GENERAL ORDERS, No. 171. AVAR DEPARTMENT, Adjutant General’s Office, Washington, October 29, 1862 I.-At a General Court Martial, which convened at St. Augustine, Florida, on the 2d day of May, 1862, pursuant to “ Special Orders,” No. 80, dated April 28, 1862, from Headquarters Northern District Department of the South, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and of which Colonel Alfred H. Terry, 7th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers, was President, was arraigned and tried— Private William W. Lunt, Company I, 9th Maine Volunteers. Charge 1st.—“Desertion.” Specification—“In this; that he, the said Private William W. Lunt, Company I, 9th Maine Regiment, stationed at Fernandina, Florida, at the time the alleged crime was committed, did desert from the U. S. Army and go to the enemy’s lines, without arms and accoutrements. This at Fernandina, Florida, on or about the 7th of April, 1862.” Charge 2d.—“Highway robbery.” Specification—“ In this; that he, the said Private William W. Lunt, Company I, 9th Maine Regiment, near the railroad bridge called Lofton, on the railroad running from Fernandina to Baldwin, Florida, did forcibly take from Miss Ellen Manning money to the amount of two hundred and sixty-eight dollars, more or less. This at Fernandina, Florida, on or about the 8th of April, 1862.” To which charges and specifications the prisoner pleaded as follows: To the Specification of the 1st Charge, “ Not Guilty.” To the 1st Charge, “Not Guilty.” To the Specification of the 2d Charge, “Not Guilty.” To the 2d Charge, “Not Guilty.” Finding. The Court, after mature deliberation upon the testimony adduced, finds the accused as follows: 2 Of the Specification of the 1st Charge, “ Guilty.” Of the 1st Charge, “ Guilty.” Of the Specification of the 2d Charge, “ Guilty.” Of the 2d Charge, “ Guilty.” Sentence. And the Court does therefore sentence him, the said William W. Lunt, Company I, 9th Maine Volunteers, two-thirds of the members con- curring therein, “ To be shot to death, at such time and place as the Com- manding General may direct." II.-In compliance with the 5th section of the Act approved July 17, 1862, the proceedings in the case of Private William W.
