Preface 
In this hustling, bustling age men and women are expected to ac- 
complish things. To do this, we must be alert every minute—all our 
senses must be constantly keyed to the highest pitch or we fall behind— 
we lose out in the race of life. 
And yet, no sooner do we attain this pitch than something goes 
wrong—our power to successfully complete the 'things expected of us 
vanishes—we are no longer able to cope with the world in our usual way. 
We feel a sense of weakness—the procession passes by. 
Do you know what is responsible for this, condition? 
Simply your health of mind and body. 
To have perfect health you must have perfect circulation. The blood 
is the great purifier of the human system, and if you allow your system to 
become so clogged that the blood is unable to properly do its intended 
work, general bad health is the result.

Circulation 
Perfect circulation means perfect health-—a fact admitted by all med- 
ical men. Therefore, could we always have perfect circulation we would 
always be in perfect health. 
But the question of perfect circulation involves a great deal in one 
way—and in another it is exceedingly simple. 
The Work of the Heart 
Taking the heart as the powerful working engine of our body—and 
we know this to be the case from the most eminent medical authorities— 
we learn that the heart is supposed to keep constantly pumping the blood 
throughout the body. And this blood is the great purifier of the human 
system. It is forced through and into thousands of blood vessels reaching 
to every organ and to every part of the body. The little red and white 
corpuscles that the blood contains are the 
vigilant workmen that tear down the waste 
tissue and build up new, which we must 
have in order to keep in perfect health. 
Nov/, if you have gradually allowed 
your system to become run-down and debili- 
tated you will find the veins and capillaries 
(the smallest arteries through which the 
blood flows) are so clogged that the blood 
cannot pass through freely. 
That is the start of the trouble and unless 
proper measures to overcome this condition 
are immediately used it is but the beginning 
of a siege that will terminate in a severe 
breakdown; some serious illness and ulti- 
mately death. 
The blood must be kept on the go 
through the body—and the arteries, veins 
and capillaries must be kept free from clogging. If they are not the blood 
is unable to properly do its duty. It cannot get to the vital parts that 
demand attention. 
Eliminating the Waste 
If this waste matter is permitted to remain in the blood, poisons, 
germs and gases are bound to collect and these make for poor health. 
They make it impossible for you to be one hundred per cent efficient. 
They account for that tired, listless feeling that you so frequently experi-

every time we move a muscle some portion of the tissue is broken down. 
This is what causes the continual waste. This waste gradually accumu- 
lates and it makes no difference how much care we take of ourselves, how 
regularly we eat our meals, or with what care we select our food, our 
sedentary life makes it impossible for the system to completely cleanse 
itself of this waste matter. Therefore, the necessity of Mechanical Vibra-

Circulation and Vibration 
The primary action of Vibration is to stimulate the circulation. It 
sends the red blood coursing through every artery and capillary, sweeping 
away the poison which causes all the aches and pains. It quiets all the 
aching, throbbing nerves and aids nature in her work of keeping the organs 
of your body vibrating harmoniously. 
Vibration is the greatest thing in the universe—it is a part of the 
universe. Light, heat and sound are caused by vibration. All energy is 
vibration. Electricity is a form of vibration. All things we have are 
directly or indirectly due to some form of vibration. 
The treatment by vibration is a form of massage. Vibration, however, 
is much more efficient than massage. It is almost intuitive with us. Sup- 
pose we bump our chin or arm or head, causing a 
pressure on the nerve at that place—what is the 
first action on our part? Why it is to rub it, of 
course. When we have in this way restored the 
usual supply of blood the nerve is released and we 
are relieved of the pain. Suppose the difficulty is 
deeper and where we cannot reach it by the ordi- 
nary massage. Perhaps it is an internal organ and 
then the ordinary form of massage will be of little 
use while Vibration can be used effectively. 
Vibration as a Mechanical Energy 
Circulation 
As a means of improving the circulation the 
electric Vibrator is ideal. The quickly alternating 
compression and relaxation of tissues has the efifect, 
first, of forcing the bad blood out of the capillaries 
and through the veins. The brief period of relax- 
ation causes the rich red blood to flow in after it 
and find its way into the starved and poisoned tis- 
sues. Thus perfect circulation is due to vibration. 
No sluggishness of blood is possible with the continued percussion stroke 
of the Vibrator at work giving the blood power to push its way through 
to every part of the body, giving us health and strength. 
The question is no longer asked whether the Electric Vibrator has 
any real scientific basis in the relief of disease. Many medical authorities 
and physicians have written extensively about vibration and its benefits 
and these alone should be sufficient to convince us of its worth. Our own 
good judgment can tell us nothing but the truth. We know the efifects

