When interejl and prejudice influence men to condemn innovations before they have opportunity to decide on their merits by experiments, or other rational means for informa- tion, it is prefumed, thatfuch opinions, and the exertions of fuch perfons to ridicule and to difcoiintenance 'whatever may concern the happinefs of the human race, willbejujlly efi- mated. From an extenfive practice; and from a variety of expe- riments, I cheerfully hazard my honor and reputation, on the ultimate fuccefs of my Metallic Points. That they are a chatholican has never been pretended. Many caufes operate to prevent their ufual effects even in thofe com- plaints, in 'which they generally fucceed; and 'whenever ope- rations are performed, as is fometimes the cafe, by perfons totally ignorant as- to the mode of tifing them, they muf fail of giving relief. Dear Sir, T SHOULD have written youlaft week, had I then been -*- able to afcertain certain fafts, the rumour of which I had heard. A Mrs. Beers, a near neighbor to me, the wife of Eber Beers, and daughter of capt. Samuel Hug- gins, of this town, had been, for fourteen weeks, exceed- ingly diftreffed with the rhejimatifm, to fuch a degree, that for fourteen weeks previous to the 29th of laft month, (lie had not been able to walk acrofs her room even with the crutches, fave only once, when flie made out, with the affiftanceof crutches, to hobble part of the way acrofs her room.—On the 29th of September laft,.flie procured a fet of your Metallic Subftances, and in lefs than an hour after (he'bad begun to ufe them, in the manner directed by you, (lie rofe from her chair, and walked about the houfe, and on the next day (he went abroad to her neighbors, having thrown aficle her crutches. I have this day paid her a vifit, in company with her father, and Timothy Jones, Efq. who lives in the (Ireet where (he refides, and dire&ly op- polite to her refidence, ancl with captain Abel Burrett, who is her next neighbor, and lives within eight yards of her door. I requefted her to relate her cafe over in their prefence, which (he did, and thefe gentlemen all, with one voice, fupported from their own knowledge, her ftory. It is a duty which you owe youfelf and the world to pro- mulge this evei«it. I am very refpeclfully, Your molt obedient fervant, PIERPONT EDWARDS, N. B. She fays her fever has left her, her appetite has returned, and (he is in a fairway to be reftored to perfect health. a / 11 Q .A. ( 4 ) JAMES GLOVER, Efq. Norwich, County of Tioga, State of New-York, Sept. 19, 1796. Sir, HAVING lately purchafed afet of your patent In'ftru* ments to keep in my family, I have ufed them with great fuccefs on a perfon fcalded with boiling lie : a man by the name of Welch, who was at work in. my pot-afh, •when boiling down the lie, fome of it flew into one of his eyes, which foon became very much inflamed, and fwelled to fuch a degree, that he could not open it, and remained! in that fituation, for the fpace of three days, when after a few minutes operating with your patent Inflrumcnts, he was able to open it, and, with two operations only, his eye was almoft entirely free from pain aud inflammation, and in a fliort time was perfeftly well, although fo badly fcal- ded, he had almoft defpaired of its ever recovering. JAMES GLOVER. Mr. SAMUEL SATTERLEE. }V Mi am ft own, Nov. 3, 1796. Sir, I WAS called on in the evening, by a gentleman with a cancer on his lips, which caufed a fevere inflammation in every part of his face; I furniflied him with a fet ot your Metallic Inftruments, until the morning following, when he returned fo enraptured with their effe&s, that he readily purchafed a fet. I am, &c. SAMUEL SATTERLEE, 3^r. JOHN PUNCHARD. Salem, Otto. 19, 1756. Sir. I HAVE operated repeatedly with your Metallic Points, and have fucceeded in remo.viug rheumatic pains, ( 5 ) agues, pains in the head, face, fide and burns to my aftonifh- ment. and to the aftonifliment of all prefent. I cured a man burnt with powder, in lefs than half an hour, with the Points, without any other application. JOHN PUNCHARD. BEZALEEL WOODWARD, Efq. Profeflbrof Ph*. lofophy and Mathematics, Dartmouth College. Hanover, Neiv-Hampjhire, Sept. 19, 1796. Sir, I HAVE made nfe of your pointed Metallic Inftruments in various: diforders, and belides univerfally abating and generally removing pains in the head, face, teeth, &c. by application of them, I have found them ufeful in the fait rheum. — 'Inly one opportunity has prefented for an effectual trial—that has cured the patient by three appli- cations, which being noifed abroad, fundry perfons affec- ted with that diforder, have been at my houfe this week, to have the operation performed on them; and the difor- der has abated on the firft application, fo that the prefent profpeftis, that cures will be effe&ed for them, byfurther life of the Inftruments. A violent pain proceeding from a ftrain in the foot, has, by a few minutes application of the Inftruments, been removed foas not to return. