2 This booklet is intended to give a general idea of 
Saint Barnabas Hospital owned and managed by Dr. 
Wm. L. Cousins of Portland, Mame. This insti- 
tution founded in a modest way, in the summer of 
1905, has been obliged to expand itself almost from 
the first, and its growth has been marked by uniform 
improvements. Planned with the idea of providing 
a place where patients could obtain all the advan- 
tages of institutional care and treatment without the 
usual attendant disadvantage of being deprived of 
homelike surroundings, the hospital has met these re- 
quirements in a gratifying degree.

3 Approach to Hospital 
4 The location of the hospital is ideal. Situated in 
Woodfords, a nearby suburb of Portland, on high 
land, surrounded by broad lawns and shade trees, it 
is made most accessible to all railroad stations by the 
cars of the Portland Street Railroad System which 
pass the door. Quiet surroundings and ease of access 
are thus well combined.

6 The Main, or Administration Building, a picture of 
which appears on the opposite page, is given over al- 
most exclusively to the administrative business of the 
institution. Here are located the offices, resident 
physicians and nurses quarters, kitchen, elevator, 
reception and dining rooms, together with an electri- 
cal and X-ray room and a room for baths and 
hydrotherapeutical measures.

8 Extending along the entire front of the administration 
building are broad shaded verandas, to which patients 
are carried m cots or on wheel chairs as soon as their 
condition permits, thus affording them the comforts 
and delights of an abundance of fresh air and sun- 
shine, a measure which is a great aid m hastening 
their convalescence. It is so arranged that the veran- 
das may be glossed in during the colder weather 
forming large sun-parlors, so that they serve their 
purpose m winter as well as m the summer months.

10 On entering the hospital one finds on the left its 
^'L'* office and general waiting room-to the right is the 
X-ray room and the hydrotherapy rooms, where 
there are facilities for giving the various forms of 
haths and hydrotherapeutic treatments m the most 
approved and beneficial manner. This room when 
completed will have a tiled floor and walls and will be a 
model of its kind. Directly adjoining is a rest room 
to which patients may retire for a period after the 
baths before returning to their regular quarters.

12 The very important adjunct to the sick-room, the 
kitchen, has not been neglected. A large light airy 
room, with its great range and other facilities, it is 
placed at such a distance from the patients quarters 
that no annoyance from this source may disturb 
them. Foods, after being prepared here, are con- 
veyed directly to separate serving rooms on each floor 
of the Annex, where they are kept m proper con- 
dition in steam chests and can be served with ease 
and dispatch.

14 The reception room and lounging parlor for patients 
and their guests is a delightfully cosy room-fur- 
nished m the mission style, with heavy furniture, 
panelled walls and large open fireplace.

16 The rooms for patients are situated m the Annex, 
which extends as a wing from the main building (and 
was carefully designed especially for this purpose.) 
The arrangement is such that there is a bath room 
between every two rooms. This arrangement ren- 
ders possible the engaging of single rooms with or 
without bath, or two rooms en suite with bath con- 
necting. As has been before mentioned the rooms 
have been furnished and decorated with the idea of 
doing away with all that is bleak and barren m the 
ordinary general hospital, and with this m view have 
been fitted up with tinted walls and tasteful fur- 
nishings. Accommodations for thirty patients with 
private rooms can be furnished.

22 <T The majority of the work of the hospital is sur- 
gical m character altho patients suffering from any 
of the acute non-contagious illnesses are admitted. 
The operating room, located on the top floor of the 
Annex where it is isolated as much as possible from 
the hospital proper, has abundant overhead light and 
is furnished with all the apparatus necessary for 
this department of surgical work. 
Connected with the institution is a Consulting Staff 
which is composed of physicians and surgeons who 
are recognized authorities in their special line of 
work, and patients may thus avail themselves of the 
services of specialists m nearly every branch of medi- 
cine and surgery.

CThe nursing staff is vnder the direc- 
tion and control of Miss Littlefield, 
and comprises at present some seven- 
teen young worsen. . Pupil nurses are 
admitted for a ^^^T^years course in 
the Training School, under instruction 
of the consrdt'ng staff, and are given 
diplomas on the successful completion 
of their training. 
C Rates vary from $2.50 per day up- 
ward according to location of room. 
These rates include board and general 
nursing. Medical attention and sur- 
gical fees vary with the nature of the 
case. The services of a special nurse 
can be furnished when desired. Ad-
