Dear Professor Lederberg:

I do not think that I will be able to attend the
informal conference on the existence and detection of
extraterrestrial life. I did not plan to attend the
Moscow meeting of the International Union of Biochemistry,
and it would require a special trip to attend the informal
conference. In addition to the problem of finding travel

money at this time, work would stop in my laboratory while
I was away.

For these reasons, I regret that I shall have to
decline the invitation to attend this conference, unless
you still feel that I should attend.
