APPENDIX TO THE LAWS OF THE MEDICAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH. EDINBURGH: 1799- APPENDIX. CHAPTER I. Law 1st. For 7 o'clock, read 5 minutes after 7 o’clock. Law 2d. The following is added: Each member is at liberty to go away at 12 o’clock, without incurring a fine, after having written down his name on a paper, signed by the President in the Chair, and placed in the Committee Room for that purpose. Law 7th. Leave of absence shall not be granted except under the conditions specified in Law 6th. CHAPTER III. For the words, “ A petition for a seat in the Society shall be admitted If there be not one negative in every eight votes,”--Read, Every petition for a seat in the Socie- ty, presented and attested according to law, shall be ad- mitted, provided a majority of the members voting upon such petition concur in its admission. CHAPTER 4 APPENDIX TO THE LAWS CHAPTER IV. Law 1st. For the words, “but the following recommen- dation, &c"—Read, But the following recommendation shall be affixed to every such petition, when it is presented, signed by at least three ordinary members: We the under- written attest, upon our honour, that, from our personal knowledge of the petitioner, we believe him to be a proper person to become a member of this Society. Law 2d. To be added,—-When there are two or more petitions to be balloted for, the report of the decision of the Society shall be suspended till the whole are ballotted for. Law 8th. To be added,—-Each member shall pay his subscription of 10s, 6d., notwithstanding the specification in Law 2d. Chap. 5th. CHAPTER VII. For the words, "I declare,” &c.—-Read, I declare, upon my honour, that, in voting for the four gentlemen whose names are in this list, I am bound by no promise, nor in- fluenced by any motive or consideration, except the con- viction that these four are the best qualified to fill the of- fice of Presidients. CHAPTER OF THE MEDICAL SOCIETY.5 CHAPTER IX. Law 21st, The following is added,-—If any member take out a greater number of books than that allowed by law, the Librarian shall mark that member fined 2S 6d.; and by doing so he himself shall be freed from any charge of neglect of duty in giving out a greater number of books than the law permits. CHAPTER X. Law 2d is repealed, and the following substituted for it,-—Each ordinary and extraordinary member shall have the liberty to propose three extraordinary visitors during the Session without any restriction resepcting their resi- dence in Edinburgh. Law 3rd Is repealed. Law 5th Is repealed, and the following is substituted: The same person shall not be appointed a visitor more than twice in the same Session. Law 6th Is repealed. The following law is inserted at the end of this Chap- ter: At the commencement of every Session, the Secretary shall write, in alphabetical order, the names of all the or- dinary members, and all the extraordinary members whose names are on the list of circulation in a book allotted for the 6 APPENDIX TO THE LAWS that purpose, in which the President, on the appointment of any visitor, shall write his name, with the day and month of such appointment, opposite the name of the member who proposed him. CHAPTER XII. At the end of this Chapter the following new law is in- serted: If any member present to the Society an Essay for dis- cussion, written upon a subject not allotted or granted him according to the several laws contained in Chapter 11th, he shall incur the penalty of 10s. 6d. CHAPTER XIV. LAW l0th. To this law the following is added:-—No member shall lend a book, or books, to any person not a member of the Society, under the penalty of 10s. 6d. At the end of this Chapter the following new law is in- serted:-—Any part of the apparatus that has remained three weeks in possession of a member, shall be returned at the request of another member. If such member neglect to return the apparatus within three days, after the request in OF THE MEDICAL SOCIETY. 7 in writing has been presented, he shall incur the penalty of one shilling each day it may be detained. CHAPTER XV. LAW 1st, In this law the following alteration is made: --The election of the Library Committee is to take place on the first meeting after that on which the Annual Presi- dents have been elected; and the former Presidents are to continue members of the Committee until the new one is formed. LAW 10th. For the words, “On the first ordinary meetings of January and April,”—-Read, The third ordinary meetings of December and April. LAW 13th, For the words, "A quarter past six,”-- Read, Twenty minutes past six. Law 20th. For the words, “The Committee shall meet on the first and third Saturdays of every month throughout the year at one o’clock,’’—Read, The Com- mittee Shall meet at half past three o’clock, on the first and third Mondays of the month. LAW 27th. For, “a quarter before seven o’clock,”-- Read, 10 minutes before seven o’clock. LAW 30th, To this law the following is added; Any member who neglects the payment of his fines, as directed in Law 30. Chap. 15. shall forfeit his privileges as a mem- ber, and the first fine of 2s.6d. shall be doubled on each successive ordinary meeting of the Society until the whole sum 8 APXENDIX MO THE LAWS, &c. sum is paid. In such case of neglect, the Secretary shall officially acquaint the member that his fines are accumu- lating according to law. CHAPTER XIX. Law 2d. To be added, When any motion is rejected by no more than two thirds of the Society, the mover shall not be subject to this fine.
