At length these [sassed?] by one old squaw who demanded to know the complaint. After being informed, she wept for the ignorance of the borned physician, and taking him by the hand, shewed him the low running blackberry or dewberry of the root of which she made a strong decoction, or tea, and caused the patients to drink three tea cups full milk, warm, and during the operation to drink plentifully of water (it operates in this complaint as a gentle purge) all who drank of it recovered," - Give "me to drink of it also I pray you may Brother said I. In haste it was prepared, and in those hours after taking of it the nature of the complaint was entirely changed. and I recovered after a few days to the astonishment of all the neighbourhood who were in hourly expectation of my death - Some time after residing in Charlestown South Carolina a Methodist Minister called on me and informed me with tears in his eyes that his little daughter lay very sick with the dissentery, and the more Physick she took, the worse she seemed to get; and he likewise added that he had buried a little daughter of the same age and with the same complaint some years part. I prescribed a tea cup full of the strong decoction of the root of the low blackberry the effect was similar to that taken by myself; she recovered in a short time to the great day of her worthy parents - I resided afterwards in New England and took a fancy to a charming little boy of one of my Indigent neighbours, who indulged me, 95 with the company of the child frequently at my house for days and weeks together, and having at one period missed him for a week, it led me particularly to enquire for him, when I was informed that he was buried that morning with one of his sisters, and that the third and only surviving child lay almost expiring with the same complaint the dissentery - I flew to the house of sorrow and death in order to save one child if possible, when to my surprise I found my favourite boy still living, although very sick - his two little sisters had been buried that morning. I demanded of the mother who their physician was, and whether he pursued the same course of medicine with this child as with the two others who had died; she answered that he did to her certain knowledge, Does your child grow worse, or better; It grows worse, and worse the same or the other children did replied the mother. Why then in the Name of common sense does he not try some other means; - I then demanded the situation of the two children previous to their death, and was told that they swelled very much even to the appearance of almost bursting. I then observed my little favourite more attending when I discovered his hands, and feet, were very much swelled, shew me the medicine said I, almost frantic with grief and fear. When behold it was Calomel, I concealed my feelings from [crossed out] the mother but privately threw the calomel into the fire for fear she would administer it during the time that I was gone in search of a Physician. Take hard soap and mix the powdered salt with so much of the soap, that it will make a solve, if the soap has but little turpentine in it, as may be known by the smell, then add a little turpentine, but if the soap smells pretty strong of the turpentine, none need be added. Apply the solve when made to the part affected by the felon, and it will in a few hours (and sometimes in a few minutes) totally destroy the [crossed out] felon and remove all pain. - If the felon has supperated or has got matter in it. after the pain is removed it must be healed as other sore are - The above receipt was given by Deacon Ichabod Carmiele Lumberland. He is a man of known vivacity and truth, he asserts that for twenty years part, he has made use of the foregoing solve, and in many cases where the felon had arisen to an alarming and dangerous state, and has never failed of an effectual cure. It was the special desire of Deacon Carmiele that the foregoing receipt should be made public. I have already had occasion to mention the capsicum among the local remedies employed in the Cynanche Maligna, but it would appear from a variety of observations, that it is more successful when used internally. It has been given in very considerable doses, and in some epidemics seems to have succeeded better than the bark. There has not however been a sufficient number of tryals to ascertain the cases to which it [crossed out] is best adapted. Mr. Steward was one of the first who prescribed the capsicum internally in the cynanche Maligna. He directs two table 80 101 Spoonfuls of the small red pepper, or three of the common Cayenne pepper, and two tea spoonfuls of fine salt, to be beat into a paste, on which half a pint of boiling water is poured, and strained off when cold; an equal quantity of very sharp vinegar being added to this infusion, a tablespoonful of the mixture every half hour is a proper dose for an adult; and to this, we are informed, cases yielded which has resisted the bark and Wine. A pound of sulphuric aether is put into a bottle capable of containing about 4 ℔s of any common liquid. On this aether then are poured 2. ℔. of pure water, the bottle is then to be well shaken in order to mix them. On discontinuing the agitation, the aether swims upper most: the water must then be carefully let off in a vessel below. This operation must be repeated 2 or 3 times with new quantities of water, until the aether is reduced to about 5 oz. It is this purified remainder, which is the most perfect solvent of the elastic gum, which must be thrown into it cut into small pieces. The aether acts upon the gum slowly at first, but at the end of 5 or 6 hours or later, the