must follow, since massage is a milder form of vibration, that perfect circu-

A Run Down System 
Often, for some reason, the system is run down or some part of it 
fails to perform its functions and even the persons with the strongest nat- 
ural vibration find, temporarily at least, that they need a toning up. Then 
comes the time when no human hand, no remedy, no medicine, can do 
as much good as mechanical vibration, not only to restore the body to 
its normal condition but to build up a permanence of health and energy.

Osteopathy and Vibration 
Osteopathy is a system of treatment based on the theory that diseases 
are chiefly due to deranged mechanism of the bones, nerves, blood vessels 
and other tissues and can be remedied by manipulation of these parts. 
It is the scientific treatment of the human anatomy according to estab- 
lished facts of construction and functional activity. It does not super- 
impose on exhausted or injured tissues and organs the additional burden 
of drugs with their immutable law of reaction. 
Osteopathy comprises the whole field of medical practice, excepting 
surgery, but it makes use of no drugs. 
To fully understand the principles of osteopathy it is necessary to 
consider the human anatomy to which they are applied. The human body 
is essentially a chemical machine consisting 
substantially of a frame work of bone and 
muscle supporting various organs in which 
food furnishes material for the formation of 
the various tissues and the supply of heat and 
energy. 
If all the structures of the body are in 
place and performing their duties properly—in 
other words if anatomical relationship and 
functional activities are preserved—health and 
harmony reign. It is through a disturbance 
of normal relations in the body that disease is 
possible. All tissues receiving a proper nerve 
and blood supply, with unimpeded drainage 
through the veins, must be normal. 
Quality of tissue, functional activity, the 
condition of the individual, all are dependent 
on this principle—namely, blood supply or 
circulation through the vascular system controlled by the nervous system. 
The human body is a machine run by the unseen force called life and 
that it may be run harmoniously it is necessary that there be an unimpeded 
flow of blood and nerve energy from the generating point to destination. 
Osteopathy Defined 
What Osteopathy Deals With 
Osteopathy deals with the body as a perfect machine and aims for 
the perfect activity of every organ, muscle and tissue, and especially the 
blood. The Osteopathic physician employs physical force in the practice 
of his profession for the proper replacement of bones and organs and 
the stimulation of nerves, muscles and blood. It is a principle of manual 
massage—a pushing, rubbing and kneading of the flesh and tissues—used 
to bring about that circulation of the blood which will drive from the 
body all the waste material whose retention makes for poor health.

Thus it is clearly seen that the principle of osteopathic treatments 
embodies the same principle upon which mechanical vibration is based— 
the kind of Vibration you get with the White Cross Electric Vibrator—a 
stimulative action upon the parts of the body that force a perfect circulation 
of the blood. 
It would, of course, be manifestly unfair to attempt the comparison 
of mechanical vibration and osteopathy as far as the replacement into 
proper position of bones, organs or muscles is concerned.

Mechanical Vibratory treatment are founded upon the recognized fact that 
a perfect circulation means the healthy action of the entire body.

