GRANA ANGELICA OR, The True SCOTS PILLS, (left to Posterity by Dr. Patrick Anderson of Edinburgh, Physician to his Majesty King Charles the First, and constantly used as his ordinary Physick by King Charles the Second) Are faithfully Prepared ONLY by JAMES INGLISH (Son of David Inglish, deceased, and Grandson of I. INGLISH of Edinburg) Living at the Unicorn, N° 165, over-against the New Church in the Strand, LONDON, By His MAJESTY’S Authority. AMONG the most eminent Physicians of the last Age, the famous Dr. ANDERSON is most deservedly to be esteemed; for he spared no Travel nor Study that might enable him to be serviceable to the Diseased of his Country; as appears by a Latin Treatise which the Doctor writ, at Edinburgh, after he returned from his Travels, in the Year 1635; and in which the following Particulars of Diseases, the Way of taking the Pills, with the Manner of their Operating, are related. This Treatise, with the Receipt of the Pills, my Grandmother was possessed of immediately after the Death Mrs. Katharine Anderson, the Doctor’s only Daughter, whom she succeeded, and has been in my Family ever since: And this Treatise I am willing to shew to any Gentleman who is desirous to see it. The Doctor was apprehensive of Counterfeits in his Life-time, by his giving the following Caution in the said Treatise, viz. Admonitum hic te volo (Lector or Benigne) Grana hæc sideliter nos divisuros in Urbe nostra Edinburgensi. At- que hoc dictum volo, ne quis ab aliis fallatur, qui privati sui quæstus gratia Commentitia hæc sub nomine meo divulgarint; which is, I advise thee (courteous Reader) that these Pills are faithfully prepared by me in Edinburgh; and this Caution I give, left any should be deceived by covetous People, who, for their own Lucre Sake, would pretend to vend their Counterfeits under my Name. And in the next Paragraph, the Doctor, speaking of the Pills, has these Words, viz. Præterea per decennium et ultra conservari posse; which is, Moreover they will keep Ten Years and upwards. As great Numbers of ignorant covetous People counterfeit this Medicine, I thought fit to insert this Proof, to put it out of all Doubt of my having the only true Receipt of Dr. Anderson's Scots Pills by lineal Succession. Nothing can be a greater Proof of the Excellency of the Medicine, than its being taken by many Gentlemen of the Faculty. The late celebrated Physician Sir Edward Hulse, Bart. took it often; and was pleased to give Mr. Inglish a Certificate wrote by his own Hand, strongly recommending it as an excellent Family Medicine, as prepared by the sole Proprietor James Inglish, which Certificate he is willing to shew to any Gentleman or Lady that is desirous of seeing it. For Diseases of the Stomach I. They exceedingly comfort and strengthen the Stomach; they restore the lost Appetite; they purge Choler and Melancholy, but chiefly Phlegm, and waterish Matter; they cleanse the same of all putrid, gross, and thick Humours; they comfort the Entrails, open Obstructions, and disperse all the Pains of those Parts. For Diseases of the Head. II. They strengthen the Head, and all the Senses, but chiefly those of Hearing and Sight, whose Weakness and Pain they remove. They cure Giddiness and Me- grim: And, as they comfort and purge the Stomach, so they do the like both to Head and Heart; and have this excellent Faculty, that bring mixed with other Physick, they correct its Malignity, and make it unhurtful to the Stomach; and are therefore to be preferred to all other gentle and easy Medicines. For Diseases of the Belly, &c. III. They are wonderfully helpful to all Diseases of the Womb and other Maladies belonging to Women, that proceed from Coldness, by Chance, or Constitution; for they safely and easily purge and empty the Belly, without Pain or Gripings, and carry out by their proper Passages, all those vicious Humours, and other Dregs, that are stopped in a Woman after Delivery. They are also of great Use against Barrenness that proceeds from Uncleanness of the Womb, and cleanse Women from their White Flux, and so fit and enable them for Conception. They may be also taken by Women with Child, for the gentle Easeing of their Bellies, without any Hazard of miscarrying at all; One every Night after Supper. Against Worms, in the Intestines. IV. They kill all Worms that are bred in the Bellies of Children, of big-bellied Women that are costive, and of Men; nor can any body that frequently uses these Pills, breed any Worms at all. For Costiveness of Women with Caild. V. And if in Women with Child the Belly be bound (which often happens) you must have a special Care, that in Time of her Labour, the great Guts, being extended with Excrements, do not augment her Pains in Travail: To avoid which, it is my Advice, that, in such Cases, you have always ready some of these Pills; especially seeing neither Clysters nor Suppositories are so convenient, because they trouble and irritate these lower Places about the Womb, which may cause Abortion: These Pills, even in the Time of Delivery (as has been observed by