Dear Esther and Joshua,

Thank you for your last letter which was re-
ceived months ago, it contained the history of some
of the strains used in the. fertility screening of
coli type strains. The proofs are supposed to arrive tc
here one of these days, but I have forgotten how
many reprints you wanted (we have to order Shen when

we return the 1, proof). -
ve, .oI have made some, investigations ‘into. the a
question how these reprints should be payed and ©
everybody in the administration seem to think that
you will have to pay for them. Therefore, please,
tell me the. exact number of copies that you want,
and you will be billed iater.

Congratulations. to your new home. I hope
you are as fond of yours as we are of ours. We
moved in a fortnight ago. When the moving van ar-
rived there were 4 carpenters, 2 electricians, 1.
plumber and 4 painters. at work on the greund floor,
and the stairs to second floor were in the process
of being plastic treated. But by now everything is i
under céntrol and we. think that it is a very char-
ming home.

A paper on the’ “Salmonella-coli crosses. cis ‘
in press. Hfr 13 (W3287.) acts as a sort of an F prime
culture-in these crosses, the recombinants probably
being diploids and functioning as males when F- con-
version experiments are. carried out with coli F™
strains. The f antigen. follows the F factor. |

- I am leaving to night for a 3-4 weeks visit
in Stockholm partly to follow a course which Bertani
is giving at Karolinska.

In spring Alfan® is coming to, this institute,
he will stay for a year. He is studying the site of
synthesis within the «ell of the RNA of Eastern
Equine Encephalitis virus. We are looking forward
to Seeing | a and a ‘discussing with him,
