UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AGRICULTURAL. RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION BUREAU OF AGRICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY PEORIA 5, ILLINOIS May 13, 1946 Dre Joshua Lederverg Yale University Osvorn Botanical Laboratory New Haven, Connecticut Dear Dr. Lederberg: The non-agglutinating form of Schizosaccharomyces versa- tilis should not clump strongly when grown in broth. Also, if you use a rich malt extract medium you may be able to increase its rate of growth. In response to your letter of April 30, 1946, I am send- ing you cultures of Schizosaccharomyces octospores NRRL Y=-854 end Se. pombe Y-675. TI hope one of these may prove satisfactory. Endomyces albicans is a misnomer. It was reported ascosporo= genous in 1898 but not since, yet it is very commonly known in the nonsporogenous form as Candida albicans. As I doubt that you are interested in nonsporogenous yeasts I am not sending a strain; however, we do have many strains of this yeast and would be glad to send you some if*you still desire them. Sincerely yours, Sapp gp Waban Lynferd Je Wickerham, Zymologist Fermentation Division Northern Regionel Research Laboratory