many) taken in a Glass of Wine and Water, have afforded great Help without any Danger. For the Pain of Head by Vapours from Stomach VI. They gently purge, and throw out by Stool, all Choler that is seated in the Stomach and Entrails; therefore they are to be given to those who are afflicted with the Head-ach, by reason of the noisome Vapours that continually ascend thereto from the Stomach. And for the same Reason, they are to be given to those that are For Bleared Eyes, Thirstiness, and Paleness. Blear-eyed, and to those who by Redundance of Choler are continually thirsty, and have their Mouth and Tongue always dry, and find a Heat and Loathing, with an Overturning in their Stomachs: They are, moreover, to be given to those that are unnaturally pale, and who have Need to be cleared of superfluous Humours of the Body. For the Stone, Scurvy, Cholick, Dropsy, Green Sickness, and Palsey. VII. They likewise prevent many Diseases, and the Corruption of the Food; and wonderfully defend the Body against Surfeits in Eating and Drinking, which most frequently after Sleep) beget corrupt and crude Humours; and so are a Sovereign Help in case of the Stone, Gravel, Scurvy, Cholick, Dropsy, Green-Sickness, and Palsy, One every Night. In Dropsical and Feverish Habits they often operate by Urine and Sweat. Against Catarrhs, Rheumatisms, Gout, and Desluxions in the Joints. VIII. If the Head, subjest to Defluxions, is affected by a watery and fuming Stomach, which threatens the joints with a Deluge, these Pills will stop their Course; and we are assured, by that famous Physician, that they who use these Pills frequently, will be free from the Gout, and all other Diseases of the Joints, as also from inward and outward Rheumatisms, which occasion tormenting Pains. For by these Pills the daily Crudities and Superfluities of the Meat being carried into the Sink of the Belly, they cannot harm the Joints at all, nor create Diseases which (otherwise) could not be avoided; whilst the more noble Parts, being oppressed therewith, would not be able, for their own Preservation, to discharge them into the baser Parts of the Body. Useful at Sea. IX. They are also singularly useful to all Sea-faring Persons, especially in long Voyages; wherein (by frequent Experience) it hath appeared, that such as have taken 1, 2, or 3 of the Pills at Night, have not only been kept from Costiveness (which is the Cause of most Diseases at Sea) but have likewise been preserved from Scurvies, Pestilential Fevers, and several other Malignant Distempers, so frequent in Foreign Countries; into which others, at the same Time (either not having or neglecting the Use of these Pills) have fallen. The Manner of taking them. X. You may use them at your Pleasure, whether late or early, or any Hour of the Day, before Meat, or after Meat; but being taken after Supper, they defend the Head (as before observed) from those Vapours and Fumes that ascend to it in the Night. They may be taken at any Time, without Confinement, or Hindrance of Business. The Dose is from Two to Four, according as the Constitution is. Some Persons of weak Constitutions that are easy to purge, need take but One going to Bed at Night, and that Three or Four Times a Month, or Week, as Necessity, or the Temper of the Body shall require. They do not give many Stools, neither do they work violently nor suddenly: They begin to purge about Twelve Hours after they are taken; sometimes in shorter or longer Time, according to the Dis- position of the Stomach and Body. And they may be taken without any special Care of Rules in Diet, whether in Summer or Winter, in Frost or warm Weather, without any Inconveniency ensuing thereupon. The above are the Doctor’s own Words taken from his Latin Treatise, and have been verified by the Experience of more than 100 Years. For Children and old Men. XI. They are so easy and innocent in Operation, that they may be given to Children, and decrepid old Men, and that most safely. And delicate Persons who are not much used to Labour, and others who cannot away with other Purgatives, may easily swallow down these. They are Securities from most Diseases, have a friendly Effect on the noblest Entrails of the Body, and are so wholesome and of so general Use, and so much known and approved in these Nations, that none (who have once tried the same, and found the good Effects thereof) will willingly want them, when they stand in Need of Physick, but will be careful to for all sudden Accidents; which, if suffered through the Neglect of these Pills to take Rooting, will not afterwards be easily removed. In a Word, he to live a long Life and healthful, if (every Night) he takes One of these Pills after Supper, will soon find the Benefit of them. The Seal on the Boxes is thus described, viz. A Field Azure, a Lion Rampant, Three Mullets Argent: The Crest Dr. Anderson's Head, betwixt II. with his Name round it, and Isabella Inglish underneath the Shield in a Scroll, according to the Impression in the Margin, with which the Boxes are sealed on the Top with black Wax.