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your moft obedient and humble fervant^ BEZALEEL WOODWARD. Gen. ELIHU MARVIN* Member of the Cosset* ticut Medical Society. Norwich, Dee. 20, 1796. Sir, SINCE I have been in the nfe of your patent Metallic- Points, which is abont four months, I have, by way of experiment, raadeufe of them in eafes of inflammation* of A z C s ) almoft every kind, and in fubje&s, of all ages antf defcrip-- tlons, and as might be expe&ed, with various fuccefs. One faft, however, I am fully convinced of, (in oppofition to former prejudices) viz. That in a variety of circumftan- ces, a proper application of them is capable of operating a change in the human frame, which lean no more doubt, becaufe I cannot affign a fatisfactory philofophical reafon therefor, than I can doubt the operation of opium, be- caufe, the properties of that gum, by which, and the mo- dus operandi, in which it produces fleep, are to me wholly unknown. I am confident, reafoning a priori, would as foon eftablifli one fact as the other. Cafes in which the Points have, in my practice, appeard fuccefsful, are fuch as burns, headachs, agues in the face, ophthalmics, pains in the limbs, breaft, and fides, and in cynanche tonfillaris, yet candor requires I (houldfay, fuccefs in thefe cafes has not been univerfal. One cafe of cynanche tonfillaris, or common inflamma- tory quinfey, I will relate to you ;—I vifited a young man late in the afternoon, found him exercifed with all the ufttal fymptoms of thatdifeafe; fuch as general inflamma- tory diathefis, the tonfils fo tumefied as to be nearly clofed together. His throat and neck externally enlarged, a con- stant difcharge by fpitting a glairy mucus, and complain- ing of exceffive pain in the parts : by his account, thefe fymptoms had been increafing for about three or four days. His mother informed me that he had not fwallow- ed any thing for thirty-fix hours, except three or four fpoonsful of water, in which toafted bread had been foak- ed. I could not learn that any means had been ufed for his relief, except keeping within-doors, and making fome external applications. I applied the Metallic Points ex- ternally in the ufual way; very foon the fpitting fenfibly decreased. After fome time, he obferved the pain was wholly gone on one fide, and much leflened on the other. I then directed him to make trial how he could fwallow ; he took a tumbler of fweetened water, and drank it with little difficulty, and immediately ate about half a pint of dullard. I then left him, with directions to repeat the operations occafionally; and, in the intervals, to keep the throat covered with fome emollient poultice. On vifiting him the next day, I found him fitting at the fire, roafting oyfters, aud eating them without difficulty; he obferved he was well. I made every enquiry, to difcover whe- ther the fwelling had not burft, but could not learn any thing from him which gave the lead reafon to think it bad. I left him a dofe ©f purgative pills, which he fwaU C 7 ) lowed without pain, and in a few days regained his ufual health. One cafe of pain in the fide, occafioned by the patient, while unwell, being expofed to a cold, damp atfmofphere, attended with great interruption of locomotion and dif- ficult refpiration, was completely relieved by a few mi- nutes application of the Points. With every fentiment of efteem, I remain your lincere friend, ELIHU MARVIN. Dr. SAMUEL WILLARD, Member of the Con- necticut Medical Society. Stafford, Auguftb, 1796. SINCE I returned to Stafford, I have made trial with your Metallic Inftruments with very happy fuccefs, in a cafe of acute rheumatifm, which had, for a long time, baffled all the remedies to which I myfelf and two or three other phyficians had advifed. The wart which I burned down when at your houfe, gave me no trouble as to any fenfation of fire, after you operated on the inflamed part; I felt a forenefs for feve- ral days after, but the forenefs was no greater than would have arifen from the deftruction of fo much (kin from any other caufe.—It argues great folly to condemn any in- novations, or new improvements in the arts and fciences, without due invefligation. This is a kind of treatment, however, which you have already experienced, and which you mult expect ftill to experience. I am, &c. SAMUEL WILLARD JOHN VAUGHAN, M. D. State of Delaware. Dear Sir, Chriftiana, July 14, 179°"- I HAVE operated, in a few cafes only, with your inftru- ments, for but few have offered fince I poflelfed them. One cafe of nervous or hyfteric head-ach, perfect- C 8 ) ly cured—a cafe of odontalgia relieved. The third a young man, who had fallen ten or fit teen feet on the edge of an open ended hogfliead, and received a confiderable contu- fion in the umbilical region, with tumefaction. I bled him three times to little purpofe. But after about two minutes operation with the Inftruments, he exclaimed in extafy, " I am well—I am well—my pain is gone." The pain, however, returned in a lefs degree, but in thirty or forty minutes went off entirely, and he went to work as ufual. I am, &c. JOHN VAUGHAN. Rev Dr. MORSE, of Charlefton. December 9, 1796. Dear Sir, 1HAVE made a faithful trial of your patent Metallic Points in a number of cafes—fuch as burns, pains in the head, teeth, face, ears, fide, back and limbs, arifing from colds, and in one or two inftances rfieuniaticpains have been relieved by them ; and in one inftance the pain- ful effects of the fting of a wafp were entirely removed. In fome cafes I have been unfuccefsful, particularly in a burn, where -x- oil had been previoufly applied, and in the tooth-ach, where the teeth were \ very defective. On the whole, I believe the difcovery to be a very ufeful one j I wifhit cordially all imaginable fuccefs. I am, &c. Sir, rpHE fame and utility of your patent inftruments have A become fubjects of fo much notoriety and fpecula- tion, that almoft all pained people are defirous of making trial of them. Their efficacy, within my knowledge, ap- pears to be increafing 1 am more and more confirmed in the benefit of the difcovery, and cannot think but they will continue as long as thepaina of the human body (hall need them. I am, Sec. ,^ WALTER KING. Rev. Dr. ROBBINS, of Plymouth. Sept. 24, 1796. Dear Sir, SEVERAL perfons, fince you left us, have experienced immediate relief, i'l various complaints, by the Metal- lic Points. I operated, day before yefterday, on a man s nand, which was prodigioufly fwelltfd and painful, by a wound he received on the back of it, which he negleaed and got cold in. It was much inflamed ; but was relieved by that fingle operation : The