Dear Josh:

I'm glad to hear that you have your manuscript off to Brand,
If you have serious reservations about the wisdom of this move I'm sorry
you did it, because I really meant it when I told you that my sending
my manuscript to Brand was not intended to influence your decision,
I have begun to weaken myself about this decision, but was swept away
by Brand's easy and enthusiastic solution. In any case, the papers
should get rapid publication this way.

Your suggestion that the communications be combined in a
single reprint is an excellent one, except that our government funds
have all sorts of strings attached. If you paid for the reprints we
would not be able to send you a check for half the cost and, on the
other hand, we might find it difficult to persuade some accountant in
Washington that it was reasonable for us to purchase reprints of your
paper, however, negligible the cost. Under these circumstances, I don't
think it would be very practicable to try to pro-rate the cost. Since
this will be a short and inexpensive reprint, if your laboratory cculd
support the expense of buying the combined reprints and presenting ue
with 100 of them, I think that would be a very happy solution. I find
myself frequently embarrassed by this situation of having lots of money
in the bank but none to spend.

Werner started here a few weeks ago and seems to be enjoying
work with bacteria. He insists, the, that the shift from Neurospora is
probably only an adaptation rather than a mutation. :
