20 July 1981 Dear Yoji: Thanks very much for your invitation to lecture in the course you are organizing for the Japan Medical Research Foundation at Oiso. I am pleased to accept and look forward to revisiting Japan for the first time in 15 years. Unless I hear from you otherwise, I shall plan to present a lecture of about 90 minutes, in which I shall briefly review the major issues in retrovirology and then describe a number of ways in which recombinant DNA techniques have been used to help resolve such issues. I shall wait to hear from you before making travel plans. Will tickets be purchased in Japan or shall I arrange for them here and be recompensed by you? Are there special rates available in Japan? (I ask this because there is a reasonable chance my wife may accompany me, in which case I shall be looking for an inexpensive fare for her; in addition, the dates of our visit to Japan would, of course, be extended beyond the four days of the course.) With best personal regards (and thanks for the photos you sent of the Hawaii meetings, Harold E. Varmus, M.D. Professor
