course of the Day. Mrs Delamain. 9 A Purge of Doctor Ward’s. Take a Quarter of an Ounce of Senna, picked from the Stalks, put it into a Teapot, with about fifty Juniper-berries. pour on it boiling water, and drink half a Pint or more as may be necessary. An excellent Recipe for a sore Leg, or a galled Horse. Venice Turpentine and the yolk of an Egg beat up together, into the consistency of soft Pomatum, and spread upon Rag or a Bit of Leather. This should be applied to the part affected, which must be previously bathed with warm Rum or Brandy & water. Mrs Wyke. Saline Draughts. excellent. To a moderate sized Wine Glass of strained lemon-juice, add by degrees, salt of Wormwood, (or Salt of Tartar) till the fermentation is quite subsided, and 10 and the mixture tastes saltish, then add double the Quantity of simple Water, and a couple of Lumps, (not too large) of Sugar, when the Patient is low, a Teaspoonful of Lavender drops, peppermint-water, or Cinnamon-water, may be added, three large Spoonfull as a Dose, three or four times a Day, as Circumstances may require in in feverish or Cholic Cases. Mrs. Martin Byam For a Wrench in the Back. Take Turpentine & Spirit of Hartshorn, of each half an Ounce, and mix them in a Morter stirring them continually one way till it be thick enough to spread upon Leather for a Plaister, and apply it to the part affected Mrs Willis. An excellent Recipe for the Dropsy. Take of the Lungs of Oak, and Broom of each two hands full of Ground-ivy, one handfull 11 Pellitory of the wall, one handfull, Marshmallow-roots one handfull, put these into two Gallons of water, with two pounds of Sugar, let it boil all together till it is consumed to one quart, Give a Teacup of it twice a day, in any sort of Liquor. This has done the greatest cures imaginable. Mrs. Willis. A Plaister for an Ague. Cut a piece of Leather in the shape of a Heart, as large as the Stomach requires it, prick it with the Pint of your Scissors allover, then spread it as thick as you can, with Venice Turpentine, then with a Stiff Feather spread all over the Turpentine Olibanum finely powdered and sifted, then over that grate a Nutmeg, and press it down with your hand, Two hours before the fit comes on apply it to the Pit of the Stomach, with the peaked end upwards, If you spread it the Day before you lay it on, it will stick the better, Bind it on at first, and let it stay on as long as it will stick. Mrs Willis 12 For a Fever. Bruise some Garlic and spread it on a fine rag but don’t let the Garlic come next the Wrist where it is to be applied every three hours, till sleep or ease is procured, and if the Patient is in a very dangerous way, then apply it likewise to the feet. Mrs. Willis. St Vitus’s Dance. Attested by two Ladies, to have been cured in a Child, in the following manner. Put a young Puppy in the Bed, upon the Neck or breast of the Patient, which soon took the Infection from the Person, and was disordered in the same manner till it died, and then a second was put in its place, and so on, for a whole litter of seven puppies, which all died, and the Girl was perfectly cured and lived to grow up. Ditto. To make Tincture of Myrrh To a Quart of rectified spirits of Wine, add four ounces of Myrrh finely powdered, let it stand a Month or two, often shaking the Bottle, then filter it through blotting Paper and it is fit for use. Ditto. 13 For the Rheumatism. Gum Guaiacum one Ounce, Sal volatile four Ounces, Infuse them in a Bottle with a flint Stopper, two Days, shaking it often. Take a Tea Spoonfull of it, in a Glass of water, in a Morning fasting. and the last thing at night. When the Patient is in pain, or has any Symptoms, but if it should purge too much, then forbear the use of it, and take it at discretion. N.B. It must not be taken on a full Stomach. [illegible] Mrs Willis. For a Consumption. Take Calve’s Pluck while it is warm before it is washed, and cut it small, put it in to a Still with a Gallon of Milk, and a Quart of Snails bruised, Mint, Balm & Hysop, of each an Handfull, Draw off three quarts of water, and sweeten it with white Sugar Candy, and drink it twice a Day. Ditto. 14 Tincture of Ipecuanha. Take an Ounce of the Powder of Ipecacuanha and a quarter of an Ounce of Orange peel, put them into a pint of white Wine, and infuse them warm them filter it for use, give two Ounces for a Dose, or an Ounce & a half for a weaker Person. Ditto. For a Purging in a young Child. Take a Pint of red Wine, two ounces of Rice, half an Ounce of Cinnamon, boil all together into a Poultice, and apply it with warm Cloths to the Child’s Belly, and it will ease the Gripes and Stop the Purging. Ditto To Cure the Itch. Take two Ounces of the flower of Brimstone, two Ditto of Bay-salt two Ditto of Butter that has had no salt in it, put them all together in a new pipken, with half a Gill of white Wine Vinegar, and Simmer it over the Fire, stirring it all the time till it is well mixed, then Anoint the Palms of the hands, for nine 15 nights, rubbing it well in before the fire, for a quarter of an hour the Hands must not be washed, nor the person shifted for the nine days, wearing Gloves the whole time. Mrs. Willis. For a Hoarseness. Take Spermacete & Sugar candy, of each equal parts, and make them into a fine Powder, or a Tea Spoonfull of Barbadoes Tar, in a Glass of old Rum and water, every night when going to rest. Three our four Wellfleet Oysters swallowed early in the Moring fasting, afford surprising relief in this Complaint. Ditto. A Discovery of Doctor Cluthick’s secret for the Cure of the Stone & Gravel. Take one Tea Spoonfull of the Strongest Soap-lye mixed in two table spoonfulls of sweet Milk, an hour before Breakfast and at going to Bed, before you take the Medicine, take a small cup of pure Milk, and after swallowing it another If you find this agrees with you for two or three Days you may add half as much more to the Dose. 16 For a Cough. Best Gum Armoniac, one Drachm & a half Soap pills ten grains, fresh Squills three Grains, simple Syrup sufficient to make 24 Pills, four to be taken in the forenoon. the same at Bed time Mr Monk at Bath. A Choice Receipt to make Opodeldoc. Take of Hungary-water a Pint, Castile Soap sliced, three Ounces, Camphor one Ounce, let them stand together in a Glass closely stopped, till the Soap and Camphor are entirely dissolved.’ To make Steers’s Opodeldoc. The Best Castile Soap dissolved in as much Camphorated Spirits of Wine, as will make it of a proper Consistency. To make Camphorated Spirits of Wine Dissolve an Ounce of Camphor ina Pint of Spirits of Wine. 17 Spermaceti Ointment. Take a quarter of a Pint of the best Sallad Oil, a quarter of a Pound of white Wax, and half an Ounce of Spermaceti, melt these together over a gentle Fire, and keep them continually stirring, till the Ointment is quite cold. This Ointment is quite efficacious in preventing Pits on the Face after the Small-pox. An excellent Lipsalve. Is made by adding a quarter of an Ounce of Alkinet Root, to the Spermaceti Ointment & simmering them together, a few minutes over a gentle Fire, and then Straining it through Muslin To make Lavender Water Take of Lavender Flowers a Pound and a half of Proof Spirit of Molasses a Gallon, and Distill off five Pints. N .B. The Spirit of Molasses is nothing more then New Rum. 18 To make Hungary Water. Take of fresh Rosemary tops, a pound an a half of Proof Spirits of Molasses, a Gallon and distill off five Pints. To make Lavender Drops. Take of Lavender water a Pint and a half, of Hungary-water half a Pint, of Cinnamon and Nutmegs each a quarter of an ounce, of red [sand???] Powdered a Drachm and a half. Let them infuse together in a Glass bottle well stopped for a Month, then strain off the Liquor for use. To make Lime-water. Pour a Gallon of boiling water on a pound of unslacked Lime, stir them well together, and let the water remain on the Lime for 24 Hours, Then strain off the Liquor for use. Receipt for any Consumptive Complaint or where the Person is weakly vide next Page 19 Recipe for any Consumptive Complaint. etc. The white of a new laid Egg beat up with a Lump or two of Sugar, and mix’d with two Table Spoonsfull of Bristol (or any soft water) or Rose-water, If it should be too cold for the Stomach, a small quantity of Brandy, or Ginger may be added. To be taken every Day at twelve and at three or four o’Clock Miss Long To make cold Cream an excellent Remedy to prevent being-pitted after the Small-pox & to preserve the Skin to old Age Take half a Pint of the Oil of sweet Almonds, three quarters of an ounce of Virgin wax, half an Ounce of Spermaceti, and a piece of Camphor of the Size of a Nutmeg, put all into a wide mouthed Bottle, and set it in a saucepan over the Fire, till it is dissolved, then put it into a large Bason, with some water, and beat it well with a Spoon, Shift the water three or four times, and beat it a great while, then squeese it as dry as you can, put it into small Gallipots, but not too full, as it keeps better with a Little Rosewater at the top of each and tied down very close. Lady Craven 20 Best Ointment for a Burn. Take the yellow Moss that grows on old Stone-walls, then shred a good Quantity of Mutton suet, and put in as much of the Moss as you can boil conveniently when it is very yellow, strain and keep it for use, melt it and anoint the part with a Feather, and dip a rag into it and bind it on, and dress it twice a Day. Mrs Willis. To make yellow Salve. Take a quarter of a Pound of Bees-wax, Ditto of Frankincense, half a pound of Burgundy pitch melt them well together strain it, and let it stand till almost cold, then anoint your hands with Butter or Oil, to prevent its sticking, and make it into Rolls. It is good for all cuts, bruises, or sores, It will dissolve, or break and heal a sore breast. If you melt it and dip a Cloth in it, to make a Cere-Cloth it is good for Strains, and almost every thing except a Burn Mrs Willis 21 To make Syrup of Diacordium. Boil seven ounces of white Poppy-heads well sliced with the Seeds, in three Quarts of water, for five or six hours, till it comes to a Pint, Then put to it two Pounds of Sugar, and let it just boil to dissolve the Sugar, but you must strain the Liquor well off before you put the Sugar to it, A Dose to compose a grown Person is half an Ounce a Child a Teaspoonfull. Mrs Willis To make a Syrup of Mulberries. Squeese your Mulberries through a Cloth, and to a Pint of Juice put twenty eight Ounces of the best Sugar set it into a Pan of warm water, and keep it over the Fire tillt he Sugar is dissolved, but don’t let it boil Ditto For the Stone. Hog’s Hoofs hung up and dried, and then powdered The Patient to take a Tea Spoonfull night and Morning in a little Syrup of Marshmallows, and wash it down with a little wine & water. Lady Anne Capell 22 For a Cough. Six Ounces of Fennel water One Ounce of the Oil of Almonds, One Ounce of the Syrup of Balsam, and two Drachms of Salvolatile. Ditto Broth to cure the most obstinate Cough. Take one Dozen of Huckle bones of sheep, (By Hucklebones is meant the Shanks and kneepans) Two ounces of Hartshorn shavings, a Crust of Bread, Boil them in three Quarts of water till it is reduced to three Pints, drink a Coffee Cup full when you wake in a Morning, sleep half an hour or an Hour after it, and take another Cup of it when you go to bed, you may take a Cup in the Daytime if you please. I have seen many hundred Instances of the good Effects of this Medicine, and never knew it once to fail, if the Patient was not too far gone to admit of a Cure, said Lady Halifax 23 To make Surfeit Waters. To one Gallon of the best Brandy, put four Pounds of red Poppies, after standing three Days strain it off, and put in four Pounds more of Poppies, and the following Ingredients, viz. half a Pound of Dates, half a Pound of Figs, one Pound of Raisins stoned, Carraway Seeds one Ounce Bruised, Angelica Seeds one ounce bruised Mace, Cinnamon, and Nutmegs, of each a quarter of an Ounce, Cloves one Ounce, all these must be powdered fine one pound Brown Sugar Candy pounded fine Hot Angelica water one Pint, a quarter of a Pound of Stick Liquorish, let it stand three weeks stirring it every Day, a week before you squeese it off, put in a quart of Brandy, and one handfull of Marygold Flower and one handfull of Balm. This is a very fine Medicine 24 A Certain Cure for the Bite of a Mad Dog. By Doctor Mead. Let the Patient be blooded at the Arm nine or ten ounces, take of Ashcoloured ground Liverwort, cleaned dried and Powdered, half an Ounce of black pepper Powdered two Drachms; mix these well together, and divide the Powder into four Doses, One of which must be taken every Morning Fasting, for four successive mornings, in half a Pint of Cows milk warm. After these Doses are taken the Patient must go into the Cold Bath or a cold Spring or River, every Morning fasting for a Month, but not stay longer in (with his head above water) than half a Minute, if the Water is very cold, After this he must go in three times a week, for a fortnight longer. N.B. The Ashcoloured ground Liverwort is a very common herb, and generally grows in Sandy and Barren Soils all over England; The right time to gather it is in the Months of October & November. 