THE USE OF GLYCO—THYMOLINE IN HEMORRHOIDAL DISEASE AND CONSTIPATION. INTERNAL HEMORRHOIDS. These may be effectually treated by first washing out the lower bowel with a hot (100°F) solution of two ounces Glyco-Thymoline to the pint, and following this with two ounces of a fifty per cent, solution to be re- tained till absorbed. The rapidity with which Pruritus Ani be relieved by the above method is astonishing. HEMORRHOIDAL DISEASE. The occurrence or hemorrhoidal disease during preg- nancy and persisting after confinement is a condition the Obstetrician is frequently called upon to treat. Caused as it is by interference with venous circula- tion, its continuance through the entire period of gesta- tion gives it a permanency that defies anything but . radical treatment. Sometimes the hemorrhoids are not noticed until the descent of the head forces them out, but more frequently they begin to make themselves felt about the fourth month and after that obtrude themselves more and more upon the notice of the patient, until they become almost unbearable. While the disease cannot be absolutely cured until the exciting cause—the baby's head—is removed, still Glyco-Thymoline alleviates the acute symptoms to a marked degree, and prevents the permanent establishment of the hemorrhoids, and permits of a cure being effected after the confinement without surgical interference. Application directly to the hemorrhoids should be made of full strength Glyco-Thymoline, or, better still, a small glass or rubber syringe may be used to inject a half-ounce to one ounce of fifty per cent, solution into the rectum; the latter to be retained. The rectum should be emptied by enema of warm water, in which a small amount of Glyco-Thymoline has been placed before either applica- tion is made. Applied full strength to external piles, Glyco- Thymoline relieves at once by virtue of its anesthetic property and, by producing exosmosis, rapidly empties the pile by causing exudation of the serum, reabsorption of the retained blood, and relieves the engorgement by stimulation of capillary circulation. CASE I.—Patient, a lady, had suffered from both internal and external hemorrhoids for several years. Had received treatment at the hands of several and had obtained but little relief. She refused operation, hence I sought palliative measures. Glyco-Thymoline was sug- gested to me. I tried it. Results were almost magical and for over six months there has been no recurrence of the trouble. I might say the case was of an aggravated type and particularly painful. The treatment consisted in throwing into the rectum, by means of a small glass syringe, about four drachms of Glyco-Thymoline three times a day and the application of gauze compress saturated with Glyco-Thymoline. CASE II.—A man, fifty years of age, of robust build, who had always enjoyed good health and muscular vigor was severely afflicted. The tumors were not large, but they gave rise to intense, lancinating pain in the rectum, shooting likewise into the urethra. There were frequent hemorrhages. For a month or more the man has not been able to sleep much and has lost considerable flesh. The use of the remedy as indicated above was followed by a very happy result. The symptoms were rapidly ameliorated and by the end of a month*had entirely disappeared. CASE III.—Miss C. W. 0., age 33. Aggravated case of both external and internal hemorrhoids accompanied with constipation, otherwise health perfect. I kept her bowels regular with Cascara and injected an ounce of Glyco- Thymoline full strength into the rectum night and morning, after washing it out with warm water; applied the same locally to the external tumors on cotton. The relief and improvement was most astonishing. After three days no further complaint was made and a permanent cure was the result. Now seven months have passed and no relapse. CONSTIPATION. The lack of peristalsis which results in torpor of the bowel is no doubt directly caused by the retention of the feces. The toxic principles of these retained feces paralize the nervous mechanism to which peristalsis is due. Glyco-Thymoline given freely seems to prevent this condition and to excite peristalsis. In such cases I prescribe frequently a dessert-spoon- ful four times a day and this with manipulative processes, is all that can he desired. CASE I.—A man came to me for treatment complaining of headache, vertigo and distention of the abdomen, had a hard stool once in two or three days with distress and straining. I gave directions regulating the diet and directed Glyco-Thymoline to be taken in teaspoonful doses four times daily in plenty of water. It acted as a mild laxative, producing a normal passage every day and all the symptoms subsided. Now he is using one teaspoonful a day to prevent any return of the condition. CASE II.—Miss F. C., age 30. Gastro-intestinal catarrh. Persistent nausea, vomiting of a frothy mucus, eructation of gas and constipation. Glyco-Thymoline 50 per cent, solution in warm sterilized water; a teaspoonful every two hours did not seem to give any relief. In- creased dose, one teaspoonful every hour for twenty-four hours and very little relief noted. I now decided to crowd the remedy still further by giving a teaspoonful full strength, every thirty minutes until decided relief. This did the work desired. In four hours all symptoms were relieved and the patient called for something to eat. Raw egg beaten up with a minute quantity of Saccharin was allowed. In this case the bowels became regular twice a day. Nothing had been given to produce this result. Does Glyco-Thymoline (Kress) contain laxative properties? This case went on to an uneventful and permanent recovery in six weeks. KRESS & OWEN COMPANY, 210 Fulton Street, New York, U. S. A. Manufacturers Glyco-Thymoline and K. & 0. Nasal Douche.