The History of Vibration 
Massage is a French word derived from a Greek word, meaning to 
knead; the Arabic “‘mass,” pressure; Sanskrit "masch,” to press, to strike, 
and is commonly known as meaning friction, rolling, kneading and manipu- 
lations performed on the tissues of the body in a variety of ways, with 
the object of improving the circulation of the blood and general stimulation. 
It dates back for centuries and has been practiced by many nation- 
alities in various ways, but until lately has not received the recognition it 
so richly deserves. 
The earliest knowledge of it was probably obtained from the Hindoos 
and Brahmins and next from the Chinese, and the Greeks followed. 
Cong-Fu, hundreds of years before Christ, prescribed a regular system 
of massage to ward off ailments. 
How It Was Used In Ancient Times 
Homer (1000 B. C.) mentions in his writings that rubbing was used 
for stimulation. The ancient Greeks and Romans used massage in case 
of illness, to increase activity and as a luxury. 
After exercise it was used to relieve pains and to invigorate. 
It can be found in the reading of “Vedas” of India. It was practiced 
in ancient Egypt and Persia. 
Herodotus (484 B. C.) mentions it, saying that friction was good com- 
bined with a little pressure. 
Hippocrates (450 B. C.) claimed that it was good for constipation and 
sprains. Socrates and Plato both said that “rubbing can loosen joints” 
and “moderate rubbing makes parts grow, while hard rubbing binds and 
too much causes parts to waste.” 
This should be remembered by those who use Vibrators. 
Galen of Rome (150-200 B. C.) and Asclepiades (100 B. C.) used 
massage. Celsus believed in it for chronic pain of the head and for invigor- 
ating a paralyzed part. Hadrian, Martialis, Pliny and Arrian and Oribasius 
also believed in massage. 
Using Friction 
Probably Herodotus was the first to give directions, and thus gave 
the principles for rational mechanical methods of treatment. He spoke 
of friction being given, gentle and slow at first, and then with pressure and 
more rapid. 
Hippocrates suggested the “Direction” by saying to rub up, thereby 
aiding mechanical means and aiding circulation. 
Julius Caesar used to have himself pinched regularly, as a treatment 
for neuralgia. 
Galen said friction should be used before exercise to make the parts 
supple. He even advocated nine dififerent ways of employing massage. 
The Greeks used a unique way to obtain Vibration. 
They wrapped one end of a saw in cotton cloths and applied it to 
the body, while with the other end uncovered they would saw a piece 
of wood, thus obtaining mechanical Vibration. 
Vibration Has Been Used For Centuries

The Romans used the lash to cure impotence, and the back was 
rubbed to cure sterility. Ladies allowed themselves to be whipped on 
the back to cure the same trouble. 
Mercurialis in 1573 A. D. published a book treating on movements. 
Francis Fuller, 1740 A. D., wrote a book speaking of the “Influence 
of Motion” as a medical aid. 
Massage Rollers and Muscle Beaters 
Paullini, 1700 A. D., prescribed slapping- and flagellation. Massage 
rollers and muscle beaters were applied in many ways and shapes and 
were really primitive Vibrators. 
In the middle of the 19th century Dr. Zander constructed his mechan- 
ical motion instruments, called “Head-Shakes”, for neuralgia, etc. 
Vigoreaux used a tuning fork in a 
resounding box to treat locomotor 
ataxia, etc. 
The next step was the invention 
of mechanical machines for massage. 
The first ones could vibrate, shake, 
roll and cause friction, but due regard 
to technique is essential to proper 
massage, both manual and mechanical.

quently the next and last need was to 
introduce a Vibrator apparatus by 
means of which treatments could be 
more localized and apparatus better 
controlled and capable of being applied 
with greater regard to technique. 
Then, to make them so light and at- 
tractive and at such cost that people generally could have one in each home. 
Th is we were finally able to do after years of patient effort. 
The Majority of the Machines 
All People Use Vibration 
People of warm countries and cold, barbarous and civilized, have 
methods of massage, manual and mechanical. 
The people of Oceanica strike constantly and softly with the fist, 
rubbing the palm of the hand and pressing and squeezing the tissues 
between the fingers and the thumb. 
This illustrates the combination of effects which can be produced with 
a Vibrator. 
The natives when using it for fatigue treat only the arms and legs, but 
if they use it for pain they treat only the surrounding tissues. 
The Sandwich Islanders use a mixture of kneading, squeezing and 
rubbing called “Lomi-Lomi,” and now in later days we have “Vibration 
and Massage,” obtaining our knowledge from the ancients and our ances- 
tors, but with improved methods and of course with more beneficial results.