fwelling fubfided, and the inflam- mation went away, fo that he went directly to work on board his veflel. He tcld me the lsft night it gave him no trouble. I am, &c CHANDLER R0BBINS. Rev. Dr. STILLMAN, of Bofton. October 6, 1796. Dear Sir, . FEEL myl'elf much obliged to you for the important fervice you have rendered to Mrs, StiUman s eyes, at- C 10 ) ter a diftrtffingi'iflammsifio'i of eight months. If, through too much exercife, or being expofed to very cold air, a degree of inflammation returns, it is removed in a few minutes again, by the application of jour points. I hew, in my walks among the lick, made ufe of tliem repeatedly \\ itn fuccefs ; and cannot but think they will be of impor- tant benefit to mankind. I am, &c. SAMUEL STILLMAN. Rev. Dr- WILLIAM ROGERS, and Mr. PETER MAROT, of Philadelphia. THIS is to certify, that I, the Subscriber, of thediftrict of Southwark, Philadelphia, was, fome time ago, moft forely afflicted with a violent inflammation in my left eye, fo as to be unable-to work, or to get any reft ; the pain was one night fo very great, that I could not lie in my bed ; my eye was entirely clofed and conftantly run- ning with water, accompanied with a pain in my head— feveral things were applied in order to give me eafe, but all to no purpofe : my wife having heard of your patent Metallic Points, I was prevailed upon in the morning to wait upon the Rev. Dr. Rogers, who has a fet, and re- quefted him to apply them. Dr. Rogers faid, upon open, ing my eye gently with his finger, it was too bad to be re- lieved by the points, as it was entirely of a bloody colour, and all the parts about it were greatly fwelled an A much inflamed ; however, he would try their efficacy. He ope- rated for a few minutes, and I began to open my eye ; he continued operating by fpells for the (pace of ten or fif- teen minutes, and the pain was entirely gone, and I could, without difficulty, open it as eaiily as the other. I return- ed to my family wholly relieved, had an appetite for my food, andnextday wentto my accuftomed labour. A few days after, I had an inflammation in my right eye, atten- ded with very confiderable pain, the points were again ap- plied by Dr. Rogers, and I was almoft inftantly relieved ; from that time to this, I have been, as to my eyes, as well as ever I was in my life. Being called upon to teftify the above, i: is with the ut«. ( « ) moft readinefs I do it, as it is my wifu that fuch an ufeful difcovery as the points, may be univerfally known, and in cafe of necefKty, bereforted to. PETER MAROT. May 2<), 1797. The ftatement given by Mr. Marot, a; to the relief ha obtained in both cafes, is a juft one. Mrs. Marot affured me he returned home, to all appearance, perfectly cured, and that he is always fpeaking of it with real gratitude. I have applied the tractors in fome other inftances with Aiccefs. WILLIAM ROGERS. •Philadelphia, June \, 1797. Rev. Mr. BALCH. Georgetown, Mayid\X\, r797. Dear Sir, A NEIGHBOUR of mine, Mr. James Connor, was forely afflicted with an inflammation in his left eye, and a pain in his head. His eye appeared like a ba'l of blood, and all the contiguous parts were much inflamed, and of a bloody colour—I faw your Metallic Points ap- plied to the afiected part with fuch fuccefs. that, in the (pace of about ten minutes, he declared the pains were gone—he has told me fince, he never felt any inconveni- ence from it afterwards. Several of my neighbours who have been afflicted with pains, have teftifiedin favour of yourtraclors. That you may fucceed in promoting the happinefs of the human race, is the wifh of, Sir, . Your humble;Tervant, STEPHEN B. BALCH. Dr. PERKINS. ( 12 ) Rev. Mr. BRADFORD, of Rowley. December 2, 1796. Dear Sir, ON the 26th of October laft, the wife of a certain Mr. Lane, of Candia, fell from a horfe and hurt the fmall of her back exceedingly. A pbyfician was immedi- ately called to her relief, who bled her, and adminiftered to her fuch medicines as he judged proper. She was in the fifth month of her pregnancy ; her friends, of courfe, were exceedingly alarmed at her misfortune. The phyficians' means proving infufficient for the removal of her pains during feveral hours, I was called upon, by the advice of her phyfician and friends, to apply your Metallic Points to her. When I came to her lodgings, I found her fitting before the fire in the greateft agony, having little or no life of her lower limbs, and not being able without the greateft difficulty, to raife her feet from the floor. By the help of her friends, (he was laid on the bed, but was un- able to turn herfelf by her own ftrength. The Points were applied to the fmall of her back about ten minutes, and in fifteen minutes afterwards fhe turned herfelf in the bed, declaring herfelf free from pain. Soon after this, I propofed a fecond operation, and to leave her for the evening. This being over, fhe arofe from the bed, and walked feveral times acrofs the room, affirming that (lie was as free from pain as ever (lie was in all her life. That night fhe refted well, and without pain, and the next morning by funrife, mounted her horfe and rode thirty miles, fince which, I have heard nothing from her. This, together with a number of ether inftances, con- vinces me of the great and important benefits derived from a judicious application of your Metallic inftruments. That they may have a general fpread through the earth, is the defire of Your's, &c. EBENEZER BRADFORD. CALVIN GODDARD, Efq. Plain field, Sept 25, 1798. Dear Sir, I HAVE 1-iteIy been eye witnefs to one operation with your Metallic Points, which appeared to me a little Angular. A rough, hardy labourer had a very bad Boil upon the outfide of his ancle—His leg was fwollen to the knee, and his foot to the toes; looked as if the (kin was ready to burft. The leg, up to