BESIDES other things that will happen this year, there will be a tranfit of Mercury the fecond day of November, in the afternoon ; and as Mercury will but juft touch upon the inferior limb of the fun, thereby re. ! quiring a more delicate calculation, I have taken no final] Ipaias in collcfting the elements of Mercury’s motion, in order that the calculation may be rendered pretty correft; and in order thereto, I have availed myfelf of the obferva lions made of the tranfrt of Mercury, the g,:h day cf No- vember, 1769, by tbe Philofophical Society in the city of Philadelphia. The worthy gentleman who drew up the account of the obfervatio s, fays, that the Apparent time of the ecliptic conjunction, at Philadelphia, wa» * $h. izm. 46,5 fee. at which time, fsyi he, the place of the fun was 7 t. 17 dfg. 50 m. 41 fee. and the place of Mercury, from Halley’s table, 1 s. 17 deg. 50 m. 41 fee. and as he had found from a calculation, which he made frem the obferva ions, that the afeerding node of Mercury was 2 deg 15 m. 12 fee. from the place of Mercury, he con- cludes the place of the node at that time to be 1 s. 15 deg. 35 m. 29 fee.—Here it will not be improper to obferve, that the fun’s place, there mentioned, included in it the equation to the tquinettial points, which by no means ought to have been ; but the place cf the fun (houla have been computed from the mean equinoctial point, which at that time was X 7 s. 17 deg. 30 m. 25,7 fee. ard, by obfervatior, the place of Mercury was in the op. polite point § is. 17 deg. 50 m. 25;,7 fee. but from a cal- culation which I very carefully made, from Halley’s ta- bles, the place of Mercury, from the mean equinox, was then 1 s. 17 deg. 50 m.4,7 fee.
