Dear Joshua and Esther:  This will acknowledge your pre-Stockholm letter and the lunar reprint and what you proposed to say to the court in Stockholm.  I doubt if I could be as generous to a King as you have been.  When I was a little fellow we had a mess[?] of soldiers whose leader was a king.  In the mock battles I used to knock off the king first -- than [sic] his officers.  These toys come from Germany -- the king being the Kaiser.  The rabble were Russian and Jewish soldiers.
Any problems pertaining to carbohydrate chemistry should not be readily solved with your close proximity to Clint[?] Ballon Ahant[?] 2 years ago Stanford wanted to get Clint[?] but due to the race prejudice against Orientals they decided to stay at Berkeley.
