INSTITUTED IN 1802= REG ULJL TIQNS OF THE BOYLSTON MEDICAL LIBRARY. 1st. NO book shall be taken from the library with- out giving a receipt to the librarian. 2d. No book of plates shall be taken out, except- ing as hereinafter provided. 3d. No person shall at any time have more than two books from the library. 4th. No book shall be kept out of the library longer than one month. 5th. In the delivery of books, the librarian shall be subject to such regulations and restric- tions in addition to these regulations, as the medical professors, with the assent of the founder while living, and the corporation, shall prescribe. 6th. The persons entitled to the loan of books, shall be all such members of the Massachu- setts Medical Society, as reside in the towns of Cambridge, Boston, Roxbury and Charles- town, or within ten miles of the college. 4 Tth. The Students in medicine shall have access to the library during the continuance of the course of medical lectures, annually deliver- ed, for the purpose of taking out one volume only at a time. 8th. In case it shall at any time be by the Medi- cal Professors judged proper, and conducive to the advancement of medical science, that any work, contained in the library, shall be republished in this state, the copy of such work may be loaned, on condition, that the publisher be obligated to return the copy so loaned, bound as before, and to furnish four new copies of the work, either of the same edition, or of some later European edition, equally well bound, as the work reprinted from, that may be loaned for the purpose aforesaid. 9th. At such stated times as shall hereafter be determined, the librarian shall attend, for the purpose of admitting such gentlemen as wish it, to an inspection of the library, to examine plates, to peruse and take extracts from any of the books, {for which purpose pens, ink and paper are provided ;) and to view the preparations and other articles belonging to the anatomical Museum ; provided the said privileges be exercised in the presence of the librarian, or one of the medical professors. s 10th. No fee or emolument whatever, beside the stated provision, which may be made by the corporation, shall accrue to the librarian, or any other person, from the individuals, to whom books shall be loaned, or from the visitors of the museum. 11th. Once every year in the month of August, the library shall be inspected by a joint com- mittee of the corporation and overseers, to- gether with one or more of the medical pro- fessors, at which time all the books shall be returned to the library. 12th. At the annual visitation of the above men- tioned committee, minutes shall be made of all books missing and injured ; and the per- sons, to whom they were loaned, shall be re- quired to replace them, or make compensa- tion according to the judgment of the com- mittee ; and in case of refusal or neglect to comply with such requisition, the privilege of taking out books shall be either forfeited, or suspended, as long as such neglect shall continue at the discretion of the committee. 13th. From the time of the annual visitation, to the commencement of the medical lectures, all books shall be retained in the library for the special use of the medical institution, and no books shall be loaned to any person, except- A 2 6 ing to such students as are attendant on those lectures, until the close of the course. 14th. One important use of the medical library is to enable the medical professors, at all times, to communicate to the students in their lectures, such improvements and dis- coveries, as may be made in the various branches of Medical Science, or in the chi- rurgical art. The medical professors shall, therefore, at all times, have free access to the library, and shall be allowed to take out such books and plates as they may have occasion to use, excepting those the corporation shall specially prohibit, giving always a receipt to the librarian, notwithstanding any thing con- tained in the foregoing articles to the con- trary. 15th. The Anatomical Museum shall be con- stantly under the inspection and direction of the Anatomical Professor, for the purpose of keeping it in a proper state of preservation and arrangement. CATALOGUE. THE following is a Catalogue of Books in the Library of the Anatomical Theatre at Cam- bridge ; for which the Institution is indebted to the munificence of Ward Nicholas Boylston, Esq. The books have been selected with care; and among them is found a most valuable and extensive collection of plates. This Library is increasing through the liberality of its founder, and xvill hereafter excel, in number of works, as it now does in value, all similar foundations in New England.