25 A Recipe of Sir George Baker’s for a Hoarseness. Take a new laid Egg, put it into a Cup with the Shell unbroke, pour in as much Vinegar as will cover it, let it remain till the Shell is quite dissolved, (which it will be in twenty four Hours,) then beat it well up together, and sweeten it with brown Sugar Candy. and take it immediately. Rasberry Vinegar very good for a Cough. Fill an Earthen, or any other Bottle full of Raspberries fresh pulled, then pour your Vinegar over them, as much as the Bottle will contain, stop it very close with a Cork, let it stand a Month in the Cellar, then strain it off and to every pint of juice add a Pound of fine Sugar, Boil it up to the Consistence of a Syrup, and when cold, Bottle it. Take it as often as your Cough is troublesome. Adml Cosby 26 A Pectoral Drink for a Cough Take a Pound of Figs, a Pound of Jar Raisins, and a few Sticks of Liquorish, pour upon them a Quart or three Pints of Barley-water, made of Pearl Barley, let it stand till it is cold and it is an excellent Drink. When half is used you may add a Pint of Barley water to what remains. Ditto White Wine Whey A Pint of Skimmed Milk and half a Pint of white Wine in a Bason, let it stand a few minutes, then pour over it a Pint of boiling water let it stand a little and the Curd will gather into a Lump, and settle at the Bottom, pour it off and sweeten it. Mrs Martin Byam. Doctor James’s method of making Beef Tea. Take a Pound of the leanest part of good Beef cut off all the fat and Skin, set it on the Fire with two Quarts of water, a little Salt, and a Blade of Mace, let it boil very slowly, till it comes to a Quart. Then pour it off for use. 27 To make Oil of Cucumber for a Pleurisy. Take three handsfull of Cucumbers when sliced, (with their Skins on,) fry them in a Quart of the best Oil, take the first frying out of the Oil, and lay them in a Dish. Then make a piece of Steel red hot, an d quench it in the Oil, then take three handsfull of fresh Cucumbers, fry them in the same manner, and when fried take them out, and put them to the others in the Dish, quenching the red hot Steel in the Oil as before. This do seven times still taking out the fried Cucumbers, and adding three handsfull every time, and quenching the red hot Steel every time in the Oil, when you have taken out the last, then take all the fried Cucumbers out of the Dish, & put them in a Cloth and squeese the juice to what remains of the Oil, and when it is cold Bottle it for use. The way to use it, is to take a Spoonfull and warm it, Rub the Side the pain is in very well, and the other side too, then lay a piece of Brown Paper on it & some warm tow over it, and bind a Cloth well over it. It will cure in three or four times doing and has never been known to fail Mrs Willis 28 The Worms in Children. Put five Quarts of Spring water to one Pound of Lime, let it stand till the Ebullition ceases, & till it is clear, then pour it off and filtrate it through Paper; To a Gallon of this Water put on e Quart of the best Norway Tar, stir it with a flat Stick five or six minutes, take off th e Scum as it rises, and the next morning draw it off with a Crane, and keep it in Bottles well stopped The Dose for Children of three or four years old, is two Spoonsfull three times a Day, for those of six or seven or thereabouts three four or five Spoonsfull. N.B. If it gets thick, it must be filtrated just before it is taken. To prepare the Child, give three Purges of Calomel, and the night after the Purge, give a Glyster of wormwood, and water and Salt. Mrs Willis For the Scurvy. A handfull of Damask Roses boiled in half a pint o f sweet milk till it is reduced to a Quarter of a Pint to be sweetened with Syrup of Roses, and taken twice a week in the Summer Season, as long as they are good. Mrs Willis 29 To Cure Epileptic fits. never known to fail. Take fifteen Grains of Ipecuanha at night, and the next morning, take twenty grains of the Powder of the Cuckoo-flower, and hour before you rise, mixed in a little cold water, repeat the same a hour before Dinner, and going to Bed, continue this quantity for some Days, then increase the Quantity to thirty grains each time, and it may be increased afterward to a greater number of Grains, with perfect Safety, and Care should be taken to keep the Body from costiveness, Rhubarb and magnesia have been found very proper for that purpose. The Cuckoo-flower blossoms in may, and shou’d be gathered in dry Weather and before it turns to Seed. The Flowers must be picked from the Stalk and Seeds then spread on pewter Dishes before the fire and dried as quick as possible, when they are perfectly dry they will rub into Powder, or you may pound or grind them, Put the Powder into clean and perfectly dry Bottles, with a Leather tied over the mouth, and prick holes in the Leather that being better than Corks in your Bottles, and keep them in a very dry place. The Cuckoo-flower or Lady’s Smock as it is vulgarly called grows in damp Meadows, or near small Streams of Water. Mrs Chantery 30 For Complaints in the Breasts. Take of Draculum simple, two Ounces, the same quantity of Dealthea Ointment, and three Drachms of Camphor melt and mix all these well together, and put it in a Gallipot When wanted spread it on thickish Cloth, and lay it all over the Breast, (cutting a hole for the Nipple,) If the Breast is hard with the Milk, or curdled or Swelled. If the Breast is broke, take Basilicum, spread it on Lint, and cover the Hole or Holes, and take your Plaister of the above Ointment and cover the Breast all over with it. This is a most excellent remedy, and has never faild, for any Complaint in the Breast after Lying-in, etc. etc. Mrs Chantry A Certain Cure for an Ague. First give twenty or thirty Grains of Ipecuanha five Hours before the Fit. About an hour before the Fit give the following in Bed, drinking after it now and then, some white Wine Whey or any other warm Drink, Take sixty grains of Venice Treacle, one whole Nutmeg grated, thirty Grains of [Roach] Allum twenty Drops of Liquid Laudanum, and four Table Spoonsfull of white wine vinegar, mix these very well together as a Draught for man. Ditto 31. A very fine Lipsalve. Half an Ounce of Spermaceti, the same quantity of Hogslard, An Ounce of the Oil of sweet Almonds and a Quarter of an Ounce of White Wax, with about thirty Raisins of the Sun, stoned and chopt very fine, put them in a Silver or Earthen Pipkin, and melt it gently over the Fire, and before you strain it, add fourteen or fifteen Drops of the Balsam of Peru, to give it a fine rose Colour, Strain it through Muslin Ditto. To Make Huxham’s Tincture of Bark. Take one Ounce of the best powdered Bark, six Drachms of dried Orange Peel, two Drachms of Snakeroot, and one of Saffron, and twenty Grains of Cochineal, Infuse these in ten Ounces of Brandy in a Bottle with a Glass stopper for a week or ten Days, often shaking the Bottle. The