Many thanks for completing and returning the
capital-punishment questionnaire. The best assurances
of confidentiality I. can provide (which are quite good,
and as good as the facts of life and law permit) are (1)
that in the absence of a subpoena, the individual ques-
tionnaires, the information contained in the responses
to them, and the names of our respondents will be kept
strictly confidential; (2) that the chances of a sub-
poena being issued for the data underlying an academic
study of this sort are probably in the nature of .000000003
of one per cent; and (3) that if a subpoena does issue, the
result -- as you can guess -- will be one hell of a wild
legal catfight, in which I shall ask Bill Keogh to repre-
sent me. (Plus ga change, plus ca reste l& meme chose!)
