loeasr UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA 4 November 1957 Air Mail Professor J. Laderberg Genetics Department University of Wisconsin Madison, Wis. Dear Professor Laderberg: The work in Marine Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is being favored by a one-million-dollar grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. Among the items to be supported are four professorships, which after eight years of such support will be taken over by the University. One of the four positions will be in the general area of Plant Physiology, possibly verging on nutrition or even genetics. We particularly need strengthening in the biochemical aspects of the subject. We would expect and hope that the appointee would be interested in marine problems. One of the candidates we have under consideration is Dr. Ralph A. Lewin, who has given your name as reference. We would be very happy indeed to have from you, at your early convenience, a critical appraisal of this man. If you should happen to have others in mind that you might think to be more suitable for such @ position as I have briefly indicated, we would be very happy to have some remarks on them, perhaps in comparison with Lewin. Any remarks that you may give us will be greatly appreci- ated, and will be held in confidence. Very sincerely yours, Cefl L. Hubbs Professor of Biology CLH sdk
