The interments of the 834 persons who died in Lowell in the year 1854 were as follows - In No. 1 Yard, School Street. - . 36 " " 2 " -------- 50 " " 3 " 221 " Cemetery, ' ------- - 96 " Catholic Burial Ground, ------, 33g Removed from the City, ------ - _ 51 Total 834 15 REMARKS. During the past year, it appears by the foregoing tables, that 834 deathshave occurred, being a larger number than has ever occurred since the organization of the city, with the exception of the year 1849, when there were 903 deaths. Fright has been returned as the cause of one death-a fe- male between 20 and 30 years of age. The City Inspector of the City of New York reports two deaths from Fright in 1853-one male, over 80 years of age, and one female, be- tween 20 and 25 years of age. 14 deaths from Cholera have been reported the past year-in the month of July, 4 : all males; in the month of August, 10 : 5 males and 5 fe- males. In 19 cases the cause of death has not been reported. 20 death were reported from Casualties, being a less num- ber than usual. The cases of Croup have been more nu- merous and fatal this year than any previous one-the number of deaths being 47. 48 deaths from Cholera Infan- tum were reported-a greater number than has occurred since 1847. From Old Age 15 deaths were returned- eleven being over 70, three over 80, and one over 90 years of age. Dysentery has been more fatal the past year than any since 1849, the number of deaths being 60. Typhoid Fever has furnished less deaths than last year, being only 31. The months of January, April, and May show the least num- ber of deaths, 142; while July, August, and September fur- nish the greatest number, viz.: 341-being nearly one half of the whole number. The mortality in August was greater than that of any other month, viz.: 193; the least, in Janu- ary, viz.: 41. As usual, more deaths have been reported from Consump- 16 tion the past year than from any other disease, viz.: 173, being almost one-fifth of the whole number. The greatest mortality from this disease was in June, viz.: 25; the same number were reported in January and September, viz.: 10. On this subject, it has been said-" that from ten to twen- ty per cent, too many are reported, and recorded, as dying of Consumption. It is not to be denied that phthisis is the great life-destroyer of our climate ; but it is believed by many intelligent and professional observers that too much is charged to this malady, while scrofula, marasmus-a general wasting without pulmonary affection-and diseases induced by vicious indulgences do not bear their true proportion." On this subject the City Inspector of the City of New York, in his Report for 1852 justly remarks-<c Consumption, in all bills of mortality that we have access to, stands con- spicuously forth in its array of figures. The mortality from this cause greatly exceeds that of any other ; in this, however, it is only pursuing its usual course. It is not at all pre- sumable, though, that phthisis as understood, is properly chargeable with all included under the term Consumption. It has been found an exceedingly convenient hiding-place for a host of ailings that prefer another guise ; there's a prestige about it, and a protecting character in its influence, that cause it to be constantly sought, to shield others of not such distinctive favor ; hence its ranks are always crowded, and it would not be surprising, upon due investigation, if the discovery were made, that like ' charity,' it covereth a mul- titude of sins."
