September 27, 1982 Dear Marshall: I enclose the statement presented to the Pope at the recent meeting of Presidents of the National Scientific Academies (and others) at the Vatican. Carlos Chagas and Viki Weisskopf ask that you sign the statement as a member of the Pontifical Academy, if you are willing, and then that you telex the Academy to inform them that you have done so. The signed documents should be sent to Viki's office, 6-303, MIT, Cambridge 02139. It was a very moving meeting. The statement represents a virtual unamity among the scientists. It was received with gratitude by the Pope, who said that he considers no other issue more important. With best wishes, Sincerely, Howard H. Hiatt
