July 28, 1944 Hi darling, For two days we've been busy again - and have had to go thru the shambles of trying to help a brand new outfit get organized and functioning. But gradually some order has come out of chaos and we've managed to get some patients treated. The news from everywhere is so good tonight. Not only our own progress here, but, the Italian & Russian victories at Lwow & Brest-Litovsk. Adolf must be feeling the hot breath on his neck. Surely it won't be too long. There must be unconditional surrender. The complete removal from wealth & power of the entire Junker German class - the removal to central Germany of all the Germans in East Prussia (if the Russians are foolish enough to leave any of them alive). The greatest problem it seems to me is the control of the education of the German children. There must be control of the German educational system - otherwise they'll breed them up to be Nazi's all over again. We must enter actively into a world court type of arrangements, - a court with armed power, and with no hesitation in using it. Last night was hot here for a while. Our tent didn't get hit, and there were no casualties, so we were lucky. Like a dope, I slept right through it all. The falling flak is really the greatest nuisance. Jerry is over us as I write, but he seems bound somewhere else. Had three interesting operations today. Back injury, and a couple of tough abdomens. One fellow had a bullet enter his back, come out his belly wall and re-enter his thigh and end up in his knee. Answer: he was squatting at the time. Penicillin and blood are saving lots of lives here, plus early surgery in the Field Hospitals. It is a great thrill to be here doing this work, and I am happy as a clam. H
