December 4, 1982 Dear Dr. Koop: You have encouraged us by your unwavering commitment on ethical issues. Several years ago, we enjoyed presenting the film series, "Whatever Happened to the Human Race?", in the Texas Medical Center. We have since benefited by an increased awareness and understanding of the humanistic forces at work in the medical community. We understand from Mrs. Shari Hromas, who has been corresponding with you from Dr. Benjy Brooks' office, that you will be in Houston for the Pediatric Surgery Conference on February 17-19. Would you have time available to share with us on one of these evenings? We would appreciate hearing you discuss our Christian witness as physicians, or a topic of your choice. You are probably familiar with the national Christian Medical Society, with which we are affiliated. The Texas Medical Center chapter of the Christian Medical Society includes medical professionals from throughout Houston, but is mainly composed of medical students from Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. We meet to encourage one another and learn how to work out our faith in the practice of medicine. We hope you can join us, and are grateful for the encouragement you have already brought to us. Sincerely, Merlin Friesen, President
