The proprietors are requested to notice the following rules and regulations ; which will be strictly enforced. 1. THE library is under the charge of a sublibrarian, from whom books may be received, and to whom they may be re- turned, at all times. 2. A proprietor is allowed to take out six books at once. Fines. 3. A pamphlet may be kept out one week, an octave volume three weeks, quartos and folios, five weeks. For detaining books beyond the time permitted the fines are thus—for a pamphlet, 10 cents ; for an octavo, 15 cents; any larger size, 20 cents. For every week after the first the same fine is added. If a book be retained ten weeks, the cost of the same shall be paid in addition to the fine, and the book may be kept. For any pamphlet or volume out of the library, and not re- corded on the librarian's book, 50 cents shall be paid every week while thus absent from the library. The Trustees will decide, from the circumstances of the case, whether this fine shall be paid by the sublibrarian, or by the proprietor in whose possession the book or pamphlet may be found. 4. The sublibrarian will receive fines, but he will not un- dertake to demand them. 5. For injury of books, by ink, tearing, soiling, pencil marks, Sec. such compensation shall be made as the trustees may judge equitable. 20 6. The librarian will examine the records of the sublibrarian once a week. If he find any fines due, he will make a list of the same. This list he will place on the inside of the library door. If in three weeks after such a list has been posted, the fine or fines be not paid, he will then take down such paper, and place in its stead another, stating that " the right of A.
