Dear Joshua:

Thank you for the letter, newsclipping and copy of your testimony
on the Administration's plans to reduce support of training in

the Bio Sciences. I was quite surprised to read Dr. Zapp's
testimony.

The times ahead are going to be turbulent. I see no effective opposition
to what is being done in the (false) name of economy.

As to copy machines which skip the white spaces--until we can
make fast scan systems which are economically competitive with
lenses, it is unlikely we can persuade even enthusiastic ecologists
to pay the extra cost.

We are now marketing a Xerox 7000 which reduces copy. In fact,
this letter was typed on ordinary paper and reduced to this size
on an X7000. (I cheated and cut the extra paper off before
mailing.) Many of our customers copy two pages on one this way.
They also use Microspheres paper, which is half the weight
but the same stiffness as ordinary 20 lb. bond paper. We also
promote 2-sided copying. These are all cost effective--but we
haven't a cost effective way yet to do space skipping on ordinary
copiers.