Dose is two or three Tea Spoonsful, three times a Day Mrs M: Byam An Excellent Gargle for an inflamed Throat. Borax finely Powdered one Drachm, Clarified Honey one Ounce mix them well together, by rubbing them in a Marble Mortar, then gradually add six ounces of Spring Water, and use it often. Mr Perkins 32 Recipe, To make Pills for Billious or Rheumatic People, given by Doctor James to Sir George Thomas His Analeptic Pills I suppose. One Drachm of James’s Powder, one Ditto of Gum Guaiacum one Ditto of Pillula Rufi made up into thirty six Pills, to be taken three or four discretionally going to Bed. (at night) with something warm. For the Scurvy in the Face. Boil four Ounces of the Root of Water Dock in three Pints of Water, to a Quart, take half a Pint three times a Day. Doctor Buchan in his book gives an Account of its Virtues Lady Anne Cape.. For the Scurvy in the Blood and in the Face. Take two handsfull of the inner rind of witch Hazel, strip it into cold Spring water, let it stand 24 Hours, and wash your Face with it twice a Day. At the same time take two handsfull of the inner rind of Elder, boil it in spring water, till all the virtue is drawn from the Elder, sweeten it with the best brown Sugar, and drink half a Pint morning and night. N.B. As long as you continue to wash your Face with the above, you must remember to drink the Quantity before mentioned, or it will cause an Inflammation in your Bowels. Ditto 33. For an Ague. Five Drachms of the best Bark finely Powdered, two Ounces of best Honey, and two Spoonsfull of the Syrup of Camphire, mix these well together, and take one third of it, for three Mornings in water gruel, or any warm liquor Beginning the Morning the Fit is not expected, If this quantity does not cure, miss three Mornings, and take it in the same manner again. Lady Anne Capell To make Sweets. Three handsfull of Orange Flowers Ditto of Clove Jellyflowers. Ditto of Damask Roses. Ditto of Lavender flowers, one handfull of sweet marjoram Ditto of Mint flowers, Ditto of Rosemary. Ditto of Myrtle, Ditto of sweet Basil, six Bay-leaves, the rinds of two Lemons, and one Ounce of Cloves in Powder. Ditto For a bad Digestion. Seven or eight grains of the best Turkey Rhubarb, with the same Quantity of Camomile Flowers finely Powdered, and a little grated Ginger, either made into Pills with a little simple Syrup, or taken in a Table Spoonfull of Mint water, to be taken at one or two O Clock, every Day. This a very fine Strengthener of the Stomach Doctor Frazer 34 To make Sugar Vinegar. To twenty Pounds of Brown Sugar add twenty Gallons of water, put your Sugar into a large Tub, and having made the water Boil, pour it upon it, let it stand for eight or ten Hours, frequently stirring it, till the Sugar is entirely dissolved. Then put a clean Cloth over the head of the Barrel you intend to put it into, and strain it through it, but before you do that, have a Pound of the best Ginger thinly sliced and put into the Cask, and after you have put in the Sugar and Water, have a piece of Bread of the thickness of common toast, toasted well on both sides, and spread on both sides with good yest the same as you would with butter, and put that likewise into your Barrell, which you must be sure to have very nice & Clean & well seasoned. After standing four or five Months, it will become the finest Vinegar that can be made, infinitely preferable to the finest White Wine Vinegar that can be made, and makes the best Pickles in the world, & if they are wanted for immediate use you may add half water to this Vinegar, it is so extremely acid, only you must Boil it well with the Water before you put it to your Pickles, adding a Little Salt at the same time. 35 An Excellent Receipt to make Lozenges for the Heartburn Take four Ounces of Chalk, three of Coral one of Crab’s eyes five scruples of Bole Armoniac, one of Pearl, one of Nutmegs, add to these a Pound of white Sugar Candy, Beat them very small, an d mix them well together, make them into a thin Paste, with three or four Spoonsfull of Spring-water, cut them into small Cakes less than a Sixpence, save some of the Ingredients dry to make them p with. Lady Martin A fine Drink in a Fever. Pour some boiling Water, upon a Sufficient quantity of Cream of Tartar, to make it of a pleasant Acid, add a little Lemon Peel to give it a flavour, sweeten it to your taste, and drink a teacup of it when thirsty. Mrs. Neale’s Book An Excellent Receipt for the Ague A Drachm of the best Bark, half a Drachm of [vin??d] Treacle twenty Drops of Elixir of Vitriol, or some juice of Lemon, mix this in a Glass of White wine and Drink it when you go to Bed for three nights, and in a week or ten Days, take half the Quantity to prevent a return. Half the Quanty for a Child or weak Person Ditto 36 An Excellent Cordial. Take an Ounce and a half of white Sugar Candy or Double refined Sugar, a Piece of Saffron about as big as the end of your thumb, the whole Peel of a Seville Orange, and a Quart of the best French Brandy, let them infuse for three or four Days, then take out the Saffron, and the Peel, after squeesing out all the Goodness, A small Quantity of this is a fine Cordial for any disorder at the Heart, or to drive out any rush in the Blood. Ditto Receipt for the Gravel. Take the white of an Egg, beat up with a spoonful of sweet Oil, and two Spoonsfull of white wine, take it at any time when in Pain. Ditto Recipe for the Gou tor Rheumatism in the Stomach A head of Garlic peeled and put into a Quart of the Best Brandy, take a Glass when in pain. Ditto For a Person who has lost his Speech by the Palsy. Set some milk over the Fire, when it boils, put a large Spoonfull of Mustard into it, when it is turned to a Curd apply it to the throat & Glands, as warm as it can be born. Ditto 37 For a Bleeding at the Nose Bruise a Stinging Nettle that has a red Root, and snuff some of the Juice up your Nose, and it will instantly stop it. N.B. but you should not stop it too soon, as it is often very beneficial. Ditto. Receipt for a Deafness. Oil of bitter Almonds a Drachm, Oil of Amber half a Drachm, Oil of Rosemary & Marjoram eight Drops, mix all well together, and drop three Drops upon a little Cotton, and put it into the ear when going to Bed. Ditto. For the Cramp in the Stomach A Spoonfull of the best sweet Oil sugared when you go to bed. Ditto. A Strengthening Butter The peel of eight large Seville Oranges boiled in three Pints of Water, till nearly half is consumed, then strain it off, and sweeten it to your taste with fine Sugar, take three Spoonsfull tow or three hours before Dinner and the same in the Afternoon, for two or three Months together. Ditto. 