the hip, he faid, was in extreme pain, fo that he was deprived of deep in the night j^-eceding, and the foot was in a high ftate of inflamma- tion—I drew the inftruments repeatedly up and down the leg, without any vifible effect or decreafe of pain, fo long that I was almoft difcouraged—at length, however, the patient pulled off his coat and flung it alide—(it was one of thofe cold nights the beginning of this month.) His leg was, of a fudden, wet with fweat—indeed the fweat burft inftantaneoufly from all his pores ; the inflamma- tion, upon thefurface of the foot, fubfided, and the fuel- ling abated—the man declared himfelf free from pain, went to bed and flept well, and I have heard no further complaint As.I had never known of thisfweating effect, I thought the cafe worth reporting to you. •* 1 am, &c. CALVIN GODDARD. Rev. THOMAS FLEESON. Philadelphia, yihjune, 1797. Dear Sir, HAVING obtained fufficient proof of the efficacy of your Metallic Points, in a variety of cafes, I unite with a number of my brethren in the miniftry, and others, in teltifying that I think it is a valuable difcoverv, and calculated, with a judicious application, and the bleffing trf God, to alleviate the miferies of mankind. I had fre- quently heard of them, but did not pay particular atten- tion to them, until you faw me in the ftreet, when I had a confiderable inflammation in my right eye, and which was of long {landing ; fo fudden, effectual, and perma- nent relief, from fo painful a fenfation, has filled me with aftonifhment. The firft was a young lady, who had run the point of a pair of fciflbrs in her hand ; the fecond was Mr. Ifaac Carli le, w ho had received a wound in the top of his foot, from a rufty nail; the third, awoman who was greatly afflicted with an inflammatory rheumaiifm ; the fourth, a woman who dif- fered with therheumatifm in her arm, for three weeks; all of whom were relieved in about an hour, to the afto- nifhment of a number of witneffes ; befides feveral others who have experienced in a greater, or lefs degree, their beneficial effects. I conceive it my duty, to make this declaration, for the encouragement of my fuftering fellow creatures: And am, With fentiments of refpect, Your's, THOMAS FLEESON. Dr. ELISHA PERKINS. " In a former letter I mentioned the indifpofition of captain Kaltaifen[[the commanding officer of the garrifon] and, as the application by which he has been relieved, is •worthy of notice, I have taken the liberty of repoiting it to you- " For about two years paft, he has been much afflicted withafpafmodic affection on the left fide of his head—but for feveral months, it had become fo very frequent and violent, as to affect his fenfes in a great degree—all the variety of applications which have been, afforded him not the fmalleft relief—and I doubted of his ever obtaining it, at his advanced age.* A few days fince. he was fo vio- lently attacked, that the intellectual functions were en- tirely deranged, and I apprehended very ferious confe- quences. Inthisfituation, I purchafed a fet of Dr. Perkins's patent Metallic Tractors, which, after the iiril operation, afforded him fo much relief, as held out thepleafing prof- pectof his entire recovery. After lepeating it for a few days, he became perfectly eafy and free from pain, and his mind reftored to its natural (trength ; no indifpolition remaining, but what is confequent on age.1' Philadelphia, May 27, 1797. #■ Seventy-three years. I had taken cold; and at that time the fore was in a high ftate of inflammation, and gave me great pain, to fuch a degree, that I had been obliged to keep my leg in a horizontal pofition, in a chair, the moft of that day, when Doctor Elifiia Perkins, of Plainfield, called on me, and having operated on me a few minutes with his patent Metallic Inftruments, the pain in my leg wholly ceafed, and the rednefs and inflammation of the wound entirely difappeared. 1 was free from pain that night, and indeed the pain and inflammation both ceafed from that operation, and never returned again. And I further certify, that my wife, at that time, was forely afflicted with Rheumatic pains in her hip, which had been upon her a number of years, and had aft'edcci her t<* ( '7 fuch a degree, as to render that fide fliorter than the othen^ and to make her unable at that time to raife herfelf from her chair without the greateft difficulty, or to walk acrofs the room without leaning on her ftaff, and with thatfup- port, not without the greateft inconvenience; and Dr. Perkins operated upon her a few minutes, when flie de- clared herfelf free from pain, andimmediately arofefrom her chair, without any afiiltctnce or apparent difficulty, and walked feveral times acrofs the room without her ftaff, or any other fupport, and has continued to this time able to walk in that manner ; not having complained of, or been troubled with pain in the night, (of which fhe had much complained before ;) and has truly been, to all ap- pearance, a different perfon, as to the ufe of her limbs, from the time of that operation, from what fhe had been for vears before. THIS certifies, that Doctor Eliflia Perkins, of Plain- field, Connecticut,- vifited the poor-honfe •>! this me- ( i8 ) tropolis, about three weeks ago, and performed opera- tions on feveral patients, with his celebrated Metallic Points ; among whom he performed his operation on one John Pattcrfou : he had been in the poor-houfe for fix months, with the rheun atifm—Two months of which he was- confined to his bed—four months he had hobbled about with crutches, when Doctor Perkins performed the operation; fince which, he has thrown afide his crutches, and walks only with a ftaff, which he ufes, not for the rheumatifm, for he has none, but merely for a fupport, as his thigh bone was then and ftill remains diflocated. Nancy Blake was alfo cured by the Doctor, of the rheumatifm in the fmall of her back, which had conftantly afflifted her for more than three years, it has not yet re- turned—I, myfelf cured Benjamin Rofs of the rheuma- tifm'm the fmall of the back and hip. Lewis Dumeth, a Frenchman, was operated upon by the Doctor, for the rheumatifm in his lower extremities, which had confined him to his bed and crutches for months; but no fooner was he operated upon, than he threw afide his crutches—walked about the houfe—has walked about the town fince, and has had no return of the rheumatifm in either leg. Newburyport, Octo. 28, 1795. THIS certifies, that Doctor Perkins vifited the alms- houfe in this town yelterday. and performed opera- tions with his Metallic Inftruments on three perfons, viz. one woman and two men, who have been grevioufly afflicted with the rheumatifm, and from die belt obferva- tions I have been able to mak, in a fhort time, they all appear to be much relieved of their complaints. NATHAN PIERCE. Mr. NATHAN GLOVER & Mr. AMOS SIMONS. I NATHAN GLOVER, of Plainfield, in the county of Windham and ftate of Connecticut, certify, that for fe- ven years paft, I have been frequently vifited with fevere turns of the qui/fey, which (notwithftanding the appli- cation of internal and external means, adminiftered by the moft fliilful negihboring phyficians) have never left me within eight or ten days. About the firftof July, 179C, Iwasagainfeverely attacked by thisdifeafe, and in about twenty-four hours, my throat became very much fwelled and inflamed, and extremely painful. I was, at this time, vifited by Doctor Perkins, who operated on the difeafed part, with his patent Metal- lic Inftruments. The pains, after two or three operations, wholly left me, and the inflammation entirely difappeared ; the fwel- ling did not maturate and break as it had ufually done, but in about twenty-four hours wholly fubfided, and my throat became perfectly well. The turns of the quinfey which I have heretofore had, though not more fevere in their firft attacks than in this, have never left me fliort of the term of eight or ten days ; whereas this continued but two : And I have no doubt but it would have kited as long as the others, had not Dr. Perkins operated with his Inftruments. I believe the cure to be effected wholly by his means. NATHAN GLOVER. Plainfield, Auguft 9, 1796. In this unhappy fituation, I continued about three months, until in the month and year above-men- tioned, I applied to Doftor Eliflia Perkins, who vifited me, and operated on the pained part of my ancles, witb his Metallic Inftruments. Immediately the pain ceafed, and has never fince returned. I am perfuade'd a radical cure was at that time effe&ed. ELIZABETH SNOW. f lain field, Auguft 1, 1796. As /was far from hav- ing any faith in fuch apparently fimple means, /treated them with ridicule. However, / confented to his opera- ting on the affected part; when, in a few minutes, to my jrrear. aftonifhment, the pain wholly left ine, and has never fince returned. CYRUS SPAULDING. Cyrus Spaulding was eafed of pain, by Dr. Perkins, as certified above ; and that I have alfo myfelf feveral times removed pains of differ- ent kinds by his Patent Metallic Inftruments. Cures per- formed in this way, appear Jo me as real, and no more liable to a relapfe, than thofe by any other means. The cure of an accidental fcald I have myfelf experienced.— The pain was relieved in a few minutes, the foreuejs foon left it, and the cure was entire. I am perfuaded that the invention is important, and will be of great benefit to man- kind. JOEL BENEDICT, Paftor of a Church in Plainfield, Auguft co, 1796. Rev. LEVI HART. I further certify, that, at the fame time I cured a whitlow on one of her thumbs, with one operation. They havefeidom failed to relieve the head-ath, tseth-ach, ague i.i the face inflammation of the eyes, cramp, cholic, rhcuvmtihn, pai'-s in the breaft an A fide, biles, fcalds and b:;rus : Sometimes there has been a perfect cure from one operation. A lad ^ who had been confined three days with high fymptoms cf a fever, very hot and full of pain, by an operation of the Points, defigned to relieve his head ; his face turned pale and cold, his fever and pain immediately left him, and, in a few days, he was out of doors. I CERTIFY, that on the 2>ft of March. 1796, I faw Dr. Perkins' method of cure by pointed Metallic In- ftruments, tried with fuccefs, upen feveral patients in the poor-houfe or bettering-houfe in Philadelphia; efpeciatly i»ron a man who was unable to lift his right hard to his head, as was tried before hand, but who, after a few mi- nutes operation, was able to move it with pleafure ; and in my fight, put it with eafe on the top of his head and back of his neck, and in a!i directions. Nearly the fame effect took place upon a woman ; :?nd all that 1 law treated, profefled that their pains ceafed after being treated a fhort time : And feveral came vo- luntarily, and in my hearing, thanked the Doctor for cures he had performed on them about eight weeks be- fore, in removing pains from them, which they declared had not lime returned. So that from what I faw with mine own eyes, and what I have heard, I have great hopes that this method will greatly tend to alleviate the miferies of mankind ELHANA^ WINCHESTER* Fkladelphia, April a,, 1796. ( 25 ) DOCTOR P£TER CLARK. I CERTIFY, that on or about the ift of December laft, in confequence of taking cold, I was feized with an inflammation and tumefaction of the Glands i-i my Throat, accompanied with fliootiugpains; I, however, bore them till the evening of the third day, without making life of any application, when the pain and difficulty of fwallow- ing had very much increafed. I then made life of Doctor Perkins's patent Inftruments; in a few minutes the pain entirely left me ; the difficulty of fwallowing was very much relieved, and the next morning my throat was en- tirely well. PETER CLARK. Nevj-York, Jan. 23, 1797. REV. JOHN BANKS. THESE are to certify, that I have operated with Dr. Perkins's Metallic Points, upon my head, chiefly on my fore-head and eye-brows, which had been long the feat of a rootedpain, and in a fhort time found immediate relief, fo that the pain which had, afflicted me for a nunflber of years, was, by means of thefe points, entirely removed. JOHN BANKS. New-York, Jan. 22, 1797. DOCTOR JAREB DYER, Member of the Medical Society of the ftate of Con- necticut, and Surgeon to the 21 ft Regiment. I Certify, that, for feven years paft, I have been trou- bled with almoft a conftant Rheumatic Pain in my fhoulder. For the two laft years it has gradually encreaf- ed, till it became very diftrefling, and has been attended with aftiffnefs, to fuch a degree, that I could not raife my hand to the top of my head without great difficulty. On or about the 18th of June laft, I myfelf operated on my fhoulder, when it was in extreme pain, with Dr. Perkins's Patent Traitors. The pain, tomysreatfurprifc, 1 C 26 ) wholly left me within fix minutes, and my fhoulder was foon freed from its former ftiiliftefs ; fo that I could move that arm and fhoulder with the fame eafe that I could the other. The pain has but once returned, and then very lightly, in confequence of fevere exercife : It was imme- diately removed by applying the Tractors. I further certify, that I have been afflicted with a pain in my Head, for twenty years paft. It has ufually come on in the fore part of the day, and continued ten or twelve hours.—Has often been very diftreiiing. About the time of the above operation, I applied the inftruments to my head, when in fevere pain. I was in a few minutes eafed, and the pain has not fince returned. For three years-before this operation, I do not think I have been three weeks at a time free from this complaint. From what I have expe- rienced, and heard, of the efficacy of Dr. Perkins's Inftru- ments, I doubt not but they will prove of gr,eat utility to mankind. JAREB DYER. Canterbury, April 11, 1796. DOCTOR RUFUS JOHNSON, Member of the Medical Society of the State of Connecticut. I CERTIFY, that in the courfe of my practice, a few months pall, I have made frequent experiments with Doctor Perkins's patent inftruments, and have, with but very few exceptions, fucceeded to my great aftonifhment, in removing rheumatic pains, liead-achs, agues in the face, cramp-convulfio>is, and inflammatory Jwellings of the , throat. The pains, after being once eafed, havevin but few in- ftances, returned; and then, by a repetition of the opera- tion, have been wholly removed. From my own practice, and from what I know of the practice of others, I efteem Doctor Perkins's method of removing pains, a very important and ufeful improvement in the healing art; and wifh that his inftruments may be generally difperfed, that mankind at large may have it in their power, by thefe fimple means, to eafe themfelves ox moft of the bodily pains which fo many experience. RUFUS JOHNSON. Canterbury, Auguft 10, 1796. ( *7 ) DOCTOR T. BACKUS, Member of the Medical Society of the State of Connecticut. 1THE fubfcrifcer was called on the 4th inftant, to at- tend a patient, by the name of James Crawfo.i, who, for the term of nearly five years, has been frequently trou- bled with afpecies of epileptic fits. When 1 tirft faw him, he had experienced, in the courfe of the day, about twelve, each of which held him nearly fifteen minutes. At the commencement of one of them, I took from_him about fourteen ounces of blood ; but difcovering no hap- py effect, I applied Dr. Perkins's Metallic inftruments to his right leg, in which he ufnally experienced the firft at- tack of his fits. The whole leg immediately became lim- ber and free from fpafms, and he foon revived without fuf- fering a general convulfion. About twenty minutes after, I being out of his room, was informed that the fymptoms of another fit appeared, and before I could operate on him, he was univerfally convulfed with an entire lofs of reafon. I then applied the inftruments to his right leg, fix or eight ftrokes, when the fpafms immediately ceafed, and he recovered his reafon. In a fliort time, he wan feized with another, which was removed very much in the manner of the laft, the inftruments not being applied until a general convulfion had taken place. I then feated myfelf on his bed, that I might be enabled to apply the measts more feafonably. Here I very foon difcovered the fymptoms again, but by applying the inftruments, the fvmptoms immediately difappeared. Several others, at Intervals, commenced with their ufual fymptoms, by fo contracting and cramping the right leg, that the utmoft exertions of two men were fcarcely able to ftraighten it, each of which were, in lefs than a minute, removed by five or fis. ftrokes of the inftruments, before they had ex- tended to the other parts of the body, the leg almoft in- Itantaneoufly becoming perfectly lax. By the requeft of a number of gentlemen, who were then prefent, when the fymptoms of one appeared, I ceafed to operate, that we might determine whether the above operations had prevented the general convulfions, which before the applications of the inftruments, had al- ways fucceeded the firft attack in his leg. Immediately he fell into a fevere fit, which appeared in one univerfal fpafm. in this fituation, I fuffered him to continue a few ( *» ) I minutes, when, by applying- the inftruisents to his leg again, in lefs than one minute he was entirely free from any kind of fpafm, and immediately reco\ tied his reafon. I ltill continued by his fide, and prevented feveral other general attacks by operating uith the inftruments