STRITCH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE of i LOYOLA UNIVERSITY 706 South Wolcott Avenue Chicago 12, Illinois Thursday aug. 21, 1952 Dr. Bruce Stocker Dept. of Microbiology New York University 77 lst Ave., New York, N.Y. ity dear doctor Stocker: I transferred your cultures the afternoon you left me to broth made up of 0.5% tryptose, 0.2% yeast extract at pH 7.1, incubated at room temp. till next morning. To each tube was added 5% formalin, organisms washed by centrifugation and stained, The slides are being shipped in a separate package. All broth cultures appeared smooth except SW 592 which was settled out and is probably a rough variant. My observations are as follows: SW541 - no def. noverent in broth, no stainable flagella SwSLh - ? & Swo55-" * nosy flagella present, normal curvature S656 - " " " " n- Sw 653 - motile, mainly wiggling ’ " 7 tt tf Sw 65 - " " tt tt it SW 592 = normal motion " " " r SW 593 - normal or al.wiggly motion, " i " " The lack of swarming of 592 is perhaps due to its being "rough". None of the strains have "curly" flagella. For comparison I am sending you a slide of Sal wichita showing mainly curly flagella with a few normals. Hope you are well and have a pleasant trip home to England. Copy for Dr. Lederberg.
