Dear Josh:

There will be an opening here beginning with the academic
year 1960-1961 for an instructor to assist me in our Introductory
Genetics course which is given in the fall term. The duties of
the instructor consist primarily in the direction of the laboratory
part of the course. Normally, there are five laboratory sections
which meet once a week, and there are 15 to 20 students in each
section. Sections are under the supervision of graduate assistants.
The instructor in charge must coordinate the laboratory sections
and supervise the assistants in the preparation of the laboratory
exercises.

The laboratory work this year will consist of experiments
with Drosophila on gene interaction, sex linkage, and gene recom-
bination; recombination in E. coli, including an experiment on the
kinetics of transfer; and recombination in the r-II region of
phage T-4. Laboratory exercises change each year, and, of course,
the instructor in charge has a great deal to do with their planning.

During the spring term the instructor is essentially free
of any formal teaching duties. However, he may gain experience
by participating in one of the graduate courses on microbial
genetics.

My preference for the instructor is a man whose research
interests are in microbial genetics, and, as far as the course is
concerned, experience with both E. coli and phage is essential.

Research facilities here for microbial genetics are quite
good, and a man accepting this position will have ample opportunity
to do his own research. A small research budget is provided by
the Department and every effort will be made to assist him in
getting outside funds.

Instructors are appointed on a yearly basis for a maximum
of three years. Salary of an instructor is at present $6000 per
year on a 9 months basis but paid over a 12 mor.th period.
