Wash. Times; 10-31-86 Kudos for Dr. Koop Your Oct. 27 editorial “Flying the. Koop,” on U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop’s stand in favor of pub- lic education to prevent the spread of AIDS, grossly misrepresented a serious national epidemic. Dr. Koop has recognized the ur- gent need to inform all potential AIDS victims of ways to prevent be- ing infected with the virus that ulti-' mately brings on the disease. Ignorance is akin to death in this epidemic; and as our surgeon gen- eral, Dr. Koop has taken a highly visible and extemely responsible po- sition by urging early exposure to disease prevention information. As to the dig against his pro-lite’ position, his efforts in the area of respect for human life have been undiminished, not unly for the un- born but also for the elderly who are targeted for euthanasia by many who feel older persons should die. and get out of the way. As conservatives, we should all be proud of the contributions to our na- tion made by this able public ser- vant. As potential AIDS victims, as well as being parents and loved ones of potential victims, we should be thankful that our surgeon general has taken a visible stand in favor of ways to prevent the spread of this dread disease to all segments of our population.