liquor is saturated and remains transparent. If there be a surplus of gum it falls to the bottom, and on being removed from the bottle may be maulded into any form & will preserve its elasticity 126 Use of the gum now dissolved. Med. Hist. MS B 117  161 74 Treatment of Cholera in Turkey. The American missionaries in Constantinople have been successfully employed in treating cases of cholera and cholerine, during the progress of that fearful epidemic in that city. Of some four hundred cases under their care, the mortality dud bit exceed five per cent, of the whole number, and it is remarked that most of them were treated under very unfavorable circumstances, in the almost inconceivably filthy and crowded rooms of the Khans, and in several cases the patient was almost in a dying state when first seen. The general course of treatment adopted has been as follows: In the first stages of the disease, before the collapsed state, it has been their sole object is to control the purging and vomiting. In every case where these symptoms have been overcome, recovery has followed. The application of strong mustard plasters to the abdomen has never been neglected in any case, and where the disease has made much progress, the mustard has been mixed with vinegar instead of water. To check the diarrhœa, the Rev. Dr. Hamlin's cholera mixture has been used, viz: a mixture of equal parts of laudanum, tincture of rhubarb and spirits of camphor. The initial dose is 30 drops for an adult, but in case of real cholera the first dose may be 60 drops, to be increased, say 10 drops, after each discharge, up to 100 or even 125 drops, and to be continued in small and decreasing doses every three or four hours for twenty-four hours after the cessation of the discharges. It is to be remembered that no danger exists from the medicine until it controls the discharge. In cases of vomiting, they have used a mixture given to Dr. Hamlin by a physician of great experience in the treatment of cholera, consisting of equal parts of laudanum, tincture of capsicum, tincture of ginger, and tincture of cardamom seeds. Initial doses 30 to 40 drops, but in severe and obstinate cases of vomiting, a teaspoonful may be given mixed with two teaspoonfuls of brandy and a little water. This mixture is also useful in certain cases of diarrhea, and may be given in the same dose as the first mixture. In certain cases, where these mixtures have failed to stop the evacuations, they have been exchanged for prepared chalk (creta preparata,) say 15 to 20 grains of chalk with 10 drops of laudanum, and 10 drops spirits of camphor, administered after each evacuation, and continued once in four hours of 24 hours after the cessation of the discharges. In other cases injections of one-third of a tea-cup of cooked starch (cool) with 40 to 50 drops of laudanum repeated after each evacuation, have proved more efficacious than anything else, and they should be tried in every severe case. In the collapse state there is always coldness of the extremities, often with severe cramps, sinking of the eyes, shriveling, and often discoloration of the face, with a general sinking of the whole system. For persons found in this state there is much less hope. In these cases every effort must be made to keep up the circulation of the blood, with mustard plasters on the abdomen, feet, calves of the legs and back of the neck. Baths of hot water, or hot brick should surround the patient, and brandy has been used in frequent cases as a stimulent with good effect. Ammonia ointment has been used on the spine, in the collapsed state, with the best effect. When the typhoid symptoms follow the subsidence of an attach of cholera, it has been found that in almost every case, with a rice-water diet, and the free use of camomile tea, these symptoms would disappear of themselves in from one to five days. Small doses of sweet spirits of nitre may, however be given, and in some cases small doses of calomel and opium have been found necessary to the restoration of health. When the patient is very weak, quinine or gentium may be given. Intense thirst is common in cholera cases For this gum arabic water and camomile tea may be given in small quantities, but the drinking of water should be carefully prevented. Great care should be taken of the diet during and after an attack of cholera. On the first day nothing should be eaten. Afterward, rice-water, arrow-root cooked with water, camomile tea, and such things, should be chosen. The above method of treatment is not presented as a substitute for the aid of good physicians, who should always be called at once when they can be found, but simply as a guide to those who may be compelled by circumstances to act by themselves. By the timely use of powerful medicines, cholera may be prevented in ninety-eight cases out of a hundred, where instant attention is given to the first signs of diarrhea. Dr. John Brenan, of Liverpool, has discovered that the oil of turpentine is an infallible specific for child-bed fevers. Yellow Fever. - One of the most important questions for the public health, is to ascertain whether the yellow fever be or be not contagious. A very interesting fact has recently been mentioned on this subject in a memoir presented to the Academy of Sciences, by M. Costa. In the presence of that learned assembly, M. Costa, who is of opinion, supported by Messrs. Lassis and Lasserre, that the yellow fever is not contagious, has made a proposition which proves how strongly he is convinced of the truth of the cause he sustains. He desired, 1st, that the Minister for the Interior should give orders to have brought from the Antilles, where