November 30th, 1953 Dear Selman, Following is a tentative annual budget and an estimate of space requirements for an ideal fully functioning Division of Immunochemistry which would work primarily on fundamental problems and would also participate actively in the interests of other divisions: Salaries: Division head (Prof. of Immunochemistry) $12,500. Staff associates 7,500 Annual post-doctorate fellow 4,000 Three graduate students 6,000 Laboratory helper for sterile glassware and animal work 2,800 Laboratory helper, cleaning 2,700 One-quarter time, secretarial help 1,000 $36,000 Supplies and apparatus 2,700 Animals 1,000 Travel, contingencies 300 40,000 Space: Unit laboratory and office for division head 5 unit laboratories for staff, fellows, students, or equivalent in larger rooms. 1 store room 1 dark, or shared dark room 1 cold, or shared cold room Dr. Plescia and I have estimated that basic equipment for such a division would cost about $20-25,000. We have an itemized list which could be furnished if and when it would help you. If the Division could start on some such basis it should function as a very useful and productive part of the Institute. If I were to be considered as division chief it might be possible for me to close out my work here by June 30, 1955. Many thanks for the enjoyable afternoon with you and Deborah the other day. Cordially, Michael Heidelberger
