Dr. HAWLEY’S 
The general scope and design of the following series of remedies is to 
furnish physicians with ready and available means of fulfilling every indi- 
cation which may arise for promoting alimentation in disease. Each of 
the remedies has its specific, as well as its general uses, viz, Pepsine, in 
dyspepsia, infantile diarrhoea and vomiting of pregnency ; the pancreatic 
emulsions in pulmonary tuberculosis and marasmus and the Phosphates 
in rachitis and the scrofulous diathesis. Yet their more important and 
extended application is to remedy either general or special defects in nu- 
trition in impaired constitutions and during the progress of acute diseases. 
The y are to be regarded as remedial agents, rather than alimentary 
substances, these latter are intended to form a part of the additional items 
in the series, to be produced at some future time. 
DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE. 
1st. AMERICAN PULVERIZED PEPSINE.—Dose 15 grs. 
This, the analogue of Boudault’s “ Poudre Nutrimentive,”' is the 
most active preparation of Pepsine ever yet offered to the profession, as 
well as the lowest in price. 
2d.AMERICAN PEPSINA PORCI.—Dose 12 grs. 
This preparation is put forth in accordance with a somewhat preva- 
lent opinion that the pig, on account of its omniverous habits, would af- 
ford a Pepsine more suited to the human stomach, than the herbivora. 
3d. PULVERIZED PEPSINE IN DOSES. 
This form is intended as a convenient one for physicians prescribing 
Pepsine alone, but more especially for patients who require its continued 
use. 4th. PEPSINE LOZENGES—Dose 3. 
This is a convenient form for persons traveling or otherwise taking 
meals away from home, or for those to whom other forms of Pepsine are 
repugnant. 
5th, LIQUID PEPSINE—Dose 2 to 4 drachms. 
This is a very active and convenient preparation and a true equiva- 
lent of the gastric juice. It is prepared after a modification of Dr. 
Pavy’s method. One drachm is equal to five grains of Pepsine. 
6th. WINE OF PEPSINE—Dose 2 to 4 drachms. 
This is not rennett wine produced by the maceration of the stomachs 
of animals, but a true wine of Pepsine, made by dissolving pure, freshly 
made Pepsine in sherry wine, in fixed and constant proportions. It is an 
efficient and agreeable form for the administration of the remedy, particu- 
larly where a stimulant is indicated. Each drachm equals five grains of 
Pepsine. 
7th. GASTRIC PEPTONE—Dose 1 to 2 ounces. 
This is the name given by physiologists to albumenous substances after 
they have undergone gastric or pepsine digestion, and thereby become 
fitted for absorption into the circulation and to perform their office in nu- 
trition. 
This article consists of fresh lean beef artificially digested. It differs 
from beef tea and other extracts of meat in that it contains all the albumen 
and fibrin of the beef, of which they are destitute. It is furnished in an 
acid form and should be neutralized before using either by injection or the 
mouth. Each bottle is accompanied with sufficient carb sodae to neutral- 
ize its contents, thereby converting the hydrochloric acid into common 
salt. It is best administered in beef tea to give it flavor. 
8th. PANCREATIC EMULSION—Dose 1 to 2 teaspoonfulls. 
This (as its name implies) is pure beef suet, which has undergone 
pancreatic digestion. It is perfectly soluble in water or-milk, and is ready 
to be taken up by the lacteals and to enter at once into the circulation. 
The presence of large amounts of stearine and margarine renders it a 
highly nutritive, as well as remedial agent. For its effects in turbercular 
consumption see Dr Dobell’s report upon “Pancreatic Emulsion of 
Fat.” This preparation is to be preferred, to that of English manufacture, 
for its freedom from the etherous taste and smell, and its much less price. 
9th. PANCREATIC EMULSION OF COD LIVER OIL, 
Dose half the quantity required of Crude Oil 
This is believed to be a desideratum in medicine. Whatever value 
Cod Liver Oil may have in the treatment of disease, this possesses in much 
greater degree. Like the preceeding article it has undergone pancreatic 
digestion and is ready for assimilation. This will be appreciated by those 
who have found their patients unable to digest crude oil and retained it 
only to pass it away with the dejections. This is not a saponification, but 
a true pancreatic emulsion. 10th. FLOUR WHEAT PHOSPHATES—Dose 1 to 2 teaspooufulls. 
This consists of the soluble phosphates of wheat including thecerea- 
lin, combined with sufficient malt flour (glucose) to render them pulver- 
ulent. It not only furnishes indispensible alimentary substances, but is 
also an important excitant to the nutritive functions. It should be added 
to the food upon which the patient is ordinarily nourished. 
nth. PHYSIOLOGICAL FOOD—Dose 1 to 2 teaspoonfulls. 
This differs from the flour of wheat phosphates in being animalized 
by the addition of gastric peptone or digested beef. It may be substi- 
tuted for the phosphates when a nitro genized element is more especially 
indicated.