38 For a Pain in the Side Take an equal Quantity of Camphorated Spirits of Wine, and Spirit of Turpentine mixed, anoint Anoint the part very well, and they lay on a Piece of warm Flannel. Do For immediate ease in the Stone. Two Spoonfulls of the finest Sweet Oil and [Sack] beat up, together with the white of a new laid Egg, and taken immediately. Ditto For a Womans Breast when she lies in, whether she Suckles or not. Warm some of the nicest Pomatum which has no Perfume in it, except a little simple Rosewater and anoint the Breasts with it for three or four days, As soon as that is done have ready a piece of fine soft Flannel dipt in warm Brandy, and lay on each Breast. This will prevent a Fever or knotted Breasts Ditto 39 A Strengthening Medicine. Boil a piece of Comfry Root, as big as about half your finger, in half a Pint of Milk, till it becomes thickish, strain it off, and drink a Coffee Cup full twice a Day. Ditto. To prevent a Miscarriage. The following Medicine and a handfull of garden Tansy, made scalding hot in Vinegar, and squeesed out and put in a flannel Bag, and applied to the Navel pretty warm, cured a Lady who had miscarried twelve times. Take six quarts of fresh Milk, the Whites of forty Eggs well beaten, then take two hands full of [one] candied Eringo Root, and two of Clary shred fine’ mix this with your Milk and Eggs, and distill’ them in a cold Still; Drink a Glass in the morning fasting, and at night going to Bed, Sweeten it to your taste with fine Sugar as you drink it. Drink this till you are Quick. Ditto 40 For Convulsions in Children Take a Chicken cut it up in the Back while it is warm, and immediately put the Guts into a Pint of Milk, which let Boil till it comes to half a Pint, give it as a Glister warm, to be repeated as you see occasion. Ditto. Cholic Tincture One Pound of Raisons Stoned, and cut pretty fine, Two Drachms of Coriander & sweet Fennel Seeds, ½ Drachm of Saffron, and one Drachm of Liquorish and one Ounce of the best Rhubarb, infused in a Quart of the best French Brandy, for a fortnight Strain it off and add a Pint and quarter more to the Ingredients, let it stand a Month, and mix it all together, and add some Cardamom Seeds. Take three large spoonsfull when in Pain. Ditto. For the Headache. A Teaspoonfull of Salvolatele, and the same of Spirits of Lavender, in a small cup full of simple Peppermint Water taken going to Bed Ditto 41 For a Sore Throat. Take an equal Quantity of Vinegar & Rum, and Bath the outside of the throat by a good Fire, and then put a piece of warm Flannel round it. To be repeated often. Ditto. To make Bitters. To a Quart of the Best Brandy, add the Peel of Six Seville Oranges, a Quarter of an Ounce of Gentian sliced, the same of Cardamum Seeds bruised, and one Drachm of Saffron, with half an Ounce of best Bark grossly powdered. Let it be well stopped, and stand a Month near the Fire or in the Sun, shaking it every Day, and at the Months end filter it for use. Ditto A Remedy for sore Gums & loose Teeth Boil some Oak leaves in Spring water, add a few Drops of Spirit of Sulphur, and wash the Mouth very well with it every Morning while necessary. 42 A Sure Preservative against the Toothache After having cleaned your teeth, rinse your Mouth every Morning, with a Teaspoonfull of Lavender-water, mixed with an equal Quantity of water. This simple and innocent remedy, is a certain preservative, the Success of which has been confirmed by long Experience. Ditto To Clean the Teeth. An Ounce of Myrrh very finely powdered, a Teaspoonful of the best white Honey, and a little Garden Sage finely powdered, mix them well together, and rub the teeth and Gums with a little of this Balsam every night & morning. Ditto A Certain Cure for Corns. Roast a Clove of Garlic on a live Coal in hot Ashes, apply it to the Corn, and fasten it on with a piece of Cloth the moment of going to Bed. Renew this application, for three or four nights successively, It softens the Corn to such a Degree, that it loosens and entirely removes the Core however inveterate, afterwards wash the feet with a little warm water. In a little time the Indurated Skin, that forms the Horny part of the Corn will disappear and leave the part as clean and Smooth as if it had never been attacked with any disorder Ditto 43 For an Ague Take Oil of Amber, anoint the persons Backbone therewith from the Nape of the Neck, to the lowest Joint two hours before you expect the fit, let them go to bed, and drink of warm White Wine Whey, to promote a perspiration. Do this three times and it never fails to Cure, If it is a Poor Person warm small [Beer] will have the same effect. Ditto For the Dropsy. The efficacy of the Ashes of Tobacco, in the Cure of Dropsies, discovered by Doctor Garden of South Carolina is confirmed by several Abbot’s Acts from America, It is given from the Quantity of half a Drachm to a whole Drachm twice a Day, in as little Liquid as possible, much exercise is to be used during the Operation, & very little Drink. It is diuretic and purgative. A little Rhubarb and salt of Steel is usually given every second Day after it. This Singular Medicine is also reported to have been used at Edinburgh, with great Success. Ditto For a Cold and tightness at the Stomach. An ounce of Spermaceti, the same of fine Sugar rubbed very well together, add the yolks of two new laid 44 new laid Eggs, and one Table Spoonfull of Old Rum, with as much pure water as will make a Pint of it and take if often. Ditto A Liquid Balsam for the Rheumatism, Take three Ounces of Sarsaparilla sliced & bruised One Quart of fine Spirits of Wine, let these stand in a wide mouthed Bottle, closely stopped, for three Days in the Sun, or by the Fire. Then Strain out the Liquor, very hard, and add to it four Ounces of Gum Guaiacum, digest it again three Days, then strain it off as before add one Ounce and half of the Balsam of Peru, digest it again three Days more, then pour the Liquor into small Vials, Cork and seal them down, One Teaspoonfull of this for a Child or weak person, in a Cup of any warm Liquid to be taken going to Bed, and two, three, or four, for a Man or Woman going to bed, every night, drinking something warm after it to promote perspiration. In a few Nights it will cure the Rheumatism, wash any wound with it, and put a healing Plaister over it, and it will cure it. ten or twelve Drops taken every morning in Spring water, will cure a broken Vein in the Stomach Ditto 45 Cure for Worms. Take twelve Grains of Rhubarb, and twelve Grains of Powdered Rue, that has been dried Green, rest two Nights and repeat the Same. Ditto An Antiseptic for an Ulcerated sore throat, or in any Putrid Case. Take a handfull of the Leaves of Rue, Rosemary and Roman Wormwood, boil them well in two Quarts of Vinegar then strain it off for use, and to be used as follows. A Gill to be made boiling hot, several times a Day, and sprinkle about the Bed and Room, and some of it thrown upon a red hot poker. For An Ulcerated Sore Throat. The Best Bark bruised two Ounces, Columbine Root bruised half an Ounce, Snake root & Camomile Flowers, of each a quarter of an Ounce, add three Pints of boiling water, let it infuse in a covered vessel till cold, then add a Pint of old red Port, let the whole digest for twenty four Hours, filter it through Paper and keep it in Pint Bottles well Corked, give two large Spoonfuls to Children from five to eight years old, three from Eight to Twelve, and four, from twelve to Sixteen, which is also the Dose for an Adult. This Infusion shou’d be taken night & Morning for two or three Weeks. Ditto 46 To Cure the Jaundice. Take three New laid Eggs, dry them in an Oven, or before the Fire, beat them very fine, and sift them through a Lawn Sieve, then take one Nutmeg grated, ten grains of Saffron, finely Powdered, and a piece of Loaf Sugar, about the Size of a Walnut. mix all well together and divide it into seven Papers, let a Child take one every morning fasting in a little Wine, drinking some after it, a full grown Person must have five Eggs, and twenty grains of Saffron. Ditto For a Consumption. Two Ounces of the expressed juice of Horehound, mixed with a Pint of Cows milk, and sweetened with honey, taken half in the Morning and the other half at night. Ditto. For a Consumption. Melt yellow Beeswax and white Pitch, over a Chafing dish and hold your head over the Smoke. Ditto An Alterative Two Ounces of Cream of Tartar, one Ditto of Flour of Brimstone one Ditto of Aethiop’s mineral mixed in half a Pound of Treacle take half a Spoonfull, half an hour after Breakfast, and the same Quantity going to Bed. If it operates too much, take it only at Night. Ditto 47 For a Sore Mouth. Half a Pint of Barley water, two Ounces of Honey of Roses two Drachms of Tincture of Myrrh, and a few Drops of Spirit of Vitriol, to be used ten or twelve times a Day, as a garble, particularly before and after Eating. Ditto. For the Gravel. Spanish Soap half an Ounce, Magnesia and Oyster Shells prepared, of each two Drachms, Powder of Rhubarb one Drachm Aromatic Spices, one Scruple, Oil of Juniper forty Drops. Syrup Mallows, a sufficient quantity, to make an Electuary Take the Quantity of a Nutmeg, every other Morning. Do For a Cough. Two heads of Garlic, to a Pint of Spring water, simmer it over the fire till reduced to half, strain it off, and add a quarter of a Pound of Brown Sugar candy, simmer it again, and skim it as long as any rises. A large Table Spoonfull to be taken night & Morning, and a little when the Cough is most troublesome. Ditto For night Sweats after a Fever. Boil some Bran and water well together, strain it off and add a Pint of Milk to it, drink half a pint of this sweetened with Honey, for find Sugar. Ditto 48 To make Imperial A Quarter of a Pound of Cream of Tartar, to two Gallons of water, boiled for five or six Minutes, pout it on the Rind of sour Lemons, and Pound and a half of Sugar, let it stand twenty four Hours, then run it through a Jelly-bag and Bottle it for use. A fine Emetic Take two Ounces of Horse Radish root cut in pieces pour on it a Quart of boiling water, let it stand an hour, and drink a Tea cup of it till it begins to Operate, work it off with Camomile tea. Keep in Bed an hour or two after it has done working. To make Elixir Proprietatis. Take an Ounce of Aloes, one Ounce of Powder of Myrrh One Ounce of Saffron, steep all these together in a Quart of French Brandy, this Quantity could bear a Pint more to be put to it when the quantity is used. Recipe for an Ague Five Drachms of the finest Bark, two ounces of fine Honey and two Spoonsfull of Syrup of Camphire, mixed very well together, and taken one third for three mornings together in Water gruel, or any other warm liquor, Beginning the 49 the Morning that the fit is not expected. If this does not cure miss three Mornings, and take it in the same manner again. Lady Ann Capell For a Cough. Six Ounces of Fennel water, one Ounce of Oil of Sweet Almonds One Ounce of Syrup of Balsam, and two Drachms of Salvolatile well mixed together, and two Spoonsfull taken three or four times a Day. Ditto For a Cataract coming on the Eye Take four or five Drops of Eather in the Palm of your hand, and put it up to your Eye (open) and hold it there for a few minutes, which must be done three or four times a Dahy. General [Trapand] For the Hiccough A Little Oil of Cinnamon or Spirits of Lavender, on a lump of Sugar. Mrs M: Byam. To procure Sleep Three quarters of a Pound of Hops put into your Pillowcase. Do. To stop a profuse Sweating. Thirty Grains of Sal Prunella in a Glass of Sweet Wine. Do Recipe for the Jaundice. The inside of the Bark of the Barberry tree boiled in white Wine till very strong take a Table Spoonfull every Morning fasting Ditto 50 For an Inflammation in the Eyes. The mild sweet Apple Roasted, and laid on as a poultice over the Eyes. Ditto For a Whitlow Lintseed boild in Milk till it comes to a poultice, and applied to the Finger. Ditto For the Gravel. Bruised Gizzards of Fowls when dried. Ditto A very good Purge. Half an Ounce of the best Manna, a quarter of an ounce of Senna, with the Stalks, nicely picked out, and a little Bit of Tamarind, with some grated Ginger. pour a Quarter of a Pint of boiling water upon these Ingredients, and let it stand for two or three Hours then strain it off and drink it. Ditto To make Almond Emultion. An Ounce of Almonds to a Pint of cold water, a little Sugar added to the Almonds, and beat very Fine in a Marble Mortar, the water to be added very gradually and then strained off. A Strengthening Plaister after a Sprain. When the Pain, Inflammation and swelling have subsided, by the usual means, take the white of an 51. Egg, well beaten, and spread it upon thin glove Leather, of a sufficient size to more than meets round the Joint grate a Nutmeg over the Egg when it is spread on the leather which must be snipped, as it may require to make it to yield to the Shape of the part, and stick close every where filleting it on securely with a long narrow filled, apply it at Night when the Limb may be at rest, not to disturb the Plaister in the Morning, the Bandage may be removed as the Plaister will then be sufficiently secure without it, wear it as long as it will Stick, which it will some times do a fortnight or longer, when it may be repeated if necessary. The intention being merely to guard against a repetition of the Accident from Weakness. Mrs Smith. To Make Pomade Divine for Cancers, Bruises etc. Take of Beef marrow