February 18, 1958 Dr. B. ae D. Stocker Lister Institute Chelsea Bridge Rd. London S#, Englanc Dear Bruce: I have made at least ons qick look for the X~phage that you asked about in your letter of the 9th. I don't find any very useful samples. Aleck Bernstein was the last fellow to do some work cn this and I ama little surprised that he did not bring some samples back home with hia. If he could give me some clue where he left his best preparations, if he did so, I might still be able to help you out. I will have another look in any cause. As concerns the symposium, I don't want to impose too much on your own judgment. On the whole I think the general bases of biochemical genetics are pretty well understood and should act require very auch re— statement. However, insofar as they influence your own methodology in approaching infectious disease from a genetic standpoint, there is every reason to bring up questions both of biochemical genetics and the basic mechanisas of genetic transfer in bacteria. I don't think I will be making an opening address; in any case you don't want to count on it. It's too bad you won't be getting down to Gatlinburg. That promises to be an extraordinary meeting. Thank you very mich for the pos%exs: which just arrived. With best wishes to you all, Yours sincerely, Joshua Lederberg Professor of Medical Genetics JL/ew
