In order that the data of this Office may be made as complete as possible 
in relation to the operation of excision of the head of the femur for gun- 
shot injury, Medical Officers are requested to report any facts, however 
slight, within their knowledge, in reference to such operations performed 
during the War of the Rebellion, and which have not been described 
either in the tabular statement on pp. 62-74 of Circular No. 6, S. G. 0., 
1865, or in medical periodicals published since that date. Medical 
Directors and Chief Medical Officers will repeat this request to the 
Acting Assistant Surgeons reporting to them, who were employed during 
the War. Medical Officers stationed in the Southern States are also 
requested to report any facts which they can learn in relation to the 
performance of this operation in the Confederate armies. It is also 
desired, in this connection, that any unpublished examples of recovery, 
without operative interference, from gunshot wounds unequivocally 
involving the hip-joint may be reported.