at thc^ beginning of the fymptoms. About one hour and an halt' after the rirft operation, the fits entirely fubfided. He be- came very eafy, and experienced none of thofe difagreea- ble fenfations, which he ever had after former attacks of this kind. He informs that he had ufually been afflicted with thefe fits, except at a few interval;, about twenty- ' four hours from the time they firft commenced, and it is prtfumed the application of the Metallic Inftruments, not only (hortened the fits, but leliened their number, as at this time they continued riot more than nine or ten hours from their firft commencement, and about an hour and • an. half after the firft application of the inftruments. He further obferves, that he hasdifeqvered none of that de- | bility which had univerfally fucceeded hisformer attacks? and continues, to"this day, enjoying better health than Ufual. THOMAS BACKUS. We, the Subfcribers, were prefent at the above opera- tions, and fully agree with Doctor Backus, in hii ftate* ment of facts. CHARLES MILLER, JOHN LESTER, PHINEHAS KINDAL, JOHN PIKE, RECOMPENCE HALY. Main field, Auguft 9, 1 96. BENJAMIN SHREVE & JAMES LAURASON, \ Merchants, Alexandria* JHAVE been a .witnefs to an operation of Dr. Per- kins's Metallic Points on my ton, for the relief of epi- leptic fits. He has been fubject to thefe fits for about eighteen mouths. On the twenty-tlUrd day of the fourth month, he was ( *9 ) feized with one, with entire lofs of reafon—hi3 hands fo clenched together by fpafms, that the efforts of Mr. Ja3. Laurafon, (whofe afliftance / called in,) and my own, could not open them, in this fituation, -we applied E>r. Perkins's Metallic inftruments, on each arm, from the elbow down to his hand, and, to our great fnrprife, his hands foon became perfectly lax, and opened with eafe, and by continuing the operation on his head for a few mi- nutes, he came to his reafon and went to fleep, fince which he has had no more figns of them. On all former attacks, they have continued half the night, and from twelve to twenty in number. Bleeding and other experiments have been ufed, but he was never before relieved of them fo immediately. / am confident the points effected the cure. Conceiving it the duty of every friend to human hap- pinefs, to encourage new and ufeful difcoveries, / have ftated the above. BENJAMIN SHREVE. The fubfcriber was as a witnefs to the above operation, and can teftify to the facts ftated. JAMES LAURASON. Alexandria, 5 th month, 7 ibthday, 1796. 5 CALEB BICKHAM. Philadelphia, 5th month, iothday, 1796. BElNG fully convinced from a number of experiments* of the efficacy of Dr. Perkins's Tractors, / am happy in having an opportunity of declaring it to the world, with others who have been liberal enough fo todo, when thus convinced of their effects. I have made ufe of them, in cafes of pains in the head, back,ears,andburns,rh;iimati/ms,andp.Teurifies,andhzveY>ro~ duced very extrao edinary relief to my aftonifliment. in fome inftances, I have found two operations necctfary, and in two cafes have been obliged to ufe them three times. / think it one of the greateft difcoveries ever made for the relief of human pains, and wifh it and the author firccef* and progrefs. CALEB BICKHAM. c 2 :; ( 3° ) SAMUEL H. P. LEE, M. D. Member of the Con*' ne&icut Medical Society. New-London, Dec. 29, 1796. Sir, THE following hiftory of cafes are^mong tbe number, of which I have to inform you were treated folely by the practice of your Metallic Points. CASE I. A boy eight years of age, being convalefcent from a bil- lions remitting fever, was attacked with a fevere phleg- monic -inflammation in one of his legs. On the fixthday of its fwelling / was called in for advice ; confiderabie fluctuation had made its appearance about his ancle, and ' the whole leg was fo tumefied, that he could neither j bear it to the floor nor lay it with eafe on a pillow or in abed. The tendons of the foot and leg were contrac- i ted, and he could not fleep for three nights, more than J half an hour : He w ould frequently cry out as if a needle had been pricking his foot; had a febrile heat over his body, and loft his returning appetite. / ap- | plied the Metallics, and, in fix minutes,^ he decla- red he was much eafier. In two hours time, after a conftant ufe of the Inftruments, he fell afleep, and did not awake or make any complaint until eight o'clock the next morning, when / vifited him, and- found the whole tumor fubfided nearly to its natural ftate, except the place where the fluctuation appeared, which/conjectu- J red would foon burft ; however, the Inftruments were | continued, and all appearances of tumefaction totally difappeared in four or five days, without any pain or I forenefs, except a little in the ancle. It is not improper i to remark, that during the five days before / faw it, | the family had applied a few common poultices, and "*| fome applications of vinegar, fpirits, &c. On the • fixth day, they declared the inflammation appeared to them greater than at any preceding period, and more !j <>paiqfu.l:' tha,t no other application either external or iu- itawalwas ufed but the inftruments, from that time. it . Case II. A young woman, aged 19, had a fpontaneous phlegmo- nio-mflammation on the upper fide of the foot, attended with great pain and tumefaction. On the ninth and tenth iays, the Inftruments were ufed, previous to which bo- C 3' ) thing had been applied. The pain immediately mitigated, the fweUrng lubfide4,confiderably, and in the night follow- ing, imperceptibly bi^rft. The Inftruments were continued ; the wound difcharged but very little, and in forty-eight hours from the time it burft, die walked in perfect ^.