“The circulation in relation to mechanical vibration includes the effects 
upon the heart, arteries, blood, veins and capillaries.” 
“From the effects of vibration applied as a tissue exerciser, it may 
be inferred that it increases the number of red corpuscles and the haemo- 
globin. Winternitz has demonstrated that exercise increased the number 
of red blood corpuscles.” 
“Nasal catarrh may be favorably affected by vibro-massage applied 
to the muscles about the nose, eyes and mouth, using vibratory stroking in 
an outward direction. A vibratory treatment of the neck will also assist 
the process. An internal nasal treatment is seldom necessary.” 
Increase the Blood Supply 
“Vibration increases the blood supply to the muscle, renders it firmer, 
more healthy and more elastic. In cases following injury it rapidly 
diminishes the tense hardness due to local statis so characteristic of the 
affected part. After the first treatment properly administered the part 
treated usually has a feeling of warmth and comfort. 
“Vibratory stroking has a soothing effect, and vibratory function by 
acting on the nerve of the blood vessels and lymphatics has a marked 
effect on inflammation. It also helps to give the tired nerves their neces- 
sary blood supply.” 
“Deep interrupted vibration with moderate or deep pressure is stimu- 
lating if the application is short, but it is exhausting if too strong or if 
it be applied too long.” 
“Mechanical vibration relieves congestion, assists elimination and 
absorption, and stimulates the functions of the various structures of the 
eye.” 
“The eyelids and face may be successfully treated by mechanical 
vibration. Vibratory stroking is indicated for the relief of paralysis, 
aedma, and ecchymoses. Twitchings are best treated by direct application 
over the motor points of the affected muscles.”

“Sexual neurasthenia, impotency and prostatitis may also be treated 
oy vibration either alone or in connection with electricity. For the treat- 
ment of which employ the rectal vibratode for five minutes or so, using 
the minimum stroke and a fairly rapid speed, taking care that the treatment 
be not too prolonged.” 
Correcting Digestion 
“Mechanical vibration is a valuable means for inducing the functional 
activity and correcting other derangements of digestion.” 
“Mechanical vibration promotes to a marked degree the functional 
activity of the liver, stomach and intestines—both promoting absorption 
and increasing peristaltic activity.” 
“Mechanical vibration applied to the stomach improves the general 
tone, increases motor and glandular activity, thereby aiding nutrition.” 
“Vibration of the abdomen has a curative 
effect on constipation, assists digestion by in- 
creasing the functional activity of the pan- 
creas, liver, stomach, promotes muscular nu- 
trition, increases absorption and renal elimina- 
tion, strengthens the muscles of the abdomen 
and increases nervous and circulatory activity, 
and slows the pulse rate.” 
How a Vibrator Should be Constructed 
“The essential elements of a good machine 
are as follows: It should be constructed so 
as not to injure, by soiling or tearing the pa- 
tient’s clothing; the vibrations should be 
capable of a range from weak to strong and 
the force of impulse and rate of speed should 
be under control (the rate ranging as high as 
6,500 vibrations per minute) and the stroke 
should be adjustable. It should be easily 
moved about, easily operated and readily 
adapted to the part to be treated. It should have the least possible fric- 
tional wear, and the applicators should be easily adjusted. The apparatus 
should be so constructed as not to be easily broken or put out of repair. 
Heavy weight is an objectionable feature.”

