NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE Bethesda, Maryland CATALOGUE A OF THE NATURAL PRODUCTIONS AND CURIOSITIES, WHICH COMPOSE THE COLLECTIONS OF THE Cabinet of Natural History, OPENED FOR PUBLIC EXHIBITION, AT NO. 38, WILLIAM-STREET, NEW-YORK. NEW-YORK: PRINTED BY ISAAC COLLINS AND SON, . , ! NO. 189> ^EARL-STREET. ^ «&»/ AMID the various improvements in science that have so conspicuously marked the latter part of the last century, and continue to do honour to the present, those in the de- partment of Natural History, are by no means the least or most unimportant. This instructive science, freed from the rubbish and the obscurity in which it was involved, has, by the genius and labours of a Linnaeus, a Buffon, and their successors, justly acquired a high degree of im- portance in the scale of public estimation; and nations as well as individuals have sought to rival each other in pro- moting discoveries and in forming collections of Natural History. There is scarce a city or town of any importance in Europe that is not possessed of a cabinet of that kind; but in the United States of America, the variety of whose productions and their dissimilarity from those of the Old World offer an ample field for the researches of the natu- ralist, there is scarcely a collection deserving the name, ex- cepting the one in Philadelphia belonging to Mr. Peale, whose indefatigable researches and laudable exertions to promote the knowledge of Natural History, entitle him to the gratitude of every friend of science. Presuming on the favourable disposition of the gentle- men of this city, to promote this useful and pleasing sci- N.L,M. 4 ence, and from conversation with several of them having been led to believe that a regular cabinet of Natural His- tory, consisting of a general collection of quadrupeds, birds, fish, reptiles, insects, of the most rare and curious plants of North and South America, and of such other animals and natural productions, as can be obtained from the other parts of the globe, would prove a desideratum, not only to the amateurs of this science, but to persons of information in general, the Subscriber, proprietor of a very extensive and valuable collection of subjects of Natural History, collected and prepared by himself on the coast of Guyana in South America, and consisting of a very great variety of quadrupeds, birds, fish, reptiles, insects, fruits, seeds, &c. &c. has determined to establish such a cabinet, and has, for that purpose, taken the house No. 38, in William-Street, where he has arranged his said collection and a number of subjects already collected in this country, in a scientific manner, according to their various kinds, classes and species, The rooms are provided with convenient furniture, with writing implements, printed catalogues of the subjects, and good authors on Natural History : and every accom- modation is furnished to those who are desirous of more particularly examining the collection and of becoming more acquainted with this science. The very flattering and honourable patronage which this establishment has obtained, when first instituted, from a number of gentlemen of the first respectability; the public approbation thereof, expressed in a letter to the proprietors, by characters of the greatest eminence in the scientific line, which has been published some time ago, and the uiversal acquiescence to its plan and arrangement, manifested bv all those who have visited it, induced the 5 paid proprietors to cherish the hope to see it sufficiently supported by the Public at large, to be enabled to com- plete it by adding, daily, new subjects to the collections; but far from having subsequently met with the hoped-for encouragement, they have had the greatest difficulties to encounter, and have been obliged to solicit the assistance of some true lovers of science, who, in order to preserve the establishment to the city, have liberally stept forward in its relief, and have saved it from dissolution. The Subscriber, at present sole proprietor of the cabinet, Still confiding in the public taste, and their disposition to promote the interest of science, trusts that the ladies and gentlemen of this populous and wealthy city, when better acquainted with the merit of the institution, which has for its object to disseminate information in a most agreeable manner, and to blend the pleasing with the useful,, will favour it with their patronage, by joining in its support, in a most moderate subscription. He pledges himself to the Subscribers, and to the Public at large, to make his establishment permanent in this city; to augment his collections in proportion to the en- couragement which he will receive; to exert himself as much as may be in his power, in order to make the insti- tution truly interesting and useful; and binds himself, if enabled by an adequate support, to travel through the whole continent of North America, for the purpose of procuring a skeleton of that anonymous animal called the Mammoth, which has given so much credit to the museum of Philadelphia, and of completing, as much as can rea- sonably be expected, the collections of the natural pro- ductions of the United States, so that the cabinet of New-York might, in an inconsiderable time, rival, not S only the above-said museum, but all institutions of the kind, in other parts. The price of the subscription for a single gentleman is two dollars ; for a gentleman and lady three dollars, and for the young ladies of the subscribers, above 12 years of age one dollar. The subscribers receive a ticket, which entitles them to daily admittance during a year, from the date thereof. The tickets not transferable. The children of the subscribers, under 12 years of age, are admitted without any payment, when in the company of their parents. The price of admittance for non-subscribers, until the cabinet is complete, is 25 cents, after which it will be 50 cents, without any distinction of age. Subscriptions are received at the cabinet, at Messrs. Isaac Riley & Co.'s Library Store, City Hotel, Broadway, and at Messrs. Ezra Sargeant & Co.'s Library Store, No. 129* Water-Street. New-York, 20M September, 1804. DELACOSTE, THE part of this catalogue which comprehends the vivipa- rous quadrupeds, is arranged according to t%e systemat- ic index of Thomas Pennant, and the references given for the descriptive history of the subjects, are to Smellie's English edition of Buffbn's Natural History, provided at the cabinet, for the accommodation of the subscribers, and other visitors. Although many natural historians have classed the ovipa* rous quadrupeds with fish, reptiles or insects, I make bold to place them immediately after the viviparous, as it can- not be denied, from the conformation of their limbs, that they are really four-footed, and thus quadrupeds. Having not been able to procure the authors who have par- ticularly described each species of them, I am under the IS necessity of referring to Oliver Goldsmith's, or George Henry Millar's General Descriptions of the same, whose Works are provided at the Cabinet. My respect for the authority of Linna?us, Brisson, Buffon, Pennant and others, who have classed this bird among the cloven-footed Water-Birds, obliges me to place it here, in the order ascribed to it by Pennant, in his systematic index; though conscious, from repeated observations, made on birds of ttys kind, during my stay in Cayenne, that they belong tS the Land-Birds : for 1 have opened several of them, and have always found in their crops 43 and stomachs seeds, buds, berries and insects, and never any fish, crabs, nor shrimps, which would have been the case, if they were Water-Birds. It is, however, true that they keep constantly in the over/lowed savannas, and round the ponds and lakes, which abound in that country; but the reason thereof is, their feeding on the seeds and berries of the shrubs which grow therein.