a Pound and half picked clean from the Bones and filaments put it in an earthen Vessel full of Spring water, change the water twice a Day for ten Days, then Drink it and put a pint of Rosewater to it. let it stand twenty four Hours, then put it in a thin cloth, and drain it as dry as possible, add an Ounce of [Storax], an Ounce of Benjamin, an Ounce of Cyrus, the same quantity of Anii of Florence, half an Ounce of Cinnamon, two Drachms of Cloves and two of nutmegs all of these must be finely powdered and well mixed with the Marrow, put it into a pewter Vessel, that nothing 52 nothing may evaporate, suspend the Vessel in a Copper of boiling water, and let it Boil without ceasing three hours, having boiling water ready to replenish that in the Copper that the Vessel may be always covered, when it has boiled three Hours, Pour it through fine Muslin into small Pots, cover them when perfectly cold, when used melt it in a Silver Spoon, and anoint the part with it three times a Day, if it heats or inflames it must be discontinued. It is excellent for a Swelling and hardness of a sore Breast, but not when it is broken. Lady Young. To make simple Tincture of Myrrh Take of Myrrh half an Ounce, of Salt of Tartar two drachms mix them very well together and put them into a moist place for a week, then Add to it of rectified Spirits eight ounces and draw out the Spirit by a general heat. Compound Tincture of Murry Take of the Best Aloes and Myrrh of each an Ounce and of French Brandy one Pound digest it and strain it for use, Dowr Dutchess of Atholl 53 Tincture of Senna or Daffy’s Elixir. Take of Senna two Ounces, of Rhubarb one Ounce, of sweet Fennel Seeds, of Juniper Berries, of Shavings of Guiack wood, of each half an Ounce, of French Brandy three English Pints, digest all together for three Days, shaking the Bottle frequently, strain it and to the strained liquor add three ounces of fine Sugar, If you wish it to be more purgative, add to the above half an Ounce of Jallap Ditto For a Qunisey or swelling in the Throat, so that the Patient cannot swallow. Take a Toast of Household Bread as big as will cover the top of the head, well baked on both sides, (that is toasted) soak it in right French Brandy, let the top of the Head be shaved, and bind it on with a Cloth, If this be done at night going to bed it will cure before Morning. Dowr Dutchess of Atholl. To draw up the Uvula. Take ground Ivy, & heat it well between two Tiles, and lay it as warm as can be born on the Top of the Head. Ditto. For the Whooping Cough. Oil of Amber rubbed on the head, in that part of the Head where the Head Joins, Repeat it as often as it is thought proper. Brown Paper dipped in the Oil and bound on the part, is necessary to keep it moist In three Days a Cure may be expected. It will be right to shave the Head, if the Hair is too thick. Ditto 54 For Convulsions in Children. Take of white Sugar Candy, in fine Powder, one Ounce, trop into it an hundred and twenty Drops of the Oil of Anise seed, rub them together in a Mortar, then Mix with them an Ounce of Spermaceti in Powder. The Dose is twenty Grains in a little Breast milk once in three or four hours. Ditto. For Convulsions in Children Powder of Cream of Tartar 2 Drachms, Jallap-root 2 Drachms, Senna 2 Drachms, of Chemical Oil of Cloves eight Drops, as much Syrup of Orange Peel as will bring it to the consistency of an Electuary. Give the Quantity that will ly on the point of a very small knife – night and Morning, till the fits are entirely took off. Ditto For a Billious Complaint. A Quarter of a Grain of Tartar Emetic made into a Pill, take two of them a Day if the Complaint is bad and continue it a fortnight, If not violent one a Day, Adml Lord [Hotham] has known this do wonders A Certain cure for Costiveness, or the Iliac Passion. Take a large handfull of common Mallows, shred them small Boil them in a [Chopin] of Chicken Broth, strain it, and give 55 the Patient to drink before his ordinary Meals, if very ill you may give some every half hour. Dutchess of Atholl. For the Stranguary. Take half a Pint of Plantain water, one ounce of Sugar Candy finely powdered, two Spoonsfull of Sallad Oil and the Juice of a Lemon, beat all these well together and rink it. Ditto For the Rheumatism. The Oil or Essence of Camomile rubbed on the part before the Fire, at night going to Bed, and Camomile Tea drank twice a Day Mrs Fenwick A very fine thing for purifying the Blood, made use of by most of the French Physicians. The Leaf and Root of the Plantain well washed, the Root of Liquorice and leaves, some water Cresses well washed, and carefully picked, & known to be water cresses, a good handfull of each, boiled in three Pints of water, with about half a pound of Veal, till reduced to two pints, a Pint of which is to be drank Morning and Evening, for a month or six weeks, Spring and fall. N.B. No Breakfast is allowed when this is taken. Mrs. Fenwick 56. To make Saline Draughts. Take 20 Grains of Salt of wormwood, the same quantity of Lump Sugar, one Teaspoonfull of Brandy, one large Spoonfull of Lemon juice, and two large Spoonsfull of Water. Doctor Mapleton. Note Be carefull to cork the three Quart Bottle as close as possible, but not fill it quite full, lest the fermentation of the Liquor should cause the bursting of the Vessel. Brandy will not answer the purpose. Miss Gilbert. Beef Tea. Not quite three half pints of cool water, to one Pound of lean Beef and a little Salt, boiled as fast as possible for fifteen minutes. Miss Gilbert. Pounded Chicken an excellent thing for a weak Stomach. Take a large Chicken, either boil or roast it, pick the meat clean from the Skin & fat, then pound it in a marble Mortar, so fine that it will work through a hair search have ready some Val (or any kind of) Broth you like best, stir the Broth into the Chicken, till you have mixed it very smooth and well, and it is as thin as you chuse, put it over the fire to heat, stirring it all the time, One Quarter of a Chicken will make a Coffee cup full. Dowr Lady Westmoreland. A Poultice for Strain as ordered by Mr Hawkins. To about half a Pint of the finest Oatmeal, put a pint and a half of the Stalest and Strongest Beer you can get Boil it till it is very thick, and stir it all the time it is boiling, let it be only moist enough to spread, then spread it at least an Inch thick upon a Cloth. This Poultice is to be laid on the last thing at night, and taken off in the Morning The Foot must be washed with Brandy and after that 58 after that be well rubbed with Gall & Camphor, which must be mixed in the following manner, Take an Ox Gall as soon as it is killed, measure it and put to it an equal Quantity of Camphorated Spirits, Shake the