Vibration and Muscles 
From “Lessons in Vibratory Therapeutics.” 
The muscles constitute about one-half of the body weight and contain 
one-quarter of the blood. Not a movement can be executed without some 
of them being called into activity, and perhaps there is never a time in our 
life in which some of them are not in action. It is in the muscles that the 
capillaries give up their nutriment; in them the body heat is generated and 
maintained; hence their condition is a matter of concern. 
The work of muscle is done by alternate contraction and relaxation. 
As the muscle works, more blood is brought to it—the more work the more 
blood and also the more waste. This waste consists mostly of carbonic 
acid. Another waste product is sacro-lactic acid, so that, when working, 
the normally alkaline reaction of muscle is changed to acid, and if fresh 
blood is not fully supplied, the muscle is soon fatigued by the increase 
of the waste. 
Muscles Never Relaxed 
We have said that muscles are never com- 
pletely relaxed—they are always more or less 
on the stretch. This condition of tension, called 
“tone,” is under control of the nervous system, 
and, if kept up normally, is dependent upon a 
full supply of blood. Flabby muscles lack tone— 
blood—hence a depressed or paralyzed nervous 
condition must be present or a low condition of 
the circulation. Men with such muscles are of 
sedentary habit—do not exercise. Vibration or 
massage applied to the muscles of such indi- 
viduals will speedily restore the lost “tone.” 
Muscles of the Face 
and Neck 
Effect of Vibration on Muscles 
What is the effect of mechanical vibration on the muscles? From 
experience we have found the effects are similar to, but in some cases 
more pronounced than, those of massage. I cannot forbear letting Dr. 
Graham describe those effects. In speaking of muscles he says: “Their 
action presents a great similarity to' that of a beating heart, for at every 
contraction of a muscle, blood is driven out of it, and by this it, at the 
same time, receives an additional impulse in its return to the heart, while 
at every relaxation the vessels are again allowed to fill. Further, the heart, 
abundantly supplied with blood for its own nourishment, lasts a life-time, 
usually without fatigue, though in constant activity, while voluntary 
muscles, if allowed to remain inactive, suffer in size and strength.

Overcome Inactivity 
Hence the importance of some measure that will overcome the evils 
of inactivity, that will at once attract the circulation to the muscles and at 
the same time aid in its return. This indication 
is better fulfilled by the intermittent pressure of

Physical Development 
All athletes are familiar with the gratifying results of massage after 
over-exertion, when the muscles are stiffened and burdened with the ex- 
cessive accumulation of waste. This waste is carried away through the 
improved circulation, while the tissues are supplied with the fresh and red 
arterial blood, so they can readily repair or replace the broken cells.

Cause of Deafness 
Ninety per cent of all cases of deafness are caused by an inflamma- 
tion and congestion of the mucous membrane lining the nose, throat and 
middle ear, known as catarrh. A cold, cough, sore throat, la grippe, all 
have a tendency to bring on this inflamed condition. As the mucous mem- 
brane lining the throat is continuous with that of the upper pharynx and 
eustachian tube, the inflammation quickly extends to the middle ear, caus-

Dyspepsia and indigestion have been called the “National American 
diseases.” The American habit of doing everything in a hurry is undoubt-

Colds and Catarrh 
Most people do not realize the seriousness of a common cold. It is the 
old story of familiarity breeding- contempt. Almost everybody catches a

Lumbago

together with the racking agonies, as though every muscle in the back of

literature have been written on this subject, but the conclusion in every

Backache 
When the muscles of the back become affected through a strain, a cold

and the lazy pores are working overtime, as it were, setting their houses 
in order. Blackheads cannot exist where the pores are stimulated to do

First, of course, the face and neck are 
cleansed thoroughly with hot water 
and olive oil. Then, after they have 
been thoroughly rinsed in lukewarm 
water, a tissue builder is rubbed into 
the face and neck and shoulders. You

Almost every beauty specialist in the country will recommend facial 
massage as a beautifier; but many women do not do this successfully 
at home. They find it either too much trouble or cannot get the “trick” of 
doing it just right. This is one reason why the vibrator is found in so 
many homes; for it is used by the women who want to keep young with 
the least possible effort on their own part. 
But not only for this purpose is it found in the average up-to-date 
home. When you have that nasty twinge in your knee from rheumatism, 
apply the vibrator and it will rest the ache for a time—perhaps drive it 
away altogether. Applied to a bruise it frequently takes out the soreness; 
in fact, it becomes a household doctor which you can always have at hand. 
The woman who lives at any great distance from the city or within

