REPORT OF THE STATE OF THE EDINBURGH ASYLUM FOR RELIEF OF THE INDUSTRIOUS BLIND, From 20th May 1794, to 20th May 1795. The Asylum was opened on the 23d of Sept. 1793. The nature and design of this institution having been formerly laid before the public, it is unnecessary to enlarge upon it, on the present occasion. Suffice it to say, that the great object of the charity is to administer relief and comfort to those poor unfortunate people, who, by the hand of God, have been de- prived of the common means of earning their bread, and re- duced to the most depressed, helpless situation. It will give particular pleasure to the friends of the institution to be in- formed, that they have been the instruments of alleviating the affliction of a number of their fellow creatures, and of pro- viding for their support, by enabling them to work for their own subsistence. The blind in the Asylum are no longer a burden to themselves and to the public, but are useful mem- bers of society, and enjoy life with some degree of comfort. 20 are upon the Society’s funds, and all of them appear to be contented, chearful, and happy. Some receive 3s, others 4s, and three 5s, a week. The manufactures in which they are A employed, (2) employed, are, making baskets and hampers of all kinds, matts of tarred and white rope, for cleaning the shoes at our doors, sail cloth do. mattresses both of hair and wool, and in picking oakum. The Directors have it under delibe- ration, to teach them to weave sail cloth, and any other ma- nufacture which the blind are capable of learning. The house where they carried on their work, in Shakespeare Square, being too small, the Directors have purchased one in the Castle-hill, in a more healthy situation, where the blind are much better accommodated, and where a greater number can be received, if the public shall continue to favour the institution. The house cost L. 375-From the disadvan- tages under which the blind labour, they must be slow in their operations, and cannot be supposed to earn near so much as is allowed them. The great object is to have them credita- bly and usefully employed. On Saturday afternoon, they are instructed in the principles of religion, and every morning and evening, family worship is performed. Regular accounts of the receipt and expenditure, after having been examined by the Auditors, are laid before a Ge- neral Meeting of the Society, every quarter, and have been approved of. The quarterly meetings of the Society are held in the Asylum, on the third Tuesday of Feb. third Tues- day of May, third Tuesday of Aug. and third Tuesday of Nov. at 2 o’clock, afternoon. The Directors have an ample reward for their trouble, in the pleasing reflection, that the public seem to approve their conduct, and encourage them to go on in their labour of love. It would gratify them much, to be able to admit all who apply, and to extend their plan likewise to women, which in their present situation, it is with regret, they cannot do. Contributions will be received by the Treasurer and Secretary, or by any of the Directors. An annual subscription will be necessary to give the Society a permanent establishment. A number of Gentlemen have al- ready put down their names, as appears by the annexed list. In Liverpool, L. 400 are subscribed annually.