the yellow fever generally rages, clothes belonging to the persons who may have fallen victims to that disease; 2d. that these clothes should be deposited in jars, hermetically sealed and sent to Marseilles, or some other part; and lastly, that individuals in perfect health should clothe themselves in these habiliments, and wear them for forty days, under the most strict superintendence of a commission, composed of those physicians who may be most convinced of the doctrine of contagion. Well aware of the difficulty of finding men disposed to go through this experiment, and desirous to show his agreement in the opinion of Doct. Lassis, he proposes himself, along with Dr. Lasserre, to be the objects of the experiment. Journal des Debats. ANATOMICAL PHENOMENA. The body of a gentleman, who died in Louisville, Kentucky, a few days since, was opened by some members of the faculty, for inspection; from which the following remarkable visceral transposition was discovered: The heart was found in the right cavity of the breast, with the situation of its auricles and ventricles reversed, and the aorta, or great artery, arching towards the right instead of the left side, descending the spine in the usual course of the vena cava, which last, were situated where the aorta should have been. The great lobe of the liver occupied the left hypochondriac region, with the small lobe extending a little to the right. The spleen was found in the right side, where the liver should have been situated. The stomach was reversed with regard to its position, having the larger curvature on the right, the small curvature and the pyloric orifice on the left. The intestines were likewise changed in their order of arrangement, the duodenum commencing and lying principally on the left side, and the segmoid flexure of the colon on the right. This is examination was extended far enough, to satisfy those present, that this anomaly was a lusus natura of the remoest embryotic origin, and could not possibly have resulted from disease, at any period of his lide. This gentleman died in his thirtieth year, and is said to have been remarkably healthy and athletic until within two or three years past, during which time, he had suffered much from disarrangement of the liver and spleen, probably produced by his removal from a northern to a southern climate, of which disease he ultimately died. Cure for the Asthma - A gentleman of this city, travelling a short time since in Europe, for the benefit of his health, obtained from a celebrated Physician in Ireland, the following receipt for the cure of the Asthma, with which he was afflicted Having been himself effectually cured by it, he has since recommended it to others, who have experienced great relief from the same; and it is now published for the benefit of those suffering under tha tdistressing malady. First - Take of Powdered Hippo, 20 grains; Prepared Calomel, 20 grains; Dried Squills, 20 grains; Soap, 16 grams; Syrup of any kind, as much as will give the above articles a proper consistency. Then divide the mass into 24 pills. Take one pill every night. Second - Take of Powdered Columbo, 2 drachms; Powdered Ginger, 2 drachms; Chamomile Flowers, 1 ounce. Pour boiling water on the above ingredients, one pint and a half in quantity. Take 2 ounces, or 4 table spoons full of the cold infusion in the morning and at mid-day. CONCORD, (N.H.) Dec. 23. Extraordinary cure of Hydrophobia. It having been noticed in the papers that [illegible] dogs have appeared late in many places, [perhap?] the following case which we have from the [illegible] of Obediah Mooney, Esp. of Canterbury, may be interesting to the public. On the 13th of February, 1816, Solomon Moon aged 9 years, son of O Mooney, was attacked by a furious dog, when returning from school - his face lacerated and torn, and his fingers bitten by the poisonous teeth of the animal. The anxiety of Mr. M. having ascertained that the dog was mad, can be better felt than described, he consulted a number of physicians, but could obtain no encouragment of relief, until the eleventh day, when the child becoming evidently influenced by the disorder - [his?] eyes wild and staring, and his intellect deranged - Dr. Sanborn, of Sanbornton, was sent for, who immediately ordered a decoction of lobelia, by [illegible] called Indian tobacco, and by others scall cup when a quantity was given to the child, on whose [illegible] soon had a powerful effect; and, on repeating the dose, and bathing the wound frequently, the child was perfectly recovered. A small quantity of this decoction will make a well person vomit. The poison had so far influenced the system of the child, that at the first time, it was able to [illegible] low about three gills before it operated: - at subsequent trials, the child took less, as he grew better - It is important that regard be had to the quantity given, according to the situation of the patient - The herb used is very common in our fields, and is known by the effect it has on horses, making them discharge saliva from the mouth: it is by many persons used as an emetic. Show, of Providence, Rhode Island. recently submited a report to the Board of Alde man of that city in relation to quarantine regulations and the causes of cholera, in which he advances the assertion that "there is no principle more certainly established in the winds of all intelligent observers of the disease, than that quarantine regulations are absolutely and utterly useless to present the introduction and spread of Asiatic cholera. The cholera cannot prevail as an epidemic without the presence of a certain and mysterious condition of the atmosphere. Of this