AG Diary 5/9/31 Dr. Franklin C. McLean: Discussion of development of psychiatry in Univ. of Chicago. Much need of development, but very difficult, especially if orientation of the department is broad and tolerant. Bailey, C.J. Herrick and Lashley sharply opposed to recognition of psycho-analysis. Franz Alexander is returning to Germany with no great regret, in view of hostility of men in the Medical Faculty in Chicago. McL. would like to get under way with plans for psychiatry. The type of aid hitherto given by the GSE to Chicago would be very satisfactory to him, since the Sprague Fund would cover the investigative work done providing $70,000 to $80,000 a year were available for salaries and other expenses of creating and maintaining a department. AG tells him he is dubious about clarity of plans and general policy of Medical School and that he thinks it would be wise at this time for him to make no request whatever.