\is, and her foot was well in foardays. Case III. My little child was /called with very hot tea, on the fore. head, about three and an half inches in length, and three- fourths of an inch in breadth, which railed a vificle, be- fore /had time to get any thing to apply to.it. The Me- tallic Points were folely ufed, and by three operations, the whole rednefs difappeared ; the blifter broke, and the liquor under it, formed itfelf into a fcabby furface. The next day the wound was perfectly circuuifcribed to the part bliftered, and in three days the whole call off, and left the fecond (kin perfectly entire, w ithout the fmalleft ap- pearance of fuppuration or inflammation ; and what is extraordinary, it never appeared to give the child the fmalleft pain, itching or fmarting, and in appearance was fo unlike a burn, that many enquiries were made what it was that grew on the child's head. C A S E IV. A lady, fell from her horfe, and diflocated her anils, which remained feveral hours before it was reduced, by which it b. came very much fwelled, inflamed, and pain- ful. Two or three operations with the Metallics relieved the pain, and, in aday or two, fhe walked the houfe, and had no farther complaint. I have ufed the Metallics, in many other inftances, wherein they appeared to have very falutary efiects, but as the ufe of them were accompanied with other reme- dies and applications, I forbear mentioning them in this ..place. I am., &c. SAMUEL H. P. LEE. Wind/iam-County, Auguft 16, 1796. E, the Snbfcribers, certify, that from a variety of cafes, which have occurred, not onlyrjn our ojyn practice, but in that of our neighbouring phyficians, we W ( 3> ) are fully convinced of the utility of Doctor Perkins's patent Metallic Inftruments, in removing various pains, fpafms, and inflammatory affettions from the human body, and that the difcovery is important to the healing art. * JOSEPH BAKER, * JONATHAN HALL, * ELISHA LORD, * JOHN BREWSTER. There- fore , Voted, That the faid Eliflia Perkins be expelled front: the medical fociety of the ftate of Connecticut. To the firft of thefe votes I Jhould long fince have pub- licly replied, did I not conceive it too. bafe and contemptible to merit my notice. The file in whick.it was dictated, thf precipitate manner in which, it was hurried through tfa ('■ 34 ) Convention without my knowledge, were too abuftve not to convince every candid mind of the fource from whence it originated. In the fecond vote, not pretending that the* charges in the former had been fuhftcntiated by time and experience, they at length difcover new grounds for accufation, and on thefe grounds they have effected my expulfwn. My whole crime now confifts in having, what the Convention call, a noftrum, or, in compliance with a law of the United States, enacted for the file purpofe of promoting the progrefs of ufeful arts, have, under the fanction of our firft confii- tuted authorities, obtained a patent which might enable me to defray the expenfes that have arifen in diffeminating a knowledge of its importance. To determine the reafonablenefs of attempting to load me ivith an opprobrium by an expulfion, on the grounds of my paving obtained a patent, 1 appeal to thofe jujl and equita- ble laws of our land, which were framed for the purpofe of encouraging new and ufeful improvements, and to that prin- ciple of moral fit/lice, whichfimulates anhoneft man to re- compenfe thofe to whom he is indebted. While I am making thefe remarks, it is my duty to obferve, that all the Members of the Society were not concerned in thofe extraordinary proceedings. Several refpebtable Fellows and Members, as may be obferved in this publication, who have been fur- nifhed with the Infruments, have generoufy come forward, notwithftanding the menaces of the Society, and openly de- clared their fentiments in favour of the practice. In- fluenced by the fame worthy and philanthropic motives, other characters, ofthefirjl refpectability, havepublifhed their at- iejlations independent of that buffonery, which, by interefted perfons, is too often exerted to difcourage ufeful innova- tions. . A ufeful treatment for the Dyfentery, and Scarlatina An- ginoja or Canker Rajli- IN the courfe- of an extenlive practice for about 5 years paft, I have met with the moft plealing fuccefs, in ( 35 ) treating the dyfcntery and fcarlatina anginbfa; and as thefe complaints frequently extend their baneful ravages,I take pleafure in communicating to the public a Ample re- medy, which, when judicioufly ufed, has feldom failed of removing thofe difeafes. Saturate any quantity of the beft vinegar with com- mon marine fait; to one large table-fpoonful of this faiu- tion, add four times the quantity of boiling water ; let the patient take of t!-iis preparation as hot as it can be fwallowed, one fpoonful once in half a minute until the whole is drank : this for an adult. The quantity may be varied according to the age, fize, and conftitution of the patient. If neceffary, repeat the dofe once in fix or eight hours. ConliderabJe evacuations, I con- ceive, to be, not only unneceffary, but injurious, as they ferve to debilitate and prolong the difeafe. A tea of plantain or fome other cooling, fimple drink, may be ufeful, and if a thirft for cyder be difcovered, it maybe gratified. Carefullv avoid keeping this preparation in vefl'els partaking of the qualities of lead, a> the poifon produced by that means, may prove dangerous. The fuccefs of the remedy depends much on preparing and giving the dofe, as above-directed. The iimpiicity of this treatment renders it the more valuable, as all perfons have it in their power to avail themfelves of its ufe. I have found it ufeful in agues, diarrhoeas, and the yel- low fever. 0 I promife myfelf the pleafure of publifh- mg, when I (hall have leifure, a treatife on the caufe and cure of difeafes, upon principles mate- rially differentfrom thofe which have been here- tofore embraced.
