Armored Medical Research Laboratory Fort Knox, Kentucky Third Partial Report On PROJECT NO. 5-12 - SEATING DESIGNING AND PLACING IN RELATION TO FaTIGUE Subject: Seat Cushions for Truck (4x4) J Ton (Peep) Project No. 5-12 17 October 1945 ARMORED MEDICAL RESEARCH LABORATORY Fort Knox, Kentucky Project No. 5-12 SPMEA 749.2-12 17 October 1945 SEAT CUSHIONS FOR TRUCK (4 x 4) t TON (PEEP) 1* PROJECT NO* 5-12 - Seating Designing and Placing in Relation to Fatigue. Third partial report. a. Authority; Letter Conmanding General, Headquarters Armored Force, Fort Knox, Kentucky, File 400.112/6 GNOHD, dated September 24, 1942. b, Purpose; To study improvement in riding comfort of the truck, i ton (peep) by installation of more adequate seat cushions. 2, DISCUSSION; Reference is made to this laboratory*s second partial report on the above subject dated 17 February 1945* Since this report further investigation has been made and samples obtained of a new seat cushion (Combi-Flex) under development by Firestone Industrial Products Company, Chicago, Illinois. The experimental cushions investigated have been modified to meet requirements this laboratory considers desirable for seat cushions of this type in general. 3. PROGUDURE: An experimental installation in a laboratory peep was made using the above seat cushions, (see attached photographs). The peep was driven over various terrains and criticism obtained from many observers. 4, CfiNCmSIQSa: (l) The seat cushion under consideration, installed in a peep, results in improved riding comfort and reduced fatigue for driver and occupants. (2) The seat cushion requires little modifications to adapt it for installation in peep. (3) The modified seat cushion alone will not adequately solve the seating problem for the £ ton truck (peep). Other improvements discussed in this laboratoryfs second partial report dated 17 February 1945 should also be considered. JT. RECOMMENDATIONS: (1) That action be taken to improve £ ton truck (peep) seats to provide increased riding comfort! reduce fatigue and guard against low back injury. (2) That seat cushions of the type under discussion be considered in development of seats to meet requirements of Recommendation (l) above* (3) That other requirements listed in Armored Medical Research Lab- second partial report be considered in development of adequate seats for i ton truck. NOTE: The recommendations as set forth in this project have been concurred in by Colonel Louis V, Hightower, President, Amy Ground Forces Board No, .
