July 15, 1945
Dear Margaret,
I arrived on schedule time and by daylight last Thursday and found that Ruth had been over but had gone back to Paris to wind up matters there.  I spent the first night in Dr. Bauer's room, who was in Paris for a few days and who is occupying Dr. Leach's room temporarily;--at 56 Curzon ST.  The next day I moved into a tiny room in a rooming house, and to-morrow I move again.  That is how crowded London is.  On Friday Ruth had returned and had lunch with me.  She seems well but a bit thin.  There is no special news except the change of job.  She is still in the army but assigned to the Ambassador somehow.  She has the desk that used to be Peggy's.  She hopes gradually to find out what she is supposed to do.
I handed over Peg's gift to Mrs. Ruth Mary Penfield Lewis, who seemed appreciative.
Yesterday Ruth had lunch with me again and I saw her office.  In the evening I took Ruth and Dr. O'Brien to dinner at Claridge's and we had

a very good meal, well served.  To-day (Sunday) I shall meet Ruth for lunch and we shall spend the afternoon together.
Last night England went off War Time, but has one hour of Daylight Saving Time left.  This may be dropped later in the summer, but it has not been decided yet.
I am now working on a plan to visit the Balkans and other points on the continent before the meetings here and hope to get away at the end of the week.  Dr. Goodman is at his country place for a brief holiday, but expects to be back Monday.  He phoned me inviting me down for the week-end, but I declined so as to have the time with Ruth.  Ruth is temporarily at the Cumberland Hotel.
It is warm here and sticky.  The temperatures are in the eighties and are reminiscent of Washington, but this is considered "fine weather" here where there is so much cloud and rain usually.  We are having thunderstorms frequently.
I hope to get good news soon about Wally and the children.