Bottle before you use it, and always use it before you lay on the Poultice, and after taking it off, and two or three times a Day use it. A Good thing for weak Persons. Strong Chicken Broth, with about four large Spoonsfull of fine grated Bread to a Pint, mix a little Cold with the yolk of a new laid Egg & heat it but not to boil. Isinglass Flummery very good for sick People. Take half an Ounce of Isinglass pull it in thin Pieces, put it in a Pint of Milk, let it stand awhile then set it on the Fire to boil, till the Isinglass is quite melted, then put in Sugar to your taste, A little Orange flower, or Rose water, or what you like to make it palatable, Strain it through a Sieve, and put it into cups to Jelly, put a little water in your Cups to make it turn out easy. Put into one Quart of French Brandy, an Ounce of Gentian, One Drachm of Saffron, the yellow rind of three Seville Oranges, one Drachm of Cochineal, let it infuse in a Bottle close stopped, nine Days, shake it every Day then strain it and take two or three Tea Spoonsfull, in a Glass of White Wine before Dinner & Supper. Divide three Ounces of Saltpetre into 18 parts, take one every Morning & Evening, dissolved over the fire in near half a Pint of Strong Beer, it must be taken at least an hour before Breakfast & Supper. Sir Robert Rich To Cure a Hiccup or Hic Cough Light a bit of Paper, blow the flame out, and hold the Smoke under your Nose, some say eating a bit of Cheshire Cheese. Mem. A Piece of Chocolate cut in little bits as Lozenges, & taken in the same way will stop a Cough. Lady Westmoreland. A very fine Cure for a Sore Throat. Boil one Ounce of Myrrh, in half a Pint of Vinegar, pout it into a Bason, and put a Funnel over it, hold the Spout in your Mouth to let the Steam go down your throat, do it several times a Day, and keep the throat very warm. Ditto 60 Hiera Picra. One Ounce of Hiera Picra put into a clean dry Bottle, and put to it one Pint of Madeira Wine, shake it for 3 or 4 Days, then lit it stand eight more, and clear it into a Dry Bottle. Take a large Teaspoonfull a little before you eat your dinner for any Indigestion in your Stomach. Ditto For a Sick Headache. One Ounce of Ipecuanha Wine, and a quarter o f an Ounce of Antimonial Wine, worked off when the reaching has begun, with a moderate quantity of Camomile Tea, much not needfull. Doctor Fothergyle. For an Ague in the Head. Take Camomile Flowers, and put them over the Fire, with as much water as will keep them from burning, then take them off, and sprinkle over them some camphorated Spirits of wine, and foment the Head, as hot as you can bear it. Dutchess of Atholl. To Stay a Vomiting. Take Ash leaves, boil them in Vinegar, and put them in a flannel bag, then apply them to the Stomach warm & repeat it often Lady Cosby. 61 To Still Walnut Water. Take a good quantity of Walnuts about the beginning of July, or the end of June. bruise them to pieces, and distill them in a distillatory of Glass, keep the water by itself for a fortnight, and break fresh walnuts and put to it, distill it in a Glass Limbeck, when drawn off keep it close stopped for use. The Virtues are first, One drop in the eye strengthens mightily, and cures all Inflammations in the Eyes, secondly, It is good for Women who through weakness have no Children, taking one Spoonfull in a Morning fasting. Thirdly, It clears the Face, if washed with it. Fourthly. It helpeth the Palsy being drank in white Wine fasting. Fifthly, It procures Sleep, washing the Temples with it. Sixthly It wonderfully heals Blotches & wounds. Seventhly, It drives all Infirmities of the Body, being moderately taken in White wine. Eightly, It preserveth Live to the utmost of Nature. Ninthly, It revives dead Wine putting it in the Vessel and stopping it close. It is called the brightest of all Waters the Precious Water of Life Lady Westmoreland. A Dose of Senna Tea made strong is a very good Medicine for destroying and bringing away Worms, Give a Tea cupfull of it according the Age and Strength of the Person every other Morning. Doctor Mapleton recommends this 62 To fasten a Tooth that is loose. Boil the green leaves of the Woodbine, or Honeysuckle, stalk and all, to a very strong Decoction, and wash the Mouth with the Liquor every hour. If it is in Winter time the stalk will do alone. The above Decoction made Strong and used as a wash for the Eyes, is a most excellent thing, and has been known to restore the sight after absolute blinding has taken place. Lady Cosby’s Cook (Manser) was cured by it after having been blind for several Months. Another Recipe to fasten a loose Tooth. particularly if occasioned by a fall. Wash your Mouth every hour with Allum dissolved in strong Vinegar & water, and Sage Tea made very strong. Gum Borax will do as well as Allum. The Acid of the Vinegar is the Chief thing that fastens it, and the Allum is good for the Gums. Also at times let the mouth be washed with the Tincture of Myrrh, in a warm water or Aquebusade and water. This fastened two of Lady Augusta Cosby’s Teeth, when She fell down and loosened three of her Teeth, One did come out but two of them were saved. Lady Cosby To make Conserve of Roses Pluck the Leaves from the footstalks, the Newblown Petals from the Cup, cutting off the [illegible], Beat the Leaves first by themselves, in a marble mortar, with 63 a Wooden Pestle. After they are well beat, add three times their weight of double refined Sugar, untill they are well mixed. Mr [E???] Apothecary. Conserve of Roses Boiled. Take red Roses (Damask are the best.) take off all the white at the bottom of the Leaves, or elsewhere, take three times the weight of them in refined Sugar, put to a Pint of Roses, a Pint of water, cover them and boil the Leaves tender, and when they are so, put in your Sugar, keep them stirring, lest they burn, when they are tender, and the Syrup consumed, put them up and keep them for use. Mrs. Jones. To make Camphor Julep. One Drachm of Camphor dissolved in a little Spirits of Wine (only a few Drops) or Spirits of Lavender, then Pour it into a Pint Bason, and fill it up with boiling water, and cover it close, Let it stand till it is quite cold, and if you take it, add a Tea Spoonfull of the Essence of Peppermint, Strain it off into a Pint Bottle and keep it for use. An Infallible Cure for the hooping Cough Dissolve a Scruple of the Salt of Tartar, in a Gill of water, Add ten Grains of Cochineal, finely powdered, Sweeten it with fine Sugar, give to an Infant the 64 the fourth part of a Table Spoonfull four times a Day, to a Child two or three years old half a Spoonfull, and from four years and upwards a Spoonfull may be taken. The Relief is immediate and the Cure in five or six Days. Finis.