atmospheric condition little is known: but it is known that its presence or absence is not effected or regulated in the slightest possible degree by quarantine measures. Vessels may have the cholera on board, and may land the sick on our shores, but the disease will never become epidemic, nor spread among the people, until that mysterious atmospheric condition is present. But the atmospheric cause may come and be present, and the disease may spread epidemically, without any connection with the arrival of vessels from ports where the disease exists. If not a single vessel should arrive in our ports during the next five years it would not make a single [day?] difference in the presence or absence of the cholera as an epidemic. ** The doctrine stated so positively in the document from the United States Legation at Constantinople, that cholera is contagious, is equally opposed to the opinions of physicians and others who have seen the disease, and is calculated to work most serious injury, if fully believed, in any community where the disease exists. If the cholera was actually contagious, in the ordinary acceptation of the term, a panic would exist, and it would be difficult to obtain nurses, or medical attendance for the sick. But no intelligent medical observer of the disease in this country, at the present day, believes that the cholera is contagious. Dr. Snow adds: The causes of cholera are, first, the mysterious atmospheric condition of which we have spoken: second, local conditions of filth and impure air. The disease cannot prevail without the combined presence of these two causes. The first cause is beyond human control; it moves in obedience to the laws of which we know nothing; it crosses continent 8 and oceans as freely as the winds of heaven, and it would be as reasonable to attempt to control the movements of the east wind, as to attempt to control the movements of this cause of cholera by quarantine restriction. But the second cause of cholera, and without which the first would be comparatively powerless for evil, is, to a very great extent, within control, and here is where our duty lies." Are the citizens of Quincy, or the authorities thereof. duly appreciative of the face that filth breeds disease, and the death lurks about the impurities that abound throughout the gutters, alleys, and backyards of the city? If they are not, it is high time they began to give the matter some attention. An inspection of most of the localities specified will satisfy any reasonable person that unless some measures are speedily adopted for the thorough renovation of our city in this respect, we may rightfully anticipate a heavy reduction of population, during the coming year, by reason of cholera of the most malignant their exertions. Cholorine Gas. The following is said to be one of the most powerful and efficacious disinfectants known; it was used successfully throughout Great Britain and Scotland some years ago when cholera was go prevalent and fatal there. We advise our readers to cut it out and preserve it: - One pert black oxide of magnese, three parts common salt, and pour over a little common vitro. This makes the gas - a light colored smoke. Do not inhale it but place it on a table in the hall of the house; the fumes will get up stairs and purify the whole building. A pound will purify the house for a month. It is also a good preventative of typus fever, even in the worst localities. It is said cholera never came where this was used. 163 What will Cure the Cholera! From the London Weekly Dispatch, Oct. 15. Dr. Worms, head physician to the military hospital of the Gros Gaillo, in Paris, some days back, read a paper to the academy of medicine offering what would appear to be very nearly a specific in cholera cases. In July 1849, Dr. Worms gave the results of his experience in a letter to the Gazette Medicale. After describing the failure of other remedies, he had secourse to the administration, in the cure of patients already psostrated, but not in the last stage, of "mineral lemonade," suppressing all other medicament. This lemonade is a preparation of two, three, or at most, four grammes of concentrated sulphuric acid, with 1,000 grammes of common water, and 150 of simple syrup. At the time, he was unable through the abatement of the disease, to test his remedy upon patients in its worst stages. But in three more secent visitations he was enable to extend his experience, and it is summoned in the assertion, "Recently he has witnessed the infalibility of this simple treatment, and he desires to see it generalized." In confirmed cholera, the patient is left in the most complete repose. He is shampooned only in case of cramps. He takes a glass of the lemonade from five to ten grammes of acid per litre every half hour; he may do this immediately after vomiting, which is intended to be prompted while diarrhœa is stopped, the vomiting being a sign of amendment. White wines, champagne, ice, may be freely used, but not beer, brandy or akaline mineral waters. Within our own circle we receive testimony corroborating the principle of this remedy. An practitioner has resorted to lemon and salt for the last 20 years or more with essential success. Late intelligence of a serious outbreak of cholera at Epping, fatal in five instances, bids us be on the watch. - Nothing more need to be said on the value of pure air and cleanliness. But medical science has hitherto been at fault. Every organ of publicity should, therefore, put before its readers whatever may appear to offer a hope of better success that those educated to the healing art, may in no instance miss a suggestion that may prove fruitful. 162