Electricity has been much misrepresented for years by so-called electric 
belts, which have to be dipped in vinegar and which unscrupulous firms 
have advertised heavily and imposed on ignorant people. Even some mail 
order houses are still selling these belts as high as $30.00. They know

to see that some of the Health Journals, among which is the Physical Cul-

year. The current of the electric belt lasts but a few seconds and does no 
good. It is like giving a thirsty man but a single drop of water. 
You have never seen a respectable physician use an electric belt in his' 
office or even recommend it to his patient, but you see thousands who use 
both electric batteries and vibrators. You have never seen a book which 
was intended to be sold to physicians that endorsed electric belts, but we

AN ELECTRIC VIBRATOR 
Most of the vibrators do not give electricity 
with the vibrations but what is known as the 
Lindstrom, Smith Vibrator gives not only vibra- 
tion but electrical treatment with it. We wish to 
call the attention of our readers to the informa- 
tion given in the booklet that is sent free on 
application, which will prove of interest even 
thought you may not now need the vibrator. 
Another important appliance being introduced by 
the Lindstrom, Smith Company is an attachment 
to be combined with any ordinary chair by which 
you can make of it a vibrating chair, giving a 
form of treatment that is fully recognized as 
valuable but has been only secured in sanitariums, 
hospitals, etc., or by the use of expensive appara- 
tus. These appliances are likely to attract very 
wide spread attention and prove of great value.

AN ELECTRIC VIBRATING CHAIR 
By means of a special clamp just brought out, 
the Lindstrom, Smith Company, Chicago, afford 
means of attaching their Vibrator to an ordinary 
wooden chair, thus transforming it into a vibrat- 
ing chair. The clamp is fastened to the back of 
the chair with a thumb screw, and a little aux- 
diary clamp device surrounds the body of the 
Vibrator and holds it in the position shown. Sit- 
ting in the so equipped chair and leaning back- 
wards imparts a general stimulation to the body.—

A VIBRATING CHAIR 
A Vibrating chair for every home is now pos- 
sible with a new invention. 
The Vibrator is attached to a clamp, and this 
clamp can be attached to any part of the chair, 
either side, front or back. 
The Vibrator can be regulated so as to give 
from one thousand to many thousand vibrations 
per minute while the machine is in operation. 
Until now the Vibrating chair has been a 
luxury, as very few physicians have been able to 
get them on account of the high price. 
The extremely low price puts this outfit within 
the reach of all. For promoting circulation, etc., 
it has no equal, and the patient can be left in 
the chair without any attention from the physician. 
When the Vibrator is not attached to a chair, it 
can be used the same as any ordinary Vibrator is 
used. The Vibrating clamp and machines are in- 
vented and manufactured by Lindstrom, Smith

“Suffering humanity or those suffering with ailments that are curable by vibra- 
tion and electricity, will find much to interest them at the booth where the White 
Cross Electric Vibrators are displayed, at the south end of the main hall. This 
Vibrator is the medium through which health and beauty may be obtained, and it 
is suitable for face, scalp and body massage. The Electric Vibrator is made by the 
Lindstrom, Smith Company of this city, and their advice is not to pour drugs into 
your stomach for a pain in the neck, arm, leg or back, for, they say, ‘the pain 
is not there.’ As most diseases are caused by congestion, and as vibration will 
remove congestion quicker than anything else, there is nothing wonderful to me 
in the fact that the White Cross Electric Vibrator is popular, not only in this 
community, but elsewhere. The Vibrator I speak of is no respector of persons, for 
it can be attached to any chair and every member of the household can receive 
the benefits of Vibration and Electricity, the best natural remedies known to science. 
When I stopped in front of this booth one of the attendants ran a Vibrator over 
my right shoulder, which was humping itself with rheumatic pains at that partic- 
ular moment. The sensation of the Vibrator was like pouring oil on troubled 
waters. As I am not in the business of giving personal testimonials, I cannot say 
that I shall always have a kindly recollection of the third annual electric show 
just on account of that brief session with the Electric Vibrator, and its soothing 
touch was on the surface of a thick overcoat at that. But if I was in the business 
of giving testimonials, that is what I would say. and swear to it if necessary,